However, the fact that the liceu provided a post-primary education that was voluntary, with admission exams, restricted places, and high fees, made it particularly selective with respect to the social background of pupils. The present study analyses the educational market for liceu education at two different levels, the national and the case-specific. The case study deals with the continuous process of selection, the predominance of a highly academic curriculum, the examination results of pupils, and their drop-out rate, at the Liceu Rodrigues de Freitas/D. The first, directed by Carlos Avilez at the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II in Lisbon in 1995, is seen as an example of heritage theatre built upon aesthetic formalism. However, the usual critical association of such performances with political conservatism is challenged. The second, directed by Nuno Cardoso at the Dona Maria and also at Porto's Teatro Carlos Alberto in 2007, is seen as a postmodern form of 'resistant' performance which focuses attention on the politics of male power through ludic parody. O artigo confronta visões correntes sobre a ausência de intervenção política nas encenações teatrais dos anos de 1990 e 2000 através da análise das produções de Ricardo II de Shakespeare nos teatros nacionais portugueses. A primeira encenação, dirigida por Carlos Avilez no Teatro Nacional D. Maria II em Lisboa em 1995, é vista como um exemplo de 'heritage theatre' e formalismo estético. Contudo, a usual associação crítica deste tipo de produção com conservadorismo político é contestada pela autora. It is the author's contention that the career diplomat became persona non grata in Berlin because of his behaviour and declarations, his known anti-Nazism and anti-Salazarism, as well as intrigues on the part of the head of the German legation in Lisbon, Hoyningen-Huene, and a number of Portuguese pro-Salazar newspaper editors who visited Berlin. Although literacy was then rapidly increasing, the status of poetry was challenged by the new media, such as film, that drew mass audiences. Responding to this challenge, Concrete Poetry did not retreat into a Classical revival, but aimed at a style of verse rooted in the realities of modern technology, and capable of being popular. It thus claimed to be true not only to its time, but also to its literary heritage — a heritage that was in fact validated rather than betrayed by its modernity. Aproveitando-se de textos dos seus praticantes mais marcantes, tais como João Cabral de Melo Neto, este artigo examina o aparecimento da Poesia Concreta no Brasil do pós-guerra. Apesar de uma forte subida na taxa de alfabetismo, a situação da poesia foi posta em causa pelas novas formas de comunicação, exemplificadas pelo cinema, que chegavam a uma audiência de massa. Respondendo ao desafio, a Poesia Concreta não optou por uma ressurgência clássica, mas antes esboçou um estilo de poesia radicado nas realidades da tecnologia moderna, com capacidade de captar as massas. The aim of the article is to give an overview of the text, concentrating on aspects that characterize it as a novel that simultaneously courts death and defies it, by annulling the divide between past and present, thus replicating the gesture of the pair of lovers at the centre of its story who see themselves as doubles of Dante and Beatrice.
