This study also examined the effectiveness of informational programs on HIV/AIDS and STI in empowering FSWs to negotiate condom use during sex. A mixed method research design was employed in this study, which included face-to-face surveys with 116 female sex workers (FSWs) and four focus group discussions (FGDs) with 23 street based FSWs. The study finds that Bangladeshi female sex workers use “tactics” in meeting their information needs. They reported rarely using formal information sources such as government agencies and indicated sometimes being harassed by law enforcement agencies because of their professional status, creating a distance between formal information agencies and their everyday life information seeking. Furthermore, FSWs reported having significant unmet information needs. The findings regarding the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS and STI informational programs indicated that simply providing ‘information’ may not be sufficient to empower FSWs to negotiate safer sexual practices with their clients.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"52 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139151096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We carried out a quasi-experiment in one public university’s faculty of communication and media studies. We randomly divided participants into three groups, including the control group ( N = 235), audio-visual media-based group ( N = 118) and non-audio-visual media-based group (N = 117). The experimental groups were exposed to 8 weeks of training to improve their social media literacy skills to fight fake news. The study showed that participants exposed to social media literacy skills through audio-visual-based intervention reported better social media knowledge, demonstrated a better ability to spot fake news, and the inclination to share accurate news from the list of fake news, compared to the non-audio-visual based intervention group and the control group. Overall, social media literacy skills were found to be impactful in fighting fake news. We recommend relevant authorities and organisations to intensify their efforts to improve the public's social media literacy to help halt the spread of misleading information. Audio-visual-based intervention should be employed to educate social media literacy, to boost the effectiveness of programmes to combat fake news.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"1 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138950688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study investigated research data sharing at the selected universities in Tanzania. Specifically, the study sought to explore the research data sharing practices as well as determine the researchers’ perceptions of research data sharing. This study used a cross-section survey design, where both qualitative and quantitative research approaches were used. A sample size of 200 was drawn from a population of 1846 of the universities under study. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from researchers while interviews were used to collect data from the university leaders. The findings indicate that researchers were practicing research data sharing in the surveyed institutions at different levels. The study has also revealed that researchers were mostly practicing sharing of research data within their research groups. Further, it was found that most of the respondents were willing to use others’ research data compared to their data sets being used by others. Moreover, the academic backgrounds of the researchers were significantly important in research data-sharing practices. The study also found that researchers perceived that sharing of research data could easily be done if researchers would benefit from sharing the research data or if researchers would be forced to share their research data. The study concludes that, researchers at the surveyed institutions have been practicing research data sharing although at the minimum level. The study recommends the establishment of research data-sharing national framework that can guide all entities and activities related to research data sharing.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138948798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, active utilization of agriculture information can be instrumental for the agriculture development and the quality of life of farmers. Despite Pakistan's agriculture-based economy, literature reports that Pakistani farmers do not utilize the information effectively. Therefore, a study was conducted to explore the determinants of agriculture information utilization among farmers. Data was collected quantitatively through a survey design, and the population included all farmers of District Okara Punjab, Pakistan. The sample was recruited based on convenient sampling technique. Since the questionnaire was developed, therefore its content validity was confirmed through expert scrutiny and the internal consistency and reliability of measures were determined through Cronbach's alpha. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS-22 and path analysis was calculated through the Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS). Data analysis confirmed that Pakistani farmers were paying average level of active attention towards seeking agricultural information. Whereas path analysis established that the realization of agricultural information needs leads to utilization of agriculture information, and information seeking behavior plays a significant mediating role in this regard.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"12 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138951807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines the formation of addiction, with a particular focus on university students, to gain a great understanding of how social media addiction works. Based on a socio-technical systems framework, this study develops a model to explore how social and technical factors influence social media addiction. A survey involving 265 participants was conducted to examine our research model. Findings indicate that perceived irreplaceability has a good explanation and predictive power for social media addiction. However, the relationship between functional dependence and social relationship is not significant. Additionally, social factors (i.e., fear of missing out and sense of belonging) influence perceived irreplaceability, whereas technical factors (i.e., utilitarian, social, and hedonic values) affect functional dependence. Theoretical and practical implications of preventing social media addiction are also discussed in this study.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"13 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138977204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected from the participants using a convenience sampling technique. A total of 244 campus journalists participated in this survey. The study found that campus journalists primarily sought information to write news, covering university prosperity, hall or residence-related issues, the university's political issues, and cultural activities. They used a variety of media tools to enhance their reporting and cross-checked facts to ensure the authenticity of the news they received. The results also showed that the campus journalists mainly collected news by visiting the place physically and listening to witnesses’ stories. Lack of training, lack of authority's cooperation, and insufficient time were found as significant barriers to seeking information. Furthermore, the study found significant differences in the motivations for seeking information among journalists from different age groups and levels of experience.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"52 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139008236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The maturity of information technologies used by the public sector allows new opportunities and perils for citizens worldwide. It also leads to more efficient use of government resources applied to the knowledge and profile of potential users. Despite the importance of e-government, the diffusion of this technology is an exception for many governments. There are very few studies on this topic to understand how user profiles support public policies for technology. This research aims to contribute to the profile of e-government using the diffusion of innovation theory as a framework. We collect information from Mexico's and Spain's users from governmental databases and analyze them through logistic regression, which helps define e-government users’ profiles in these two countries.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"40 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138597502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ease of communication through SNS has led to an increase in their popularity and number of users. As a network continues to grow, users are overwhelmed by the need to pay more attention to the overwhelming volume of social demands to stay connected with friends and family. As a result, many choose to withdraw from social media temporarily or permanently. Based on stress coping theory, this paper proposes a research model to test the relationships between information overload, social overload, and communication overload with disturbance handling, self-preservation, exhaustion, and fatigue, on SNS discontinuation intention. The proposed model was tested in a field study in Malaysia, and data were collected from 159 respondents for all SNS users. The results of this study indicate that social overload has the strongest effect on coping strategy, while the theory of exhaustion and fatigue has a strong effect on discontinuation intention. This study advances the theoretical understanding of SNS discontinuation intention based on coping strategy and strain theory. It also provides suggestions for coping with overload.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"38 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139243956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Archives are important resources for local governments as vehicles of communication and interaction. When archives are poorly managed, local governments such as counties and cities will find it difficult to account for past operations, raising the challenge of effective record-keeping. Thus, through the use of a case study research design, this paper reports findings of a study that examined the practices involved in managing archives in Mpigi District Local Government (MDLG) in Uganda. Its population was comprised of MDLG staff, of whom 17 were purposively sampled. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews, observation and document analysis. Data was analysed using interpretative methods and aimed at understanding the respondents’ subjective experiences and their interpretation of the archives management practices around them. The study found that MDLG created and kept archives in both paper and digital formats but lacked an archives management policy; was hampered by an inadequate budgetary allocation to support archival activities; and suffered from a shortage of archivists to guide archives management practices. The study recommended the development of an archives policy to enable the district to manage the archives according to archives management practices; the recruitment of professional archivist personnel to improve the practices; the training of all district staff in handling archives as end users; and that the district to digitise the archives. This study builds on the knowledge of archives management practices in general, and in particular in MDLG.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"285 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139244049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To conceptualize our research model, we employed the Compensatory Internet Use Theory (CIUT), which is associated with problematic technology usage. The proposed model investigates the influence of the following negative factors that emerged because of COVID-19 as the determinants of problematic smartphone use (PSU): remote work arrangement (RWA), intolerance of uncertainty (IU), COVID-19 anxiety (CA), and social isolation (ISO). In addition, we suggest that, although employees tend to use smartphones excessively to alleviate stressful life conditions, these conditions (RWA, IU, CA, and ISO) will lead to emotional exhaustion (EE), which will consequently result in the excessive use of smartphones. Furthermore, we are investigating the influence of PSU on employee work productivity. Finally, we are also interested in exploring the moderating role of gender in the relationships within our model. The results have shown that all hypotheses are supported, except for the influence of RWA on EE and PSU, and the influence of CA on PSU. We believe that our findings will provide researchers and businesses with a deeper understanding of this critical issue, especially in the context of smartphone usage at work.","PeriodicalId":47137,"journal":{"name":"Information Development","volume":"269 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139250698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
