Today, most of these plastics parts are scrapped and sent to landfills at the end of life of the products. Recycling of engineering thermoplastics has become a major challenge for many business equipment and computer manufacturers. The challenge is to find closed loop recycling or similar applications for the many thermoplastics materials used in these products at the end of life. This paper examines the infrastructure required to recycle engineering plastics into quality flake material for reuse in copier applications. Also, the cost to recover parts and the opportunities to recycle the materials into similar or closed loop recycling applications is determined. In addition, the physico-mechanical properties of production parts molded from first and second generation recycled structural foam high impact polystyrene (HIPS)-SF were measured, analysed and are discussed. Finally, the paper summarizes some of the \"trash-to-cash\" projects being pursued at Xerox Corporation to maximize the savings from materials salvaged/recovered from their remanufacturing programs. In general, these activities support their overall environmental leadership program.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125264551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various polyaniline derivatives have been found to be viable in a number of lithographic applications. These have included charge dissipators for electron-beam lithography and SEM mask metrology, conducting resists, and imageable metal seeders. Most of the polyanilines to date have been processed in organic solvents. This paper introduces a novel series of polyaniline derivatives, PanAquas, which are water soluble in the conducting form and thus, eliminate environmental concerns of organic solvents. As these materials can be easily applied and removed in water, they can be used as removable charge dissipators in a number of lithographic areas replacing metals which often need to be sputtered or plated. By incorporating cross-linkable functionality on the backbone of these derivatives , the polyanilines can be made to cure upon irradiation. The cured polymers are no longer soluble and thus can be used as permanent conducting coatings for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. They can be applied as coatings on electronic component carriers replacing metals and carbon filled materials. The cross-linkable polyanilines can also be made into water developable conducting resists.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122435025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recognizing that mankind can both destroy the environment and help protect it, it is important that the consciousness and activities of both corporations and individuals change if environmental preservation is to become more effective from now on. Furthermore, although the power of telecommunications services in monitoring environmental factors has already been demonstrated, one must realize that telecommunications can play a big part in making the movement of people and goods more efficient. One must also be aware of how the development of multimedia communications may greatly change individual lifestyles. This paper provides an overview on how various corporations and industries in Japan are tackling environmental problems, and describes how telecommunications services can contribute to solving these problems, based on services now under consideration at NTT. It also presents NTT's views on the way future telecommunications services can contribute even more to global environmental preservation, and on where priority should be placed in research and development to this end.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121090222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approach to achieve reusability of electronic modules 一种实现电子模块可重用性的方法

{"title":"An approach to achieve reusability of electronic modules","authors":"L. Until now, little profit can be expected from the recycling process. Faced with this situation, it will be of great benefit to enable the re-use of modules recovered from discarded devices. Besides obstacles like innovation pressure, a main difficulty in the realization of re-use lies in the lack of life history data of used modules. In this paper, an approach is presented to tackle this problem. First it is shown that re-use requires a modular product structure. A data storage unit called \"identification unit\" is then introduced for each module of interest in a product. Important life history data are collected and recorded in the identification unit together with information on the product and applied materials. All data are accessible through a so-called \"green port\" interface. The data stored in the identification units are structured according to their purposes and manufacturer's intention. In line with demands in the market, the data stored in identification units can be used to find out which modules still have a relatively high residual value. Through the introduction of indentification units in electronic products, necessary life history information is made available which is a prerequisite for the realization of re-use as a form of high level recycling.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133815238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
