This study, conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, focuses on assessing the level of collaboration from the perspective of parents of students with intellectual disabilities. Using descriptive analysis, data was gathered from 191 parents, and the results indicate a perceived low level of collaboration between schools and various agencies in planning and supporting the transition to post-secondary environments. The study results evaluate collaboration in three dimensions: (a) universities rank lowest with <math><mrow><mover><mi>x</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></math> <i>=</i>1.61 and <i>SD=1.102</i>). (b) vocational training centers ranking highest (1<sup>st</sup> rank) with an <math><mrow><mover><mi>x</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></math> <i>=</i> 1.97 and SD <i>= 1.079</i>), and (c) other relevant service centers 2<sup>nd</sup> rank with <math><mrow><mover><mi>x</mi><mo>¯</mo></mover></mrow></math> <i>=</i>1.69 and <i>SD= 1.177</i>. The findings emphasize the necessity for legislative measures directing agencies to engage in collaborative agreements with secondary schools. This proactive approach aims to enhance opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities during their transition to post-secondary education and training. The study concludes with implications for future research and recommendations for fostering improved collaboration and support mechanisms.</p>","PeriodicalId":46904,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Intellectual Disabilities","volume":" ","pages":"17446295241262565"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141332192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, social studies has historically been an under-researched academic content area for students with intellectual disabilities. The aim of this study was to identify and summarize empirical research on social studies instruction for students with intellectual disabilities. We searched for articles in two electronic databases from 2000 to 2023. We applied seven inclusion criteria to 1709 articles that emerged in databases. A total of 13 empirical studies met the inclusion criteria. We conducted a narrative review across these 13 studies. Results showed that students with intellectual disabilities improved social studies skills through effective instructional strategies including graphic organizers, technology-based instruction, time delay, and task analysis. Also, social studies instruction for students with intellectual disabilities mostly focused on history and geography. They generally face stigmatisation and negative attitudes from healthcare professionals. The aim of this study is to investigate the link of diagnostic label and social distance on inclusive health representations and practices towards people with intellectual disabilities among healthcare professionals. We conducted an online survey of 163 healthcare professionals living in French-speaking Belgium. The results highlighted that the diagnostic label and a lower social distance predict better representations and practices in inclusive health. In addition, an analysis of mediation showed the mediating effect of social distance on the link between being in contact with people with intellectual disabilities (through employment) and better representations and practices in inclusive health. Drawing on Interpersonal Process Recall, a video-assisted method, together with a focus group interview, the study explores the experiences from in-situ encounters of five social educators employed in a Norwegian municipality. The key findings are that they view relationship-building as integral to their work, they grant primacy to the ideal of autonomy and they strive towards realizing this in their daily work. The study however displays how these emphases might lead to dilemmas, especially between the wish to support the service users' self-determination and the urge to protect them from harm. Nine participants divided into two small groups and their families were included. A quasi-experimental design was employed to determine whether there was a program effect. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, the KIDSCREEN-27, and the Family Quality of Life Scale were administered before and after the intervention. There was a significant increase in social, home, and school skills as well as a better perception of quality of life in relationships with parents, social support, and school.
