Newly introduced technologies can enhance traditional physical therapy, first, by complementing the expert's work, and second, by providing a platform for rich data collection and analysis. In this work, we present a prototype adaptive rehabilitation instrument, based on the use of robotic arm, which can be dynamically controlled to guide the exercise motion of the upper extremities, in patients with motor disabilities. Our proposed method, enables simultaneous active and passive control of the robotic arm, to produce adaptive force feedback for motion guidance, and allow for data collection, for patient motor function assessment.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115913409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have designed and developed a tactile sleeve to help ASD patients potentially learn how to manage hypersensitivities to human contact through virtual experiences of being touched. Our tactile sleeve simulates both simple and dynamic social touches on the upper arm of the user. These touch gestures are perceived from phantom tactile sensations and apparent tactile motions that are generated by a rectangular grid of vibrotactile actuators. Our design requirements for the sleeve included being inexpensive to produce and integrable with prior ASD intervention software. We describe our formative process for developing the sleeve and conclude with details of our final prototype.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122739631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several compression methods have been implemented, including Position-Based Haptic Data (PBHD) and Position-Force Haptic Data (PFHD), and the Perception Deadband (PD). In this paper, we have also proposed and investigated a velocity-based Position Extrapolation (PE) method to improve the Perception Deadband technique. We have designed and developed a virtual Fitts' type task for this study. Experiments have been conducted using this task to objectively measure user performance in the CHVE, when the compression methods have been applied to the haptic data. Although, our focus has mostly been on the effects of the compression methods on user performance, associate user perception ratings have also been reported in this paper. Results show that subjects did higher errors when PBHD model were in use, compared to PFDB. In addition, the results show that applying PE method improved the subjects' perception rating with a small increase in the task error.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129345764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efficiency and stability are of major importance for the corresponding visual and haptic rendering. In this paper, we present a novel system for a real-time and robust simulation of needle-tissue interaction with haptic devices. The soft tissue is modeled using the classic shape matching method for its excellent numerical stability. It can interact with a one dimensional inextensible rigid/flexible virtual needle freely. The feedback force from the needle is formulated as the gradient of the potential energy of the soft tissue based on particle constraint. Under the framework of shape matching, the feedback force can be efficiently evaluated and smoothly rendered through haptic devices. Our model can also support various material properties so that tissues of different stiffness can be well handled.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"2006 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117044501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These cueings are used when a gait issue is classified in real-time by an artificial intelligent algorithm using wearable IMU signals located at the lower limb. Such gait issue could be freezing of gait (FOG) and Bradykinesia symptoms. This system detects freezing periods and plays a rhythmic pattern such as Tacton or Earcon in haptic or audio respectively. When prior training is done with an appropriate serious game, cueing could help to recover gait cadence and then help to avoid fall. Both types of cueing were used in different research works without prior analysis on the best stimulation to use in a perturbed environment. Since rhythmic auditory sound could be an issue in a real outdoor environment, this paper suggests evaluating rhythmic stimulation cueing with the Time Up and Go clinical assessment test used for mobility evaluation.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"554 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123111080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such acceleration signals can be used to recognize or to classify object surface textures. The temporal and spectral properties of the acquired signals, however, heavily depend on different parameters like the applied force on the surface or the lateral velocity during the exploration. Robust features that are invariant against such scan-time parameters are currently lacking, but would enable texture classification and recognition using uncontrolled human exploratory movements. In this paper, we introduce a haptic texture database which allows for a systematic analysis of feature candidates. The publicly available database includes recorded accelerations measured during controlled and well-defined texture scans, as well as uncontrolled human free hand texture explorations for 43 different textures. As a preliminary feature analysis, we test and compare six well-established features from audio and speech recognition together with a Gaussian Mixture Model-based classifier on our recorded free hand signals. Among the tested features, best results are achieved using Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), leading to a texture recognition accuracy of 80.2%.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114991597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A desktop augmented reality system is presented in which the user is not co-located with the environment and a 3DOF haptic device, providing force feedback, is adopted for user interaction. The interaction paradigm allows the user to select and manipulate virtual objects superimposed upon a visual representation of the real workspace. The approach also supports physics-based animation of rigid bodies. In the proposed method automatic object recognition and registration are performed from 3D range data acquired by a laser scanner mounted on a robot arm. We next investigate the potential of the augmented reality system for programming manipulation tasks by demonstration. Experiments show that a precedence graph, encoding the sequential structure of the task, can be successfully extracted from multiple user demonstrations.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127092891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technology also found a suitable niche in some areas of medicine. However, while sports and arts also present important opportunities for analysis of the human gesture, whether to improve performance or prevent injuries, the potential of motion capture was not yet fully exploited in these fields. This paper examines the potential of markerless motion capture in the context of piano pedagogy and performance evaluation when somatic training methods are used. An affordable motion capture platform based on Kinect sensor is designed to suit the specific requirements of piano playing, and an early experimental investigation of the suitability of the technology for this application is reported.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115938095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our system integrates the extended finite element (XFEM) into these packages in order to model the deformation of a dissected body without introducing any topological changes to the underlying volumetric tetrahedral mesh. We develop a semi-progressive cutting method based on a local neighborhood search on the tetrahedral mesh, which avoids the computational cost of a global intersection test. The performance of our system is tested on a low-end commercial desktop PC to demonstrate the feasibility of real-time dissection simulation that is computationally inexpensive.","PeriodicalId":440723,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE) Proceedings","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115432485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
