This in turn permits developers to create various tactile icons, or tactons to communicate information through the non-visual and non-auditory modality of touch. Tactons are messages conveyed through various patterns of vibrations. In this paper, we present our preliminary work on the use of tactons in order to discreetly convey information regarding the mood and urgency of text messages received on mobile phones. Such mechanism replaces the simple buzzing effect currently associated with text message notifications. Our preliminary evaluation shows encouraging results in terms of the ability of users to distinguish and recall various tactons produced by a mobile phone.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115241927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, we propose a novel event-based method of synthesizing the vibratory characteristics of different types of material, such as broken stone, concrete, snow, sand, and earth, during walking, by using automatically generated Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters with pseudo-randomized coefficients to ensure a unique vibration at every step. As a first step, theoretical results were obtained by providing a simulated force input signal into the IIR filter's Real-Time Simulink model. The outcomes proved to be promising and demonstrated that the synthesized signals are highly comparable to the measured material response in both time and frequency domains. A comparison of the signals obtained by the proposed IIR filter approach and a physical model based technique is presented. Finally, this paper presents a new lower limb prosthetic-skin interface with the capabilities of rendering interactions measured at the foot such as vibrations and pressure points.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128032266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the SPIDAR-mouse is convenient for displaying haptic feedback in a PC environment, the force presented with the SPIDAR-mouse is limited to 2D lateral force. Although a gradient-based method is typically used for generating 2D lateral force in haptic rendering, it did not have sufficient performance in representing geometric shapes. We therefore introduced an impulse-based method to the haptic rendering in representing bump information with 2D lateral force. In addition, a polygon reduction function was implemented to reduce the number of polygons in the synthesized model, improving performance in response. A preliminary experiment was conducted to evaluate the haptic interaction system. The results indicated that users were able to distinguish 3D shapes with distinctive geometric conditions, but had difficulty distinguishing fine differences such as similar types of bumps.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132878928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a holistic design valuing human capabilities, hardware ergonomics and environmental factors to improve usability in context of execution when interacting with legacy software on touch surface and name it as FiTouch. FiTouch proposes a touch-friendly GUI for legacy software by analyzing issues raised by old GUI, which is designed for mouse interaction and adopted for touch interaction. We provide details on the feasibility and benefits of our new device-adaptive GUI generating approach in the evaluation by giving an example of transforming apps designed for PC to Windows-based laptops with touchscreen. FiTouch also concludes some suggestions on designing operating system across hardware platforms.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124495226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, without this guidance, individuals who undergo home therapy or training are unable to determine whether or not they are making meaningful progress, and, as a result, many give up prior to completion of their programs. To address these issues, the authors propose a toolkit for the design of games that support motor skill learning and relearning consisting of three main components: (1) an “intelligent stick” hardware interface, (2) motion authoring software for the design of new motion patterns, and (3) a framework for mapping elements of game design to skill learning. Prototypes for the first two components have been developed, and results from an initial usability study involving 9 participants are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114393715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a distributed architecture with multiple haptic interfaces to improve the fine motor skill disability. The preceding works with haptics for rehabilitation and motor recovery practices a stand alone infrastructure with time consuming operations for training. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed system provides three significant contributions: (i) a real time 3-phase operation to avoid invariable and time consuming practice with recorded exercises; (ii) a distributed environment to support one-to-many remote accessibility for training and practice; (iii) a novel force rendering algorithm to handle better synchronization among the haptic interfaces in the network to provide smooth force feedback in real time. The effectiveness of our system is demonstrated by the user study that also includes the evaluation from a specialist.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126858812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are made primarily of sensors and actuators, and have the distinguished features of “Perception”. In order to build a dataset serving the design phases of software applications development for these interfaces, the need for an ontology for Haptic Interface Systems (HIS) comprising sensors and actuators or, in general, transducers is needed. In this paper, we propose SODHO, a state of the art Service Oriented Ontology for haptic interfaces. This ontology, uses OWL (Web Ontology Language), and a Knowledge Base of what is present so far within the haptics (sensors and actuators) domain.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122749469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For voting to be acceptable and wanted, it needs to be secretive, anonymus, fast, and reliable. The main aim of this paper is to propose the Tactile Opinion Poll (TOP) system for silent feedback that enables users to cast their vote and opinion in a secure and private way that is both intuitive and easy. The TOP system captures user feedback using haptic modality in real-time by squeezing a smart tangible ball (called the squeezometer) that securely communicates the user feedback to a central software via Wi-Fi. The squeezometer display vibrotactile clues to confirm user selection via a vibrotactile motor embedded in the squeezometer device. A preliminary evaluation is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the system and investigate an optimal voting protocol that the system may use.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122400292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These exploration events are highly relevant for telerobotics, but their influence on stiffness perception is largely unexplored. Our study contributes to the understanding of the limits of stiffness perception for human-robot interactions. According to our experiments, mean Weber fraction values between 0.134 and 0.166 are obtained for a reference stiffness value of 200 N/m. Our results also show that the differential sensitivity for stiffness is not significantly affected by the actual exploration event. To test the constancy of the extracted Weber fraction values five further reference stiffness values are evaluated suggesting a constant stiffness sensitivity value in the range of stiffness between 135 and 390 N/m.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127237571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a novel general framework for spherical HDR imaging for image-based virtual environments from a moving camera. The framework is composed of three major stages: calibration and alignment, spherical stereo matching and HDR composition. In the first stage, camera poses are found and spherical images are rotationally aligned. In the second stage, disparity maps are calculated with a spherical stereo vision toolkit. In the third stage, spherical images are warped from neighboring views to a target view based on enhanced disparity maps, and a spherical HDR radiance map is obtained from the warped exposure bracket. Our method is efficient because we generate a spherical HDR image for each of the viewpoints of the LDR images. We demonstrate our framework on indoor and outdoor scenes and compare our results with two recent state-of-the-art HDR imaging methods.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121957747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
