Drawing on analytical psychology, trauma theory and aesthetic philosophy, text explores how certain forms of suffering resist chronological resolution and persist as atmospheres, images or symbolic gestures. The first section examines the temporality of suspended desire and unfulfilled experience—forms of suffering structured not by what happened, but by what never did. The second section explores the aftermath of collapse, when temporality no longer points to the future, but to survival and remainder. Through clinical vignettes, literary references and mythological resonances, the essay argues that analytical listening must not aim to cure time, but to sustain it, especially when psychic life unfolds in waiting, latency or survival. Rather than guiding the patient toward resolution, the analyst may become an Orphic companion: one who listens at the threshold, who stays beside what falls to unfold, and who recognizes the aesthetic, ethical, and political force of suspended time.
","PeriodicalId":45420,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL PSYCHOLOGY","volume":"71 1","pages":"123-143"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2026-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/1468-5922.70037","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147668619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Anima-Images","authors":"Wes Wallace","doi":"10.1111/1468-5922.70027","DOIUrl":"10.1111/1468-5922.70027","url":null,"abstract":"
In 1946, Carl Jung published an “erotic phenomenology” which condensed his teachings about sexuality and romantic love into a concise system. In Part I of this paper, I proposed a new translation of Jung’s original text, together with a discussion of its philosophical premises and the prior history of the system in Jung’s writings. Here I investigate its four “anima-images”—Eve, Helen, Mary and Sophia. Each image represents a stage in the spiritualization of Eros and in the corresponding phenomenology of anima. I trace the prior history of each image in Jung’s writings, and identify its cultural and literary sources, thereby opening the system to critical reflection. I find that the images are drawn from Goethe’s Faust dramas, from ancient Gnostic writings, and from Biblical scripture. Gnostic sources are paramount however, since Sophia is the dominant image and the others are interpreted from a modern Gnostic perspective. This model can provide a framework for cultivating Eros in a therapeutic context. However, the framework is somewhat unstable and it is perhaps better understood as a hybrid of two systems: Eve and Mary on the one hand, and Helen and Sophia on the other.

Drawing on the concept of psychic transparency (Bydlowski, 1997), it explores the heightened permeability of ego boundaries in the perinatal period and argues that the placenta operates not only as a biological organ but as a transitional object imbued with archetypal significance. Through Jungian, post-Jungian, and phenomenological perspectives, the placenta is revealed as both a mediator of life and an image of shadow—simultaneously nurturing and obstructive, connective and severing.

Special attention is given to the moment of placental delivery, reinterpreted as an archetypal act of separation analogous to the alchemical nigredo phase, and to placenta praevia, framed as a symbolic expression of resistance to individuation and severance. Case material and cultural rituals are used to show how the unconscious may register unintegrated placental experiences as psychic residue, dream material, or somatic symptoms. Therapeutic encounters during pregnancy and postpartum are also examined, with particular emphasis on countertransference and the symbolic resonance of the clinical space as a maternal container.

The article proposes a renewed Jungian ethics of birth—one that restores symbolic and psychological meaning to the somatic processes of gestation and parturition. In doing so, it argues for the need to reimagine not only childbirth but also the delivery of the placenta as a vital moment in the psychic life of the mother, the infant, and the therapeutic relationship.
