A gradual diminishing pattern has been observed in percentage of agricultural workers to the total workforce in the country and it is projected to reach 25.7% by 2050 creating a critical shortage of farm labour. This paper is intended to understand the dynamic changes in the labour utilization, farm mechanisation and labour productivity across the States in cotton farming during the years 2007 to 2019 by using cost of cultivation scheme data. Eleven major cotton growing States have been selected for the study. The data on cost of cultivation scheme of Government of India was used to calculate the changes in crop profitability, labour use, labour costs and labour productivity indices. In spite of increased growth in wage rate, the labour productivity growth is not that significant in most of the States. Selective mechanization wherein the labour shortage is crucial affecting the crop productivity should be identified and given impetus.","PeriodicalId":427773,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics & Sociology","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122883050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study aimed to understand how farmers leveraged digital tools to overcome marketing difficulties in marketing their produce during the lockdown period. The research focused on the time spent on digital tools, the purpose for which farmers used digital tools, and the awareness of e-commerce web portals for marketing their produce. The research was conducted in three districts of Tamil Nadu, viz., Krishnagiri, Erode, and Madurai, which were selected based on highest production of tomatoes, banana, and jasmine respectively. The findings revealed that the time spent by farmers on phone calls increased for marketing their produce during Covid-19 lockdown period, followed by SMS/WhatsApp/Telegram messaging to engage in direct communication and share information with buyers. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, Digital payment platforms like Phonepe, Gpay, Bhim and E-commerce portals and apps were not used much by farmers for marketing their produce during the lockdown period. Most of the farmers used digital tools for getting market information, arranging transport and labour. However, farmers didn’t use the digital tools for processing and storage purposes., The awareness on E-commerce web portals among the farmers differed among the three crops. None of them were aware about the portals like Jaivik Kheti, Kisan Mandi, and Arya.ag. However, farmers had relatively higher awareness on e-NAM portal. These findings have implications for policy makers and stakeholders in devising strategies to enhance farmers' awareness and access to digital tools and to develop digital interventions for improving their marketing capabilities in times of crisis.","PeriodicalId":427773,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics & Sociology","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131916630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The arecanut farmers are facing a lack of training on arecanut practices, the improper post-harvest practices deteriorate the quality of nuts that cause the nuts to fetch lower price in the market. They are also not aware of the opportunities for value added arecanut. The knowledge level of post- harvest practices of arecanut is lacking among arecanut growers. The arecanut farmers sell the raw nuts to the pre-harvest contractors without knowing the opportunities available in arecanut value addition. The contractors in turn they carry out the value addition and sold in the market. The price of the nut is mainly decided by its quality which correlates to post-harvest practices and value addition that plays a major role in arecanut value.The study investigated the challenges encountered by arecanut farmers in adopting value addition technology.The datas were collected among arecanut farmers related to the challenges they face in adopting value addition technology. The ex-post facto research design was employed; several kinds of constraints were gathered through a literature study and expert opinion. They were given in an interview schedule for the farmers to rank accordingly. The acquired data were analyzed, and ranks were assigned based on Rank-Based Quotient percentage.The major challenges faced by the arecanut farmers were Lack of credit (85%), Inadequate knowledge of value addition technology (82.5%), No re-training facilities (81.675), Lack of equipment/facilities (78.33%), Lack of market (74.17%) and Contacting extension agents (56.67%).By overcoming these limitations, arecanut farmers can adopt value addition technology, leading to profit.","PeriodicalId":427773,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension, Economics & Sociology","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131673679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
