Ann Jaderlund’s poems for children in relation to her poems for adults.’’ In the discussion of the renowned Swedish poet Ann Jaderlund (b. 1955), her two illustrated books of poetry for children have been widely neglected. In this essay, it is argued that these two books, Ivan’s book ( Ivans bok , 1987) and Iris’s book ( Iris bok , 2002), have a bearing on her poems for adults, and that they should be closely examined by anyone who seeks to understand the poetic practice of Ann Jaderlund. Here, the poetry collection Calendar red. Living of ice ( Kalender rod . Levande av is , 2000) is tentatively read in relation to Iris’s book , which was published two years after the former. The essay draws special attention to the literary debut of Ann Jaderlund, Streamer City ( Vimpelstaden , 1985), which is a minimalistic and language-reflective poetry collection for adults, published two years before the author’s first children’s book. In Streamer City the subject imitates the perception of a small child, striving to renew or liquify the given concepts, and to create a voice of her own. This perspective is central in Ivan’s book and Iris’s book as well, but from a child’s actual point of view, where the objects are not yet caught in concepts. Here, we analyse poems from the four mentioned poetry collections, focusing on how the subjects describe the world in relation to the normative connection between objects and concepts. We reveal how the poet uses the same images and a similar linguistic theme in these works, especially in Streamer City and Ivan’s book , which creates an interesting bridge between the two poetry collections. We advocate an open perspective concerning target groups, and note how the child’s perspective can be regarded as an optics, through wich we may bring our formation of concepts to light. Focusing on Brother in the Land by Robert Swindells, Nuclear War Diary by James E. Sanford (Jr), The Last Children by Gudrun Pausewang, The Carbon Diaries 2015 by Saci Lloyd and its sequel, The Carbon Diaries 2017 , and Days Like This by Alison Stewart, the paper argues that in post-nuclear texts for young adults the emphasis tends to be on the perceived responsibility of the young adult reader’s generation to work towards preventing the disaster from becoming reality, rather than on the guilt of the adult generation that caused the disaster. However, in texts dealing with environmental disaster, the young adult reader’s generation can be seen to have some measure of culpability, and so the issues of guilt and responsibility become more complex. After some ten years of cataloguing, the archives are now open for research. The archives consist of some 75 000 letters to the author from readers, colleagues, publishers, translators, film and theatre producers, children and many others all over the world; a thousand copies of letters written by her; 600 manuscripts to books, plays, films and essays; 100 000 newspaper; clippings; royalties; photos; shorthand notes etc. , in all more than 140 shelf metres of documents (see www.ediffah.org and search ”Astrid Lindgrens arkiv” for a list of contents). Short hand notes and correspondence require special permission from Astrid Lindgren’s estate, www.saltkrakan.se ; info@saltkrakan.se . The material in the archives should be of interest not only for researches of juvenile literature but also research into art and language education, film and drama, sociology, economics, translation and many other subjects and open up new fields of research on the author’s work. The archives also mirror the fact that Lindgren played an important role in public debate on different subjects such as child care and child abuse, nuclear power and the treatment of farm animals. The archives were included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2005.","PeriodicalId":426234,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Children’s Literature","volume":"293 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127559255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article I outline the roots of boy humour in children’s literature. In Swedish tradition this category is intimately associated with the genre “tjuvpojksboken”(stories about young rascals). I argue that one important condition for the development of a humour of this kind, are the concept of the boy as a gentle savage, a central character in boyology. A discourse comprising descriptive and prescriptive writing on boyhood across a variety of genres. In Making American Boy s (2004) Kenneth B. Kidd shows how the boyologists of the early twentieth century reworked themes and tropes they picked up from the American Boy Book (like Aldrich, Twain, and Tarkington); foremost the idea of the wildness of boys as a necessary step in becoming a man. Another important condition for boy humour is that the stories are told from the boy’s perspective, which in turn makes way for different boy’s discourses, such as “slanguage”. After examining the issue from a historical point-of-view, I turn to Anders Jacobsson’s and Soren Olsson’s popular books about the boy Bert (23 books between 1987–2010), with focus on the first title Berts dagbok [ Bert’s diary ]. Here I concentrate on three characteristic features: the carnivalesque degrading of the adult world, the grotesque realism (the world interpreted through the boy’s bodily experience), and play on words, such as rhymes, puns, jokes and deliberately misreading of foreign and difficult words. My point is that the readers (boys) through channels like this, learn the humorous discourse and that it creates intimate bonds between the narrator and the readers.
