By March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. Stay-at-home orders and increases in U.S. infection rates had a profound impact on doctoral-level health service psychology (HSP) training beginning in the earliest stages of the pandemic. The present study examined the impact of COVID-19 on HSP students early in the pandemic using data from an online survey that was distributed to students from 179 doctoral programs affiliated with the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology and distributed by the Council for Chairs of Training Councils to doctoral-level HSP PsyD and PhD programs between May 1st and June 25th, 2020. This study identifies areas of education and training negatively impacted by the pandemic in its first few months, including training and instrumental support, specific training and support in telehealth, safety protections and considerations, and emotional support. Implications of, and recommendations for, addressing the concerns raised by students in these areas are discussed. By implementing these recommendations, training programs can help facilitate HSP students' ability to meet continued training and professional development goals in the later stages of the pandemic. Enhancing mentorship discussions to focus on early career job identification may promote placement satisfaction and match alongside growth and success of the geriatric mental health workforce. This cross-sectional observational study analyzed data from 97 respondents, including geropsychology trainees (n = 42) and professional geropsychologists (n = 55), who completed an online survey. Trainees endorsed a variety of ideal job characteristics in geropsychology; particularly settings with interdisciplinary teams and in medical, palliative/hospice, long-term, and geriatric outpatient care. Location was one of the most important factors in selecting a job for both trainees and professionals; the latter also reported the importance of setting-specific fit. Most trainees described mentoring as the main supportive factor in their job search and placement, specifically with regards to skill development, decision-making assistance, and personal support. Respondents listed the resources they utilized to identify open geropsychology positions, but also responded that more specific resources to aid job selection would be useful. Mentorship in the selection of job opportunities offers instrumental and emotional support in defining job characteristics consistent with one's career goals. In terms of early career job identification and selection, training programs are encouraged to consider our results when providing career mentoring. In what was previously a field comprised predominantly of White men, HSP trainees today represent a much broader range of backgrounds. Nonetheless, the leadership within HSP training (e.g., faculty) remains relatively homogenous, and the training approaches (e.g., mentorship styles, expectations for students) may have failed to evolve to meet the needs of this more diverse pool of trainees. Therefore, there is reason to believe that the training needs of students who represent an array of diverse backgrounds, identities, and life experiences may not be met by existing conceptualizations of and approaches to training. In this article, we discuss several training issues that are specific to a range of trainees, including women, trainees who are parents, sexual/gender minoritized trainees, trainees with disabilities, and trainees from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
