Grounded in the canon of Byzantine\u0000 liturgical poetry and dedicated to cult practice, hymnography often did not\u0000 conform to modern poetic principles, originality, and metrical form.\u0000 Formalist approaches to poetry shaped the anthologies of Serbian medieval\u0000 literature published in Yugoslavia in the 1960s. The editors transformed\u0000 sequences from narrative prose into poetic texts, thus creating medieval\u0000 poems. These cases draw attention to the importance of textual criticism and\u0000 the social context in defining medieval literary genres. Exploring\u0000 hymnography as a linguistic and liturgical event - a poem sung to an engaged\u0000 audience - introduces new perspectives on its interpretation.

Thus, a pig is most often\u0000 sacrificed on Christmas, on St. George?s Day - a lamb, on St. Elijah - a\u0000 rooster, on St. Mrata - chicken, etc. The ritual slaughter of a certain\u0000 animal, which is carried out by the wider community on a certain day of the\u0000 year, in the Bulgarian-Macedonian-Serbian area is known as kurban. The\u0000 paper discusses which animal species are sacrificed on a particular holiday\u0000 in the annual calendar. Regional variations or parallels were also observed\u0000 (cases of sacrificing the same species on different holidays). Attention was\u0000 paid to the way the animal was treated before the act of sacrifice, then the\u0000 rite of sacrifice itself was analyzed (who performs it, in what place, at\u0000 what time, in what way), as well as its purpose. Also, later procedures with\u0000 the sacrificed animal were analyzed and the role that is given to certain\u0000 parts of the animal?s body (head, shoulder, bones, feathers, legs) in folk\u0000 beliefs, and especially their usage in magical practice. The correspondence includes many answers given by writer to translators about semantics and etymology of language use in his books. The story about\u0000 Emperor Asa, the third king of the Kingdom of Judah (2 Chronicles 14-16), is\u0000 preserved in only one Serbian-Slavonic manuscript from the end of the 16th\u0000 century (now in The Patriarchal Library of the Serbian Orthodox Church, No.\u0000 167). Its main motif is the atonement of sin (Emperor?s deletion of three\u0000 verses written by a woman from the holy books). In three days of punishment\u0000 he will find himself in the alternative reality (of the dream), on a rubbish\u0000 dump, dressed in rags, uncertain who he actually is.
