Though the serto remains inextricably bound to Brazilian culture, this article seeks to demonstrate the Portuguese roots of the serto, especially as manifest in Portuguese cartography from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The cartographic history of the serto deepens our understanding of Portugal' cartographic imagination, colonial expansion, exploration of Brazil' vast interior, and encounters with indigenous peoples.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"30 1","pages":"20 - 5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48777146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it also affects the historiography of systems that are more established, over longer periods of time, such as the Portuguese. This case presents problems in relation to neighbouring systems (such as the Spanish), as well as the literary emergences and developments in Brazil and the countries of Portuguese-speaking Africa. Also affected is Galician literary production, which interferes directly in the establishing of a foundation period for Portuguese literature in histories on the subject. The instability and the lack of coherence in these historiographical productions reveal the need to find new historiographical approaches (in consideration of systems and of heritage) and demonstrate the inviability of a ‘grand narrative in Portuguese, or other, literature.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"28 1","pages":"31 - 5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46918090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Heteronym António Mora as Moment of Nietzsche's Reception by Pessoa","authors":"Mattia Riccardi","doi":"10.1353/port.2007.0011","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/port.2007.0011","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:While no books by Nietzsche were found in his library, there is evidence that Fernando Pessoa was strongly influenced, positively and negatively, by secondary readings of his work. Pessoa's minor heteronym, António Mora, appears to be modelled on a popular conception of Nietzsche, and follows earlier heteronyms in rejecting Christianity as being against nature, and favouring instead classical paganism. However, Mora differs from some other commentators at the time of the First World War in identifying Prussian militarism as in a direct line of descent from Nietzsche. This article argues that although influenced by Nietzsche, Pessoa had a limited understanding of his philosophy, seeing only the wild Dionysian side, untamed by the more optimistic Apollonian reading of humanity. Apesar da ausência de obras de Nietzsche na biblioteca de Fernando Pessoa, existem indícios de uma forte influência, tanto positiva como negativa, através de leituras de segunda mão. O seu heterónimo menor, António Mora, parece moldado por uma concepção popular de Nietzsche, seguindo os heterónimos anteriores ao favorecer um paganismo clássico em detrimento do cristianismo, visto como anti-natural. Contudo, Mora afasta-se de vários críticos da época da I Guerra Mundial, identificando o militarismo prussiano justamente com o pensamento nietzschiano. Este artigo argumenta que, embora influenciado por Nietzsche, Pessoa tinha uma compreensão limitada da sua filosofia, restrita ao lado dionisíaco e desenfreado da vida, alheia à visão apolínea e optimista da humanidade.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"23 1","pages":"109 - 123"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47003330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pessoa and Beckett as Case Studies","authors":"Aino Rinhaug","doi":"10.1353/port.2008.0014","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/port.2008.0014","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:The present article examines the notion of the absurd as it transpires in the form of Modernist literature; more specifically, in the works of Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) and Samuel Beckett (1906-1989). On the basis of how these authors responded to a sense of existential disquiet, experienced as the absurd, an examination of the latter as a particular terrain proposes that the bewildered self sought a refuge in literature from a sensation of nothingness. The idea of literature as a territory of signification is, moreover, analogous to that of an inner, psychological terrain where the creation of an identity originates and where the question of a male-female difference might possibly be obliterated. O presente artigo pretende investigar a noção do absurdo, como é visível na forma de literatura modernista, mais especificamente, nas obras de Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935) e Samuel Beckett (1906-1989). Baseada na maneira como os autores responderam a uma sensação de desassossego, visto como o absurdo, a investigação deste como se fosse um terreno propõe que o eu desorientado procura um refúgio na literatura, escapando assim à sensação do nada. A ideia da literatura como um espaço de significação é, além disso, análoga à de um terreno psicológico, interior, de onde a criação da identidade se origina e onde a questão da diferença entre o masculino e o feminino, talvez, se anule.","PeriodicalId":42713,"journal":{"name":"PORTUGUESE STUDIES","volume":"24 1","pages":"41 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47020852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
