How and to what degree the sand content affects on shrinkage limit, compaction characteristics, stress-strain behaviour, shear parameters (angle of internal friction and cohesion) and coefficient of consolidation studied in detail. In this paper, fine grained soil like BC soil and shedi soil with different percentage of sand (10% to 60%) was prepared and compacted with water content at optimum and a systematic series of UU-Triaxial test is conducted. Results of the laboratory tests shows that at optimum content 10% to 60% of sand, the results reveal that undrained shear strength, as the sand content increases in fine soil mixture the cohesion of soil decreases with increases in frictional angle at optimum content. The percentage increased in friction angle increased at steady state from 130 to 280 and the cohesion decreased from 0.71 to 0.39 kg/cm2 with increasing sand content.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134471674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Further it is considered to be an essential element to maintain a proper balance between ground water fluctuation and rainfall distribution. Due to irrigation, urbanization and industrialization, the ground water level has declined to a larger extend. Hence in the present work an attempt has been made to analyse the groundwater fluctuation by taking the upper Ponniyar watershed as a study area using geographical information system (GIS). Also a correlative study has been made between the rainfall distribution and ground water fluctuation during the period from 1992 to 2012.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122728695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They contain about 75% of the Earth’s fresh water and are a source of major rivers. The interaction between glaciers and climate represents a particularly sensitive approach. On the global scale, air temperature is considered to be the most important factor reflecting glacier retreat, but this has not been demonstrated for tropical glaciers. Mass balance studies of glaciers indicate that the contributions of all mountain glaciers to rising sea level during the last century to be 0.2 to 0.4 mm/yr. Global mean temperature has risen by just over 0.60 C over the last century with accelerated warming in the last 10-15 years. The major impact will be on the world’s water resources. Many climatologists believe that the decline in mountain glaciers is one of the first observable signs of the human induced global warming.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124374035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Monitoring of these resources is important for the assessment of availability of water in the Himalayan Rivers. The mapping of Glaciers is very difficult task because of the inaccessibility and remoteness of the terrain. Remote sensing techniques are often the only way to analyze glaciers in remote mountains and to monitor a large number of glaciers in multitemporal manner. This paper presents the results obtained from the analysis of a set of multitemporal Landsat MSS, TM and ETM+images for the monitoring and analysis of Burphu Glacier.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126204756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The intention of making a restaurant in such a way that it solves basic problem of fixtures and fittings. However, the construction phase of a good restaurant is a critical to design inside and outside structure. Often the builders do not know all the factors to be considered that can maintain a safe, hygienic and healthy environment. It is believed that when restaurant building is ergonomically furnished, then a maximum benefit will be achieved. To meet with the individual’s specific needs, an analysis of user’s requirement is the most important factor to be considered in the design of special restaurants. User’s data such as anthropometric dimension, user’s choices and preferences are also necessary to design a suitable living environment in restaurants. In this regard, this paper illustrates some ergonomic features to design and develop good restaurants environment. For the present study 120 workers were selected from the four south Indian restaurant i.e. Sri nidhi sagar, Raaga the family restaurant, Tamarind and Inchara the family restaurant, Bangalore city, Karnataka State. Descriptive cum experimental research design was used for the present study. Purposive sampling procedure was followed to select the sample and data was gathered by interview method. The workers were mainly literate and aged from 25-40 years. The data showed that the existing conditions of the restaurant workers were satisfactory i.e. work environment.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132080854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment has carried out to investigate the behavioural study of coconut fibre in concrete member. The Coconut fibre is treated using natural latex before using in concrete, so that it is not be affected by moisture content presented in concrete. In this experimental study 28 days of the compressive strength is carried out using different coconut fibre length of 20mm, 25mm and 30mm respectively with a different percentage as 0.5%, 0.75% and 1%. The selected input variables include the length of the fiber, percentage of the fiber, and maximum load of the specimen. In this paper, Back-Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) model has been developed to predict the Compressive strength of Concrete members. A parametric study is carried out using BPNN to study the influence of each parameter affecting the characteristic compressive strength of the concrete. The results of this study indicate that BPNN provide good predictions which are better than those from other available methods. These models can serve as reliable and simple predictive tools for the prediction of compressive strength of the members.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124060643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The three Reynolds number based on the bulk mean velocity and the channel height at the diffuser entrance is 18000, 40,000 and 60,000. The maximum pressure is obtained to be zero skin friction along the diffuser wall. The turbulent flow inside the diffuser is predicted using three Reynolds average navier stokes based turbulence models are considered for the study i.e., K-e standard, K-e RNG and K-w SST. The designed diffuser geometry has analyzed with fluent for its design intent. The variation of static pressure, velocity, skin friction coefficient and pressure coefficient are studied for three different Reynolds numbers. The designed diffuser geometry has been used in gas turbine engine exhaust. The function of diffuser is the kinetic energy of incoming exhaust gases from the power turbines is converted into static pressure through the diffuser. It also helps in discharging of exhaust gases from high speed to low speed, and also to turn the flow of gases from axial to radial direction.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128958418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the parties to a dispute can predict the outcome of the dispute with some certainty, they are more likely to settle the matter out of court resulting in avoidance of expenses and aggravation associated with adjudication. The outcome of construction disputes are affected by a large number of complex and interrelated factors. Dispute settlement is mainly based on the facts of the case like conditions of the contracts; actual situations on site; documents presented during arbitral proceedings etc which are termed as intrinsic factors. It is also observed that though the case may be the same but it is interpreted differently at different levels. This suggests that there may be other factors related to the arbitrator’s characteristics and other psychology aspects further termed as extrinsic factor influencing decisions.. The paper focuses on the feasibility of the Artificial Intelligence approach in predicting the outcome of construction dispute and enlists the various extrinsic factors. The tool so developed would result in dispute avoidance to some extent and would reduce the pressure on judiciary.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128773071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pull out tests were conducted by placing a static compressive load of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% of their ultimate capacity in compression on pile groups of different configuration and length to diameter ratio embedded in sand. The experimental results indicated that the presence of compressive load on the pile group decreases the net uplift capacity of the group and the decrease depends on the magnitude of the compressive load. Based on the experimental results a semi empirical method has been suggested to predict the net uplift capacity of a group of piles in the presence of compressive loading. The predictions are found to be in good agreement with the measured values validating the developed method of analysis.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133357234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research is proposed to replace the constituent materials by mineral Admixtures and adding chemical admixtures. Also it is proposed to use self curing compound instead of conventional water curing. Many researchers studied about the self compacting concrete only and not for self compacting and self curing concrete, but this study proposed a methodology for self compacting and curing concrete beams. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, modulus of concrete have been found out and compared with controlled beams, self compacting concrete beams, self curing concrete beams and admixture beams. Beams in size of 125mm×250mm×1000mm were cast and tested to analyze the behaviour. The ANN modelling has compared the flexural behaviour of beams at various stages such as yield load, ultimate load and deflection.","PeriodicalId":437898,"journal":{"name":"The Asian Review of Civil Engineering","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115429091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
