{"title":"Zachodnie nowinki na wileńskiej prowincji – wpływy niemieckich poetów na ballady filomatów","authors":"Dominika Grzędowska","doi":"10.36770/bp.695","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.695","url":null,"abstract":"The article describes the influence of foreign, mainly German, literature on the ballads of the Philomaths – Tomasz Zan, Jan Czeczot and Adam Mickiewicz. The inspirations, references, and transformations of literary themes taken from German poets are presented in chronological order. The article begins with the answer to questions: why and how Zan used Lenora by Gottfried August Bürger in Neryna and Twardowski (common character and versification, intensifying the mood of horror). The full image of foreign references in this poet's work is completed by his version of Arion, based on the literary work by August Wilhelm Schlegel. Philomath used the character of a hero from Hellas, but he presented his fate in a dramatically condensed way. All these references lead to the conclusion that Zan transformed foreign threads in his own way, treating this activity as an exercise in his literary technique. A similar approach was shown by Jan Czeczot, who focused on native themes – but he added a large dose of humor, which was characteristic also of the most outstanding philosopher-writer, Adam Mickiewicz. The author of Ballady i romanse included in his collection a free translation of Friedrich Schiller’s Rękawiczka. He gave up the local color in it, creating a more “homely” version. In Świtezianka and Pierwiosnek, Mickiewicz referred to Johann Wolfgang Goethe. Świtezianka refers to Rybak with the motif of a fantastic figure emerging from the water. Pierwiosnek, like Fiołek, contains the lament of a metaphorical flower addressed to an insensitive lover. An analysis of Mickiewicz's references to his masters shows that this poet, like his friends, treated ballads as poetic exercises. He wanted to challenge his favorite writers. At the same time, these references confirm his manifestation of creative freedom. Though the research material is limited, it can be surmised that Słowacki consistently viewed the Mundus Novus (both its northern and southern parts) as a realm of contradiction: on the one hand a place, where positively perceived democratic changes took place, and on the other a land permanently stained with the crime of its colonisers.The introductory part of the text presents the poet’s inspirations from the American prose of Chateaubriand and the adventure novels of James Fenimore Cooper. Further on, I focus on Słowacki’s adolescent works. Although he never chose to depict the idyllic American wilderness, his poems Oda do młodości and Do Michała Rola Skibickiego revealed a strong connection between the symbolism of the botanical world and the historical changes which occurred after the continent’s discovery up till the American Revolutionary War and Bolivar’s activity in South America. The aforementioned contradictions also appeared when Native American characters were mentioned – praise of the noble, innocent savage were mixed with stereotypes and mocking depictions of North American Indians. Another important topic is Słowacki’s change of opinion concerning the US, expressed in a letter to his mother from 1834, in which he makes known how disappointed he is about American pragmatism and lack of ideals. Grusza","doi":"10.36770/bp.696","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.696","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of the article is to present the connections between Malvina, or the Heart’s Intuition with The Works of Ossian, which are noticeable in many aspects of the work, especially in the literary figure of the title character. The interest in the songs of the Scottish bard among the writers of the literary school of Puławy made Maria Wirtemberska attentive to the problems and aesthetics of James Macpherson's work. Malwina resembles Ossian's heroines in many aspects, which are revealed by endowing her with specific qualities, abilities, and a way of perceiving reality. The character of the Malvina also has several features in common with Macpherson's Ossian. The Duchess compares the Bard's tendency to transform memories into poetry with the attributes that characterize the images of the women described in Ossian's stories. Malvina also combines the trait of heroine from a sentimental novel, endowed with a tenderness, with the heroism and courage of a chivalrous ethos. The use of visual elements typical for Osianism, including the tendency to present the main character on the background of a lunar landscape, and the fascination with the knightly tradition, allowed the Duchess to create a heroine that would stand out from the female characters portrayed in Polish literature before 1816.
