The position of a language group in the world translation system determines the general flow of literary translation, but the specifics for the translation of an individual LLD may depend on a number of factors. In this paper, we explore the situation in the Slovene literary market as far as translators for LLD are concerned, in particular the ways LLD knowledge and literary translation training is acquired, and present possible solutions for the potential lack of translators for specific source languages. To answer the research questions, we surveyed and interviewed translators and editors, as well as looked into the existing opportunities for literary translator training in Slovenia, with a special interest in LLDs, collecting data through web pages of training and education institutions. One such strategy is indirect translation (including also relay interpreting). Since there are conflicting opinions about this practice within the translation community, it is unclear to what extent indirect translation is present in translator training. In order to shed some light on this issue, this article reports on an exploratory study that looked at mentions of indirect translation in the European Masters in Translation (EMT) competences, at references to indirect translation in the syllabi of EMT programmes, at tasks to develop specific skills of indirect translation in mainstream training textbooks and at the responses to a survey addressed to translator trainers. The students followed the same MA programme in Translation Studies at a Swedish university but worked with different source languages (SL): Japanese and English. The focus group data were analysed thematically following Braun and Clarke, with a point of departure in Weidman et al.’s socialisation model and its three core elements: knowledge acquisition, investment, and involvement. The findings show that the two groups’ SLs played a crucial role in their socialisation into the profession, affecting all three core elements to various degrees. The findings can be described as either pertaining to personal reasons or institutional constraints. Recognising Japanese as a language of low diffusion and low resources in the Swedish translation context provides an explanation for these findings. L2 translation is in fact unavoidable in the case of so-called languages of low diffusion, the command of which happens to be rather limited among native speakers of major languages. However, although the academic dispute about the validity of L2 translation seems decidedly milder now, there is still a lacuna within L2 translator training that needs to be addressed. This paper indicates that what usually betrays an L2 translation is its phraseological profile, often recognised as unnatural by native speakers of the target language. The sample includes 40 translations of a promotional text from Czech into English and French produced by novices and professional translators. The general stylistic competence is slightly higher in the group of professionals, although the overall quality score is almost the same. Translations into English are characterised by higher overall quality. The correlation coefficients expressing the dependence between stylistic descriptors and quality indicators show differences both across and within the four groups. Translators into French seem to have less controlled behaviour in the sense that stylistic parameters with quality-enhancing potential can both improve and worsen the translation quality. Conducted to assess the validity of the creation of social subtitling networks, its ultimate goal is to better understand the role that social subtitling, as a non-professional translation activity, can play in increasing access to audiovisual materials in academic environments. Following a task-based approach, 55 students from a translation module taught in the third year of the Degree in English Studies at the UNED worked online for two months and subtitled 82 videos. The videos had been selected from the audiovisual repository of the institution. The impact of this practice on the students’ general translation and foreign language competences as well as the participants’ degree of motivation for future related practices were quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. Following a competence- and task-based approach, these activities have been implemented by the author when teaching English into Spanish dubbing at master’s level and explore the advantages of using translation technology (e.g. translation memory and corpus management tools) in the AVT classroom. Respeakers use speech-recognition software to repeat or paraphrase what is heard through a microphone in a robotic voice while enunciating punctuation and adding colours or labels to identify the speakers. Until now, most respeaking has been done within the same language (intralingual respeaking). As a recent development, interlingual respeaking has the potential to provide a new access service for a wider audience, including those with hearing loss, language learners, foreigners, migrants, refugees, etc. To ensure quality, respeakers must receive systematic and appropriately designed training. As part of the EU-funded project Interlingual Live Subtitling for Access (ILSA), whose goal is to develop a training course for interlingual live subtitlers, this paper presents the results of the largest experiment on interlingual respeaking conducted so far. The aim was to identify the skills required for interlingual respeaking and determine the best-suited professional profile for an interlingual live subtitler to inform training.
