Larkin-Lieffers","doi":"10.1353/ILS.2013.0004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/ILS.2013.0004","url":null,"abstract":"Public venues providing books for young children (stores, daycares, preschools, out-of-school cares, classrooms, and libraries) in a Canadian median-household-income neighbourhood were visited to determine the balance of stories and informational books for beginning readers ages 4 to 8, placed on display. Stories were heavily favoured in almost all venues; 86% of books on display were stories and 14% were informational books. Few children would likely find a broad range of informational topics. The public library has an opportunity to display a balance of genres to support beginning readers’ informational as well as fictional needs and interests. Les sites publics (magasins, garderies, garderies en dehors de l’école, mater-nelles, classes d’école, bibliothèques) d’un quartier de ménages canadiens à revenu moyen mettant des livres à la disposition des jeunes enfants ont fait l’objet d’une visite afin de déterminer la proportion de livres de fiction et de livres d’information présentés aux lecteurs débutants, d’âge compris entre 4 et 8 ans. Dans presque tous les sites, c’est la fiction qui a été fortement privilégiée ; dans le quartier considéré, la proportion des livres présentés a été de 86 pour cent pour les livres de fiction contre 14 pour cent pour les livres d’information. Peu d’enfants seraient en mesure de trouver un large éventail de sujets d’information. Les bibliothèques publiques ont la possibilité de proposer une présentation équilibrée entre les genres afin de répondre aux besoins et aux intérêts des lecteurs débutants en information comme en fiction.","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"37 1","pages":"24 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2013-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2013.0004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66360351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A historical warrant for this status is presented along with an overview of the principles underlying the development of and relationship between the Canadian Subject Headings and the French-language vocabulary Répertoire de vedettes-matière. Through the use of specific examples, bilingual equivalencies pertaining to people, identity, history, and society are discussed. S’inspirant des théories de Pierre Bourdieu et Hope Olson, cette étude se penche sur les vedettes-matière employées pour décrire des documents portant sur le Québec en tant que société distincte dans l’espace discursif bilingue du système de catalogage canadien. Le contexte historique du concept de « société distincte » est présenté, ainsi qu’un survol des principes qui régissent tant le développement des Canadian Subject Headings et du Répertoire de vedettes-matière que leur relation. Des exemples précis illustrent certaines divergences dans l’utilisation de termes portant sur les gens, le concept d’identité, l’histoire et la société.","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"37 1","pages":"1 - 23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2013-03-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2013.0005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66359894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What They Don’t Teach You in Library School is the outcome of information gaps that she experienced as she began her new career in librarianship and of her desire to help new librarians achieve a fast, successful start. This book is part of the monographic series aptly titled ALA Guides for the Busy Librarian. This book supplements but does not replace existing literature. Topics covered include searching for a first position, acclimatizing to a new work environment, and transitioning from novice to veteran. The reference-like organization of chapters clearly communicates the content’s relevance to the reader. Headings point to each chapter’s topic (“What This Chapter Is About”), its reason for inclusion (“Why Should You Care?”), key issues (“The Heart of the Matter”), and suggested steps to follow. A set of references can be found at the end of many chapters. A glossary is provided when appropriate. Each chapter includes relevant sample documents—check lists, survey extracts, and representative handouts—which illuminate the discussion. Canadian readers are cautioned that suggested resources are not necessarily Canadian in focus; however, the topics are basic and fundamental to North American librarianship. These resources have been carefully selected and they are relevant. A subset of electronic resources was consulted and most URLs were found to be stable. As a second-career librarian, I relate to the author. The chapter on presenting resonated with me as I was new to public speaking, and the treatment here will help to alleviate distress experienced by novice teachers. I appreciated the inclusion of practical information about marketing, trend tracking, strategic planning, assessment, and space management, as many librarians will find themselves on related committees early in their career. More supplementary resources on these topics would be helpful. I wish I had seen the information on choosing a first position and evaluating a work environment when I was in high school. I especially enjoyed the section on idea management—where to look for ideas, how to adapt them, and how to convert an idea into a proposal for a new","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"36 1","pages":"R1 - R2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2012-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2012.0016","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66360133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
