Rendered in brown ink and highly legible handwriting consistent with the eighteenth century, these anonymous annotations provide a brief, but valuable, perspective on all three phases of the Lisbon disaster: the earthquake, the tsunami, and the subsequent fire. Este artigo oferece uma tradução e um comentário sobre um testemunho, até hoje desconhecido, do grande terramoto de Lisboa de 1755 que foi escrito nas margens de um exemplar da Historia Universal dos Terremotos (1758) de Joaquim José Moreira de Mendonça conservado na New York Public Library. Escrito com uma tinta castanha e numa letra bem legível e datável do século dezoito, estas anotações oferecem uma perspectiva breve, mas valiosa, das três fases do desastre de Lisboa: o terramoto, o tsunami, e o fogo.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"26 1","pages":"232 - 248"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41616120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While also looking back to the 1980s, the central focus of the article is on the public policies on development adopted by different governments over the last twenty years. It shows how these policies increasingly affected the lives of the indigenous peoples, taking strategic advantage of a weakening of the existing legislation in the country and a disregard for international guarantees, won over several decades of political struggle. The article analyses the harmful effects of these public policies, which have reached their apex in the present policy of death claimed and applied by the government of Jair Bolsonaro. Finally, the article demonstrates how the indigenous movement not only confronts, but reinvents forms of resistance to this catastrophic scenario.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"37 1","pages":"102 - 119"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70912761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is difficult to explain why the critical and editorial fortune of Fernando Pessoa in English-speaking countries has been so slow and intermittent, when in so many European and South-American countries he was quickly recognized as one of the major creative writers of the twentieth century. Owing to the absence of translations Pessoa was for many years a 'best-kept secret' in British and American literary circles. Since the publication in 1991 of the first of the English language translations of The Book of Disquiet his editorial and critical fortune has been rising steadily, especially in the United States. Este ensaio pretende dar uma visão cronológica da fortuna crítica e editorial de Fernando Pessoa em países de língua inglesa. É difícil explicar por que razão, no Reino Unido e nos Estados Unidos da América, o seu reconhecimento como um dos maiores criadores literários do século vinte foi tao lento e intermitente, ao contrário do que aconteceu na generalidade dos países europeus ou sul-americanos. Devido à escassez de traduções, Pessoa foi durante muitos anos um 'best-kept secret' em circulos literarios britanicos e norte-americanos. Desde a publicação, em 1991, das primeiras traduções do Livro do Desassossego, a sua fortuna crítica e editorial tern vindo a crescer, especialmente nos Estados Unidos.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"24 1","pages":"13 - 32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66301322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fernando Pessoa described Alberto Caeiro as his teacher, despite the fact that Caeiro was a poetic creation. This article studies the construction of that teacher, from a diachronic approach. Rather than a rounded and defined figure, Caeiro is presented as an author who became more and more real, up until and after his fictitious death, in 1915, and indeed was still being constructed in 1935, the year in which Pessoa himself died. It also aims to explain how it was only in 2008 that Caeiro's genetic dossier became much more complete and to stress the fact that the Caeiro revealed by Pessoa in 1925, in Athena magazine, actually hides aspects of his heteronym.KEYWORDS. Both authors - award-winning contemporary Brazilian novelists, marked by Jewish roots, and connected to different spatialities during their lives - are concerned with time and space movements alongside identity and memory within their literary experimentation processes. Thus, this paper analyses the dialogue between these selected works regarding space and time representation in order to understand their connections to the construction of identity. As a theoretical basis, Mikhail Bakhtin's, Gilles Deleuze's, and Zigmunt Bauman's thoughts on time and space are revisited. Space-time imagination has achieved worldwide coverage in contemporary Brazilian fiction: writers have constantly explored themes like transnational movements, migration and exile, representing transits all over the world and across national geographies. Therefore, examining Brazilian literature of the last decades has been a way of analysing new global cartographies through varied imagined peoples and identities.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"31 1","pages":"107 - 123"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5699/PORTSTUDIES.31.1.0107","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42855277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Oscar Wilde, Fernando Pessoa, and the Art of Lying","authors":"Mariana DE CASTRO","doi":"10.1353/port.2006.0004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/port.2006.0004","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:Fernando Pessoa was clearly fascinated, if not openly obsessed, by Oscar Wilde. His espólio contains at least thirty-seven manuscript fragments on the aesthete, including comparative horoscopes for himself and Wilde. Seven books either written by Wilde or directly connected to the Wilde story can be found in Pessoa's personal library, and his extensive marginalia reveals an attentive reading of the texts. Much of Pessoa's writing, including some of his best-known poems, are clearly influenced by his predecessor's artistic ideals. This article demonstrates that, far from this influence being a mere consequence of the wider influence Wilde enjoyed over the Modernist generation as a whole, in the case of Pessoa — particularly in the context of lying in art — it is both traceable and direct. It outlines the main points of contact between the two writers, and goes on to examine the psychological reasons behind Pessoa's urgent efforts to forge a greater distance between himself and Wilde than in reality exists. Pessoa everywhere attempts to escape the anxiety of Wilde's influence by claiming that the aesthete was nowhere a model, despite quite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. É evidente que Fernando Pessoa se sentia fascinado — se não mesmo obcecado — pela figura de Oscar Wilde. No seu espólio existem pelo menos trinta e sete fragmentos manuscritos sobre Wilde, incluindo dois horóscopos comparados de ambos. Na biblioteca de Pessoa figuram sete livros escritos por Wilde ou relacionados com a sua história, todos eles profusamente anotados pelo Poeta, provando uma leitura minuciosa e atenta. Muitos textos de Fernando Pessoa, incluindo alguns dos seus poemas mais conhecidos, reflectem claramente a influência das teorias estéticas de Oscar Wilde. Este artigo começa por demonstrar que, para além da influência genérica que Wilde exerceu sobre a geração Modernista, no caso de Pessoa tal influência é detectável e directa, especialmente no que se refere ao conceito de fingimento em arte. Demonstram-se os principais pontos de contacto entre os dois escritores, e estudam-se, a seguir, as razões que podem ter levado Pessoa a procurar distanciar-se de Wilde nos seus escritos. Esforçando-se continuamente por se libertar da influência de Wilde, Pessoa proclama que o Esteta nunca foi para ele um modelo — mas todas as provas que nos deixou nos seus escritos apontam em sentido contrário.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"91 2","pages":"219 - 249"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41273113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
