In the first period of activity, the main theologians of the Unity recognized the superiority of virginity over marriage, which was perceived as a necessary evil for the preservation of offspring. Under the influence of Martin Luther’s teachings, marriage began to be viewed positively and a woman was appreciated as a wife and mother. However, it was not until the middle of the 17th century that the marriage status was equalized with the maiden status. In the discussions on marital status, a lot of space was devoted to the marriages of priests and celibacy. At the beginning, the article explains the concept of misalliance and outlines the historical context, with particular emphasis on the situation of women in Poland of that time. Then the focus turned to the analysis of selected texts in the context of questioning authority and negating the prevailing social norms. Dziedzic","doi":"10.36770/bp.773","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.773","url":null,"abstract":"In this article, I discussed the issue of ekphrasis and hypotyposis, understood as literary descriptions (and interpretations) of works of art, in poems by Halina Tvaranovich, a Belarusian poet and professor of Slavic literature. The subject of the study was poems from the volume Amber Apple, including ekphrastic and hypotypical references to motifs of religious art such as the Pietà and the Mother of Sorrows. The paper discusses analogies between these poems and the sculpture of Pietà by Nicolas Cousteau, Orthodox iconography, and religious painting. The author of Amber Apple is primarily interested in the deep spiritual message of the artifacts she describes, as well as motifs and images present in art, their expression, and their impact on the recipients. The book deals with the global problems of civilization that have determined the consciousness of modern society. The author demonstrates that addressing specific topical issues (ecology and climate change, diseases, and destruction of personal identification under the influence of pop culture and the digital age) acquires genre characteristics in post-realist prose. Traditional genres (soap operas, family sagas, melodrama, etc.) have been enriched with features of other genres or methods of seeing the world. Budzanowska-Weglenda","doi":"10.36770/bp.779","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.779","url":null,"abstract":"This article presents what and how the Cistercian monk Galand of Reigny, who lived in the 12th century, wrote about the family in his short work Libellus proverbiorum, dedicated to the famous St Bernard of Clairvaux. The Book of Proverbs and its author are almost completely unknown in Poland. However, Libellus is a research-interesting example of the ‘light’ religious literature of the time written at a ‘medium’ level. The paper first introduces Galand and the monastic community to which he belonged and briefly discusses his literary work and the nature and diverse content of the work in question. In the second part, it discusses those passages of the Libellus proverbiorum in which the author addresses the theme of marriage, and family – in the literal sense, as well as in relation to the community of monks or to the Church as a whole. Firstly, the references in Galand’s text to biblical figures of spouses and families (Adam and Eve, Isaac and Rebecca and their sons, among others) are pointed out, then to well-known figures from Greek mythology (Orpheus and Eurydice), then to references to the life of ordinary families known to the author: to spouses, to mothers, widows and mothers-in-law, sons and daughters, and finally to comparisons of the life of a monastic and ecclesiastical community to a family united by love. Galand evokes the image of the family both in the proverbs themselves and in his (literal or allegorical) explanations, glosses them. His work carries, in an accessible, simple, and sometimes humorous form, moral instructions to deepen the religiousness and spirituality of both the monk and the layperson. The article includes excerpts from the Book of Proverbs translated by the author of this paper. {"title":"Матывы яблыка і Бога ў паэтычным зборніку \"Чацвёртая стража\" (2004 года выдання) Галіны Тварановіч","authors":"Ángela Espinosa Ruiz","doi":"10.36770/bp.771","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36770/bp.771","url":null,"abstract":"This article is aimed at the contextualization and analysis of, first and foremost, Halina Tvaranovic as a researcher and poet in the circles of the Belarusian borderland tradition within the territory of the Polish Republic and, secondly, of the motifs of the apple and God in the context of representing plants and religious symbols and concepts that are prominent in her work, most especially, in her third poetry collection, The Fourth Guard. In order to achieve this goal, we have selected a series of elements that shape the poetry in the aforementioned book, considered the author’s semantics, style, and background, and evaluated the literary and culturally significant of these elements in their context. We have taken into account the parallels and links present within the book, as well as their relationship to the poet’s other works and their connections to other poets within the literary processes of the Podlasie region and Belarusian-language literature in a broader scope. They were represented by the preaching friars, cloistered nuns, and lay Dominicans. There were numerous saints and blessed who used to be members of those orders and the memory of them was perpetuated in, among others, the religious oratory of the 17th century. Among the preachers of those days, Father Fabian holds a prominent place as an author of Latin oratories and sermons de sanctis delivered in the Polish language. The fact that a large portion of the speeches dedicated to saints, which he included in the collection Orationes ecclesiasticae, dealt with Dominican saints indicates Birkowski’s particularly strong spiritual bond with members of the monastic community that he himself belong to.
