Although there is an emerging market for male consumers, these apps are marketed as technological innovations designed to analyse, rate and evaluate mainly women’s facial appearances through the submission of a selfie. Based on the results generated from the selfie, personalised solutions are offered in the form of recommended products to supposedly help women improve their appearances. Drawing on a critical feminist approach and using multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA), the aim of this article is to study how these evaluations are semiotically reproduced and presented to the users. The paper examines in detail how apps convey the evaluation process and transform a selfie into measures, presented through diagrams and charts, that is, how the female face is fragmented and metricised. Coming with affordances of being systematic, exact and scientific, these infographics assign the facial evaluations with meaning. A key argument is that these cosmetic apps are changing the way women are implied to consider and control their (facial) appearance. Following neoliberal notions, the apps put strong pressure on women to take the responsibility to engage in intensive forms of aesthetic labour and to consume the ‘right’ products to appear as the best versions of themselves.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"278 - 297"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47316802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, by employing corpus analysis, this paper proposes Socio-emotional Theory, and contrasts the emotions in the news discourse on Hong Kong National Security Law between China’s and American newspapers. The results show that as for the themes of emotional discourse, China’s newspapers emphasize national security, social stability, anti-interference in China’s internal affairs, the positive roles of the law, the destructive nature of Hong Kong separatists, and their unreasonable resistance to the law; while American newspapers highlight their worry and fear about the law. Secondly, in terms of the distribution of emotional semantic categories, China’s newspapers talk more about confidence and happiness; however, American newspapers display more fear, sadness, worry, anger, and disappointment. As for ideologies, China’s newspapers show support for the law with less worry, while American newspapers display their opposition to the law with worry and anger, and these differences in ideologies actually reflect the conflict between China’s Democratic Centralism and western Populism. This study can provide enlightenment for the construction of a harmonious international discourse system, expand the ontological components and interpretation boundaries of discourse analysis theories, and promote the researches on emotions of news discourse.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"441 - 461"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42982921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using methods of Corpus Linguistics (CL) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study found three prominent themes, namely intake, integration, and concern, through which Syrian refugees are depicted across the political spectrum. The results indicate that adopting a more inclusive immigration policy did not totally negate the biased and discriminatory representations entrenched in the media coverage of refugees, but it can set the stage for more empowering and sympathetic treatment of refugees in the media. This analysis speaks to the importance of media discourse in producing and maintaining particular depictions of refugees among the Canadian public, highlighting the role of ideological and political stances in the portrayals of refugees across news outlets.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"415 - 440"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44525603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the same way, the lack of response can make a person seem unfunny. In this article I argue that failed jokes make a female skiing pundit on TV seem humourless and that this is due to the other interlocutors refraining from giving adequate responses. The material is from a sports programme about cross-country skiing on Swedish Television. The aim of the case study is to find out how power is exercised discursively in humour that fails and to discuss possible implications the rejections may have on notions of gender. The theoretical framework used is a feminist post-structuralist discourse analysis in combination with an analysis of internal and external control mechanisms. The discursive practice of repeated rejections of the female pundit may have consequences for her possibilities in seeming humorous.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"336 - 353"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47415962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on data from 157 Tinder conversations, the analysis explores the occasioning of talk about personal and intimate matters. The analysis shows that the interactional device through which the revelation of personal and intimate information is prompted is the ‘elicited self-disclosure sequence’. In cases in which a direct question fails to prompt a disclosure from the recipient, the ‘volunteered self-disclosure sequence’ emerges as an alternative to promote the revelation of further intimate information. We conclude by observing that relationships are ongoing routine accomplishments arising in mundane sociorelational contexts. The data are in Spanish and Catalan with English translations.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"462 - 493"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43782560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article examines conversations on Twitter, one of the most widely used OSNs, about Europe’s refugee crisis in 2014 and 2015. We use, in particular, topic modeling techniques to deduce the existence of a complex network of Twitter topics formed in response to coverage of and opinion formation surrounding the European refugee crisis. We collected more than 11 million tweets in six different languages. One of our most significant findings is that while most conversations happen in English, the refugee crisis has had different rhythms in other languages. Our assumption is that this could be evidence that the power of mainstream local media on Twitter to set the agenda is considerable, at least regarding refugee-related conversations in Europe.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"354 - 380"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46271341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, I think the book is quite critical in multiple respects. While they do not draw on neurodiversity scholars’ work, they are explicating the details of some of neurodiversity studies’ core ideas. They redirect the analytic gaze from the minds, brains, and genes of the individual to the mutual accomplishment of sense (or non-sense) between parties. They provide a method by which critical scholars can seek out the phenomena they discuss and understand it in its natural, in-the-moment unfolding. And probably most critical is their saying that, while an individual’s uncommon sense might be confusing or disturbing to neurotypicals, it is also an invitation to enter the autistic person’s world where the confusion and disturbed feelings can be resolved. This is linked to the recommendation that what is therapeutic for autistic children is not being trained to participate in a neurotypical world, but it is for neurotypical people to re-/produce the world as a ‘prosthetic environment’ (pp. 203–204) that can support the independent, active participation of autistic people in society.","PeriodicalId":46726,"journal":{"name":"Discourse & Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"246 - 249"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43144221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
