The methodology combines two approaches. The first approach is quantitative and is based on statistical data concerning search activities on ScienceDirect between January 2008 and April 2009. The second approach is qualitative and is based on semi-directed interviews of researchers authorized to access ScienceDirect. The researchers' information-seeking activities on ScienceDirect follow two complementary usage logics. On the one hand, they follow search and discovery itineraries, and, on the other hand, they implement continuous and recurrent access mechanisms. In both cases, the researchers' searching behaviours on ScienceDirect are similar to their behaviours on the Web. This study concerns a previously unpublished large-scale analysis of STM searching behaviours. Furthermore, the mixed methodology used allows the results to be compared and, thus, the clearest and most objective interpretation to be obtained.Cet article s'intéresse aux pratiques de consultation des périodiques électroniques des enseignants-chercheurs du réseau universitaire français, dans les domaines STM, sur une plateforme d'éditeur, ScienceDirect. Le premier volet méthodologique s'appuie sur une étude quantitative basée sur les statistiques des activités de consultations de la plateforme ScienceDirect, entre janvier 2008 et avril 2009. Le second volet, de type qualitatif, est basé sur des entretiens semi-directifs menés auprès d'un panel de ces mêmes enseignants-chercheurs. Les résultats montrent que deux logiques d'usages corollaires expliquent l'activité de consultation : l'emprunt d'itinéraires de recherche et de découvertes d'une part, la mise en œuvre de mécanismes d'accès pérennes et récurrents, d'autre part. Ces deux logiques soulignent le caractère fondamental de la navigation chez les chercheurs qui trans-posent leurs pratiques du web sur la plateforme ScienceDirect.","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"36 1","pages":"105 - 88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2012-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2012.0012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66360072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demand for knowledge workers is on the increase, yet little is known with regard to their career perceptions and attitudes. This article focuses on exploring the issues and factors affecting the career development of South African knowledge workers. Specialization and dual career ladders are required to ensure that the knowledge residing in the minds of knowledge workers is not lost. A survey was conducted to determine career development opportunities for knowledge workers in South Africa. The results revealed that knowledge workers are motivated through traditional means such as money, awards, and recognition, but place less emphasis on temporary assignments and mentoring than their counterparts from other countries. Organizations should leverage the knowledge contained in the minds of their knowledge workers to create a sustainable, competitive advantage.","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"36 1","pages":"28 - 51"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2012-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2012.0004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66359871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this ethnographic pilot study, I begin to create a picture of leaders’ information seeking, first for personal faith building and then for corporate decision making, and I consider the impact of new technologies on these processes. Religious IS did not differ significantly from other everyday-life information seeking (ELIS) experiences, except when subjects were acting in leadership roles. Prominent themes were theological diversity and prayer. Quelle est l’expérience de recherche d’information des dirigeants d’une église en transition, tandis qu’ils sont en quête de la volonté de Dieu pour leur église ? Dans cetteétude ethnographique pilote, je tente d’élaborer une image de la recherche d’information des dirigeants, d’abord pour l’édification de leur foi personnelle, puis pour leurs prises de décisions corporatives, et j’examine l’impact des nouvelles technologies sur ces processus. La recherche d’information religieuse ne diffère pas significativement des expériences de recherche d’information de la vie quotidienne, sauf dans les rôles de leadership. Les thèmes importants ont été la diversité théologique et la prière.","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"36 1","pages":"16 - 27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2012-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2012.0003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66359719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach is at odds with traditional professional practices of librarianship. This paper focuses on two competing approaches to public library board governance: neoliberalism and communitarianism. In the assessing of the discourse between these two models, it is contended that neoliberalism has instilled operational procedures and an organizational culture that are contrary to a spirit of positive public engagement, a spirit that should be the cornerstone of public library boards. In contrast, communitarianism, by providing a set of guiding principles, makes public library boards more accessible within their communities, and can therefore lead to the rediscovery of the public library board’s positive spirit of public engagement. Through a search for praxis, recommendations on how public library board trustees can maintain their dual responsibility of professional ethics of librarianship while remaining an integral part of their local community are proffered.","PeriodicalId":43727,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science-Revue Canadienne Des Sciences De L Information et De Bibliotheconomie","volume":"36 1","pages":"1 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2012-03-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/ILS.2012.0002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66359679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
