However, SEL in ESOL classrooms remains underexplored. This article reports on a qualitative study which investigated ESOL learners’ perceptions of the effectiveness of SEL strategies in terms of their emotions and well-being. The study generated data using daily classroom observations, recorded classroom discussions, surveys, and artefacts. The analysis suggests students experienced positive emotions, such as happiness and feeling good and safe in the classroom as well as increased emotional awareness. The students highlighted the following strategies as being especially effective: restorative circles, letters to self, writing poetry, and classroom decorations. The findings demonstrate the need to embrace SEL practices as essential elements in ELT as they play a vital role in fostering students’ and teachers’ well-being, both within and beyond the classroom.","PeriodicalId":47776,"journal":{"name":"Elt Journal","volume":"28 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135429897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both ELT teachers and researchers have recently been urged to prioritize wellbeing in their teaching and research. However, far too little attention has been paid to wellbeing among ELT learners, especially from their own perspective. Accordingly, this study aimed at developing an understanding of ELT learners’ perceptions of their stressors in class and recommendations to improve their wellbeing. Out of eighty survey participants, we selected nine participants with the highest and nine participants with the lowest scores on a wellbeing measure. Then, we conducted oral survey interviews with each of these participants, and the data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The findings indicated four main stressors for ELT learners: lack of preparation, assessment, speaking English, and lack of understanding. Participants also made several recommendations to teachers, the university, and for themselves which they believe would help enhance their wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":47776,"journal":{"name":"Elt Journal","volume":"50 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135775227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study involved a group of Year 8 students from an Indonesian public school who were taught English using R2L strategies that had been specifically developed for EFL classrooms, where both L1 and L2 are used as the instructional language. Classroom observations, student writing, and interviews were collected as the data. The texts produced by the students before and after the programme were examined qualitatively using a functional linguistic model. The study found that fine-tuning R2L by systematizing the use of L1 and L2 in the classroom interactions can assist in improving student writing. Students wrote longer texts, used high-level vocabulary, and had a better mastery of English grammar as shown by their use of more complex grammatical structures. Other pedagogic gains from the programme are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":47776,"journal":{"name":"Elt Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46399878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I have adopted an imitative learning approach, engaging my students in a transformative imitation of model texts both offline in the classroom and online using various internet tools. Imitative learning means students learn to write by modelling texts written by expert writers or more capable peers and by consciously understanding the communicative goal and strategies employed in the model text. This imitative learning approach, which enables scaffolding, is effective in providing students with model texts to learn from, and can be followed by guided and independent construction of their own texts.","PeriodicalId":47776,"journal":{"name":"Elt Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135835811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study explored how critical inquiries into the current ASR technology that is oriented towards native speech might elicit Global Englishes (GE) awareness among Korean pre-service teachers. Qualitative data gathered from interviews with twenty-three Korean students in a teacher education programme and their reflective journals revealed their GE awareness regarding ASR issues in ELT. Furthermore, the findings suggested that their GE awareness was influenced by their previous experiences with taking GE-informed courses and English as a lingua franca communication. Finally, these participants would be willing to incorporate GE perspectives into their future ASR-based ELT classes. It is suggested that the inclusion of GE perspectives into ELT courses be considered to encourage L2 students not to entirely conform to NS norms in ELT.","PeriodicalId":47776,"journal":{"name":"Elt Journal","volume":"559 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134919934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Novice middle-school teachers from Chile (n = 14) were guided within semi-structured interviews to reflect on their own L2 listening teaching practices in public and semi-private school classrooms. Verbal reports were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis techniques and underwent systematic interrogation of qualitative data. The results show an overemphasis on teacher preference for task completion to the detriment of developing listening strategies. We present results and provide guidelines for teachers to integrate features of a metacognitive instruction approach to listening.","PeriodicalId":47776,"journal":{"name":"Elt Journal","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":2.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47889134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
