The reason for this is that an LCA is a detailed and quantitative balance-sheet of energetics and material inputs and outputs of a carefully defined system describing a product, an activity, or a set of processes. In the case of a product Life Cycle Assessment, the system encompasses the entire \"life cycle\" of the product, from raw material extraction to the different end of life management alternatives (landfilling, incineration, recycling, reusing, etc.), including the manufacturing stages, transportation, distribution, use and waste collection. One of the most important applications of LCAs is that it highlights this pollution displacement which then in turn can be better managed and controlled. By providing an unbiased analysis of entire industrial systems, LCA has shown that the reality behind widely held beliefs regarding \"green\" issues such as reusable vs. one way products, recycling vs. incineration, \"natural\" vs. synthetic products were far more complex than expected and not as \"green\" as assumed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128081507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, HP's environmental program has expanded its focus beyond manufacturing facilities to also consider product shipment, use by the customer and eventual disposition at the end of the product's useful life. Also taken into account are the possible environmental impacts that may occur \"upstream\" with respect to HP's suppliers' manufacture of materials, parts and components used in HP's products. This new product stewardship philosophy represents a major change in perspective and is bringing attention to the fact that much, and often most, of the environmental impacts associated with products occur beyond manufacturing facilities.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127372477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, activity modeling (a part of the synergy methodology) has been developed and proven to be comprehensive and rigorous through a variety of system and process improvement applications in industry. Economics is fundamental to the success of all Eco-Enterprises. Just meeting regulations through abatement of pollution or payment of environmental fines is no longer sufficient. Environmental issues must be integrated into the very core of corporate competitive strategy and actions. The synergy methodology of focusing on the strategy systems, and processes through the comprehensive and rigorous activity modeling and product life cycle economic modeling provides a sound basis for corporations to transform strategy, systems and processes into the evolving new paradigm: The Paradigm 'E'.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128775068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper discusses an approach to the application of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on a business machine using the fabrication of a sheet steel computer housing as an example. The alternatives to be examined include surface protection treatments for the sheet steel and decorative finish options. This method allows for a quantitative accounting of significant environmental inputs and outputs (i.e. \"environmental burdens\") comprising the ecoprofile for each of the fabrication, finishing and disposal alternatives. Using ecoprofile tables produced for this and other common computer components, design engineers can quickly identify the environmental consequences of their choices and optimize the environmental performance of the products as well as the performance and reliability, safety and the cost of the machine. In principle, this ecoprofile accounting approach can be extended to include the entire computer product system, however, the complexity of a complete system LCA is daunting.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129661915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dougherty","doi":"10.1109/ISEE.1994.337285","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISEE.1994.337285","url":null,"abstract":"The International Standards Organisation (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) established the Strategic Advisory Group for the Environment (SAGE) in 1991 to develop recommendations in the area of international standards for the environment. A subsequent work group, S01, was established to develop standards for environmental management systems in 1992. The efforts of SOL have been translated into a model which provides the basis for standardization. Environmental regulations reach deep into the operations of an electronic manufacturing facility. These regulations cover the full spectrum of environmental concerns including: air emissions, water emissions, chemical inventories, process safety, accidental release, and worker exposure. Historically, industry has attempted to deploy separate and discrete software packages to satisfy environmental regulatory compliance. This approach has met with only moderate success due to the relative lack of integration with the manufacturing and business processes. The goal of this paper is to identify and develop a logical data model to support an environmental management system for an electronic manufacturer developed around the ISO guidelines. This environmental management data model can then provide the foundation for deploying information technology integrated in the manufacturing environment.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":434669,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1994 IEEE International Symposium on Electronics and The Environment","volume":"335 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123399053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To define such rules the producers of electric devices must try to determine the trends. This requires co-operation with technologists, raw material suppliers, and authorities.
