By 2016, there were 1.1 billion obese people, and by 2025 a quarter of the world’s population will be overweight. It is mainly adults who are suffering from it, but we observe an increasing number of children and adolescents are affected as well. One of the main root causes of overweight and obesity is a sedentary lifestyle, excessive food consumption and the highly processed carbohydrates intake. Obesity may modulate the host’s immunity and lead to negative systemic changes in the body, including the oral cavity. Excess weight is considered to be a major risk factor with the patients suffering from ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, as well as periodontitis. The relation between obesity and periodontal changes is already noticeable in children. The presented case shows the influence of systemic factors such as obesity, vitamin D deficiency on the course of periodontal disease. It depicts the importance of introducing periodontal prevention with obese children. It includes the control of risk factors and the teaching of proper hygiene habits. Therefore, taking preventive and curative measures at the early stage can prevent extreme, irreversible changes in periodontal tissues.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121734101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Post-traumatic injuries are significant problems of paedodontic dentistry that parents with children urgently report to dental practice. Aim. The aim of the study is to indicate the necessity of maintaining the victimological awareness of the dental team in assessing injuries of deciduous and permanent teeth in terms of differentiating accidental and non-accidental injuries. Material and methods. The publications in the PubMed scientific database were reviewed by applying the search criteria for the following keywords in Polish and English: “non-accidental injury”, “children and youth”, “perpetrator of abuse”, “phenomenon identification”, “interview and clinical examination”. Results. Interview and clinical examination are among the basic diagnostic tools for correct diagnosis, which results in the implementation of proper therapeutic management in a child after an injury. This also an opportunity to observe disturbing behavior of children that may indicate abuse. Regardless of the provided information, the subject examination is verifying the compliance of an interview with post-traumatic injuries arising in a simple physical mechanism – the greater the energy, the greater destruction. This will provide relevant information that verifies the compliance of the interview with the clinical examination, thanks to the reliable victimological knowledge of the dentist, results in the correct diagnosis, implementation of appropriate treatment, and child abuse intervention. Conclusions. The likelihood of a child’s non-accidental injury requires medical professionals to take decisive action to protect the child from the effects of physical violence in particular during the COVID-19 pandemic, in which minors forced by the external situation spend more time with perpetrators of abuse, they are more exposed to harm. Victimology education and an appropriate response to child abuse will allow for effective intervention regarding both the therapeutic process and measures to prevent further harm to children.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"18 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127050063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this article is to describe ASDs symptoms, dental problems and treating patients with ASDs in a dental practice. In 1943 Leo Kanner described autism. Etiology of these disorders is still unknown Knowledge regarding the oral health status of autistic children is essential for the paediatric dentists. Among dental conditions commonly seen in patients with ASDs can be found: caries, attrition, bruxism, erosion, gingivitis, periodontitis, trauma, drooling. Management of oral cavity health among autistic children is a challenge for every dental team complicated because of the presence of behavioural unpredictability. It is important to know symptoms of, methods of communication with patients and oral clinical manifestations. The role of continuous and evidenc – based medicine education of dental team and parents is crucial in overcoming challenges by autistic children in dental ofiice.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132373990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 4-year-old girl was reported to a private dental practice for oral sanation. The child required extensive treatment. However, active fistulas in teeth 74, 75, 84, and 85 were the main reason for the appointment. Teeth 74, 75, 84 and 85 were extracted. The parents were informed about orthodontic consequences and recommended regular follow-up visits. The child remained under constant dental and orthodontic monitoring. Two years after extraction of primary mandibular molars, eruptive cysts developed in the region of teeth 84, 85, 74 and 75, followed by eruption of teeth 34 and 44, which showed complete hypoplasia and significant mobility. Demirjian system was used for dental age estimation (evaluation of the level of dental mineralisation based on radiographic images), indicating stage E for first mandibular molars. After orthodontic consultation, a decision was made to extract these teeth.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117018204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper discusses local anesthetic agents such as lignocaine, benzocaine, articaine or mepivacaine, many times used in daily practice by dentists. Various anesthetic techniques, including computer-controlled systems for administering anesthesia, are described in the publication. The topic of teething preparations containing anesthetics and the risks associated with their use were also discussed, so that dentists could warn against their use of carers and parents of children and thus reduce the number of complications after their use. Contraindications to the use of analgesia have been presented and the complications that may occur after their administration have been characterized, thanks to which the right choice of the appropriate agent for analgesia will reduce the risk of possible complications after local anesthesia. The authors hope that after reading the article, doctors will be confident in using the benefits of local anesthetics.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115098862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The few described cases of this pathology are summarized in this article. The literature review was conducted using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, using two sets of keywords each time. Further analysis of the collected articles allowed inclusion of case reports from the last two decades in the review. 18 cases of the occurrence of the medial tooth of the mandible were compared. The possible aetiology of this developmental anomaly could not be determined. The most likely pathogenesis is the hyperactivity of the dental lamina. Among the diagnostic methods, the sumative and three-dimensional imaging methods play an important role. Depending on the case, two various treatment methods are undertaken: surgical, meaning removal of the supernumerary tooth or conservative, consisting in correction of its shape. The prognosis using both methods is good. Mandibular mesiodens is extremely rare, with similar frequency in both genders, and its occurrence often coexists with the agenesis of other mandibular teeth. Both extraction and conservative treatment have a good therapeutic effect.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126514493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HPV infection is currently considered to be one of the main causes of the growing incidence of squamous cell carcinoma in the oropharynx and oral cavity, in particular among populations of developed countries. HPV-positive cancers are characterized by a different from non-viral clinical image, epidemiology, risk factors and treatment protocols. Therefore, it deserves special attention and separate treatment. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the incidence of HPV-positive carcinomas in the world, especially in the group of patients under 50 years of age. All of these factors lead to the conclusion, that redefinition of risk groups for cancer of this area and updating of protocols and prophylaxis is needed. Younger patients should be provided with oral cancer prevention programs, it is also advisable to promote vaccinations. The article describes current epidemiological status and the state of knowledge about HPV positive cancers of mouth and throat region.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127620274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its success depends on the operator’s knowledge, skills and experience. Proper choice of tools is also important. Incorrect tooth extraction using excessive force may cause local complications, such as damage to the soft tissue or to the extracted or neighbouring tooth with potential translocation, bone fracture, formation of an oral sinus communication or even mandibular dislocation. Currently, efforts are being made to develop methods that will allow for the preservation of intact surrounding periodontal tissues to facilitate subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation. Surgical tools used in atraumatic tooth extraction include, among other things, Physics Forceps, periotomes, luxators, and the Benex extractor system. These tools reduce the risk of damage to the vestibular lamina of the alveolar bone, allow for avoiding the need for a mucoperiosteal flap and reduce the incidence of postoperative pain. This helps create optimal conditions for subsequent implant prosthetic reconstruction. The paper presents the characteristics and application of selected tools used in atraumatic tooth extraction.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"129 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130086658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Improper eating habits among children and adolescents often lead to overweight and obesity. Research indicates that these are risk factors for many diseases, including diseases in the oral cavity. Aim. To analyse the correlations of selected parameters of dental and periodontal health as well as oral hygiene status in overweight and obese children and adolescents versus control group. Material and methods. The study included 120 patients aged 11-18 years, who were classified into a study group with 60 overweight/obese individuals and a control group of 60 individuals with normal body weight based on BMI (Body Mass Index). Each patient underwent anthropometric measurements, such as height (cm), body weight (kg), which were used to calculate BMI (Body Mass Index). Additional measurements were taken of waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC), to obtain the waist-hip ratio (WHR). Clinical examination of the oral cavity included an assessment of dentition (DMF), oral hygiene API (Approximal Plaque Index) and periodontal tissue (PD – Pocket Depth, CAL – Clinical Attachment Level, %BOP – % Bleeding On Probing) and CPITN (The Community Periodontal Index for Treatment Needs). Results. Statistically significant differences were found between patient groups with BMI ≥ 25 and BMI < 25 in the values of the following parameters: DMF p = 0.005, API p < 0.001, %BOP p < 0.001, PD p < 0.001, CPI p < 0.001. Conclusions. Overweight and obese children were found to have have worse parameters of dental and periodontal health as well as oral hygiene status compared to the group with normal weight. Our observations indicate that overweight and obesity may be potential risk factors for periodontal diseases in the study group.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134078665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Focal changes in bones in the course of non-Hodgkin lymphoma are mostly secondary changes and their primal location in a bone is rare. PBL (primary bone lymphoma) mainly concerns a thighbone and a tibial bone; the primary location in jaw bones is quite sporadic. In diagnostics, there is mainly magnetic resonance, medical scan (tomography), and above all – histopathological test. There is also chemotherapy by choice, and primary location in a jaw or a mandible significantly advances the prognosis. The aim of the work is to introduce a patient who was definitively diagnosed B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma from the early B-cells. The girl reported to Laryngological Clinic, Dental Surgery Clinic for Children, Oncological Clinic of Children’s Memorial Health Institute. The cause of the visit was an elevation on the right side of a nose base, present for two months and misdiagnosed by doctors as a post-traumatic swelling in this region. After introducing laboratory and scan diagnostics and taking biopsy from the lesion, a final conclusion was made. Also, a proper treatment according to the protocol for B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma was introduced. Non-specific B-cell lymphoma picture, as mentioned in the described case, specifically due to location in a jaw bone and a slow pace of growing, may both constitute huge diagnostic problems and deteriorate prognosis. Therefore, it is important to take into account also lymphoma – in such location of a lesion. Moreover, it is worth remembering that the final diagnosis may only be passed on the basis of histopathological examination.","PeriodicalId":445226,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Stomatologia","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134369328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
