But site contains all normal elements of an existing building that can pose fire hazard plus many extra risk factors such as flammable chemicals, spark-generating tools, inadequate provision of fire protection system etc. Hence, risk associated with fire at sites for new construction alteration or demolition is higher. Human response performance is also poorer for site fire adding to the seriousness of the problem. While in India, infrastructure is booming and at the same time many devastating fires have taken place in recent years, it is hightime to formulate guidelines to control site fire. Considering the limitation of using a conventional fire protection system at site, this paper reviews fire norms prevalent in other countries and highlights the major concerns. In this context, extended role of various key players of construction industry such as designers, contractors, clients etc is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124862853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We select organization on the basis of lowest bid offered in a tender for particular contract having only the knowledge of reputation of work and the rate offered for the tender by the organization at the least we offer the contract to the organization. We do not pay much attention towards the methodologies adopted in solving the problems that arise the various sector in organization. So, there is an urge in finding out the functional efficiency of an organization. In the present scenario experts are trying out better solutions or enhancing organizational effectiveness. Concepts such as total quality management, reengineering, partnering, conformance to ISO standards, and other emerging management strategies are making headlines. However all of the techniques stress measurement and continuous assessments how the firm organized as important steps in improvement. Therefore it is clearly becoming essential for construction firms to develop valid methods of assessing and prediction their level of organizational effectiveness and hence achieve consistency in the projects performance. For that we need a novel approach for assessing the efficacy of the system used. In any organization the quality and the productivity depends upon the effectiveness of the systems implemented in the organization. So, it becomes necessary for evaluating the functional capability of the organization. We propose Artificial Neural Network (ANN) as decision aiding tool for evaluating the effectiveness and thereby reducing the flaws incorporated by the other techniques in use.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121796726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We want to find out the effectiveness of such programs whether it would be useful to other construction workers, particularly women coolie workers. With these objectives, we prepared and administered a questionnaire to construction workers, supervisors and others. The questionnaire use items with five point Likert scale, covering barriers of skill development of general and construction workers, training environment of female construction workers, cost of training and training methodology adopted in the model training program. Consolidation and comparison of feedback based on gender show that perceptions of female and male are very similar in many cases. There are few items where the differences in their perceptions are significant. The findings are that female construction workers can be given proper motivation, improve their literacy and numeracy, train them in trades of their liking, and provide practical training near or at their work places with the help of supervisors and engineers. Cost of training and sharing of the cost are important issues. We recommend 15- days compulsory training every year to every female worker of construction industry. The S-REACT training program is a baby step solution addressing some of the concerns of skill development of female workers and coolie workers.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115161783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, High Performance Concrete mixes with silica fume of 0%, 10%, and 20% with addition of glass fibre of diameter 14μ and 12mm length at various percentages as 0%, 0.3%, and 0.6% by the volume of cement on M75 grade of concrete. The mix proportions of concrete had a constant binder of 0.26 and superplasticizer was added based on the required degree of workability. For each mix standard sizes of cubes, cylinders and prisms as per Indian Standards were cast and tested for compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength at the age of 28 days. The addition of silica fume shows early strength gaining property and that of glass fibre control the cracking due to shrinkage. The results are satisfactory for the use of 10% silica fume and 0.3% glass fibre in producing High Performance concrete.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131704271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For M20 concrete we can retemper the concrete upto 120 min. but forM40 concrete retempering time is only 30 min. Adding water to a plastic mix to increase slump is an extremelycommon practice, even though it is not recommended because it increases the porosity of concrete. Concrete often arrives on site more than half an hour after initial mixing. Placement operations can take anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes, depending on the field conditions and the size of the load. When the slump decreases to an unacceptable level during the operations, water is added to the mix. Objective of this paper to study the strength characteristics of retempered concrete M20 & M40 concrete. Usually the retempering process is used with normal concrete or with ready mixed concrete; an attempt is made to check the compressive and flexural strength of normal retempered concrete with an addition of retarder in three different percentages as 0.2%, 0.4% and 0.6% at retempering time of 15 minutes to 90 minutes.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130030883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bridge pier is idealized as a column subjected to axial load and biaxial moment. Slender member subjected to axial force and biaxial bending moment fails due to buckling effect. This buckling is caused due to slenderness effect also known as ‘PΔ’ effect. The objective of the research reported in this paper is to obtain a theoretical formulation, using beam column theory for studying the behavior of straight hollow circular section and tapered hollow circular section of the bridge pier. Study is carried for different heights of bridge pier for straight hollow circular pier and tapered hollow circular pier. Study is carried by considering two lane box type bridge girder. Providing a straight hollow circular section for a direct & flexural action proves to be uneconomical. The straight hollow circular section of bridge pier is replaced by a tapered hollow circular pier section in the present study.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"2018 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114699409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process involved 2D orthogonal down-cut milling with the application of two dimension thermo mechanical plane strain model. The updated Lagrangian formulation was used where cutting simulation does not involve element separation but remesh automatically when element distorted critically. AISI1055 mild steel properties were used as the comparison. Various types of friction models were adopted in obtaining precise results. Predicted cutting force and cutting edge temperature are validated against corresponding experimental values by previous researchers. From the simulations, the shear friction model of 0.8 is the best friction model where 10% errors were obtained for comparison mild steel AISI1055 FEA results with the experimental approach for increasing radial depth. Lower cutting force predicted for laser sintered materials compared to AISI1055 due to lower Young modulus. Cutting edge temperature predicted for laser sintered material is higher due to its low thermal conductivity compared to AISI1055.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129001167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The content of plastic waste was varied from 0, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 % by dry weight of silt. The size of waste plastic chips was 15 mm x 5 mm in the study. The results of this study reveal that there is significant improvement in the strength silt and considerable reduction in swell pressure with the inclusion of small quantity of waste plastic chips. Mitigation of expansive soils using waste plastic chips can be a good solution to reduce the swell potential of silt on which buildings and roads are going to be constructed","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121192277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the requirements of more stringent route and high torsional stiffness as well as a desire for a greater sense of aesthetics, curved box girder bridges have become increasingly popular and have been an interesting subject of research. In this paper, the numerous models for curved box girders are analysed using LUSAS FEA software for different parameters such as span lengths, radii and loadings. The resultant bending moments, shear and the torsional moments of the various curved box girders are compared. Also the feasibility and stability of the curved box girder of various span length and radius considering support reactions are discussed.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123420796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
