Its authors explicitly investigate the experiences of very young children as they gain awareness of and access to printed forms of communication. But in the process, it also reveals that scholars in children’s literature and human development are constantly finding new layers, forms, and even ways of describing the process of decoding meaning in the physical world and/or social interactions. These essays repeatedly represent children struggling to master categories of description and representation, including those of language, while the authors resist the taxonomic limits arising from prior studies’ assumptions and conclusions about what emerging literacy practices look like, and when children become capable of them. They should find a ready audience under the umbrella of childhood studies. Moreover, a strong tendency toward reflexivity helps this collection reposition literacy as a ‘‘keyword’’ in a wide range of disciplinary discussions, in continuation of the project initiated by Raymond Williams in","PeriodicalId":426234,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Children’s Literature","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129634588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His first attempts in the genre consisted of stray sf elements in some of his aviation novels on ‘‘Flygkamraterna’’ (‘‘The Flight Comrades’’, 1947-1957), and the fullblown sf novel Flygkamraterna korsar rymden (‘‘The Flight Comrades Cross Space’’, 1949), which depicts a trip to Mars and an encounter with an alien civilisation literally divided into different strata in their underground society. This study examines the transition from Wernstrom’s first aviation novels to his first sf novel, and studies the extent to which Wernstrom’s early science fiction makes use of the specific conventions of the genre. After a very brief survey of the history of sf in Sweden up until the 1950s, this study deals with the two novels Flygkamraterna (‘‘The Flight Comrades’’, 1947) and Flygkamraterna korsar rymden  when it comes to their view on science and technology, their uses of technological speculation and futurological extrapolation, estrangement, and evocation of the sublime. It is commonly believed that Wernstrom’s writing didn’t really become political until the 1960s. One of the main conclusions of this study, however, is that already in his earliest science fiction from the late 1940s, Wernstrom makes ample use of the genre’s potential to conduct indirect social commentary. The book series as well as the Danish animated televisions series used a noticeable class perspective in order to make comparisons between the condition of slaves in medieval times and Swedish working class of the 19th and 20th centuries. In accordance with the novels, the television series therefore displays a strong moral historical perspective. The analysis in the article focuses mainly on the abundant use of violence and sex as political and pedagogical instruments to promote class consciousness among its child viewers. In contrast to the novels, the television series was able to create more explicit audiovisual images of violence and sex that, in fact, were censored by Swedish state television before it was aired on a child friendly timeslot. Although some scenes in the television series were censored, the final analysis reveals that ‘‘The Thralls’’ can be seen as a rather typical example of the politically and aesthetically radical Swedish children’s culture of the 1970’s. The Narrative of the Nation in Sven Wernstrom’s Den underbara resan . Sven Wernstrom’s Den underbara resan (‘‘The Wonderful Journey’’) describes a modern Sweden by following in the trail of Selma Lagerlof’s classic The Wonderful Adventures of Nils . This article analyzes Wernstrom’s depiction of Sweden and its people. By incorporating The Wonderful Adventures of Nils , the author foregrounds the notion of nation as narrative by stressing the subjectivity of the text and processes of creation. Rather than subscribing to Lagerof’s vision of unity, Wernstrom describes a Sweden divided by class conflict. Being a true Swede is defined through economic disinterestedness and love of nature. Den underbara resan describes the creation of a model citizen through the bildung of the protagonist. However, the ideal citizen is not depicted as a loyal subject but as an independent person willing to critize people in power and protest against injustice. {"title":"Guilt, Empathy and the Ethical Potential of Children's Literature","authors":"Maria Nikolajeva","doi":"10.14811/CLR.V35I0.139","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14811/CLR.V35I0.139","url":null,"abstract":"The paper takes as its point of departure cognitive criticism, the direction of inquiry that investigates readers’ cognitive and affective engagement with literature, partly based on recent brain research. It argues that for young readers who may not yet have developed full comprehension of fundamental moral issues and who have not attained the literary competence necessary to understand fictive characters’ mental processes, representation of emotions in literature may produce a problem. Since guilt is a complex social emotion, involving a reconciliation of several contradictory goals, such representation demands well-developed empathy and advanced mind-reading skills, as well as factual knowledge of relevant legislation and understanding of moral implications of crime, guild and remorse. The paper examines these issues through a reading of two texts for young audience, Forbidden (2010), by Tabitha Suzuma, and His Dark Materials trilogy (1995-2000), by Philip Pullman. The former is totally focused on guilt, in legal as well as moral sense, experienced by two siblings who enter an incestuous relationship. In the latter, guilt is less conspicuous, yet proves on closer consideration to be a major plot engine in the protagonist Lyra’s physical and spiritual quest. While Suzuma’s novel has an overt educational agenda, it is ambiguous in supporting young readers’ ethical position towards the protagonists’ guilt. In Pullman’s trilogy, guilt becomes closely connected with the fundamental philosophical issues of determinism and free will. Although Pullman does not provide any clear-cut ethical guidance either, the use of emotion discourse, or emotion ekphrasis, is more subtle, not least because the genre allows a outward projection of emotions in the form of daemons. Lyra’s guilt becomes a driving engine in her maturation process. The ultimate argument of the paper is that literature provides an excellent training field for young readers’ developing of empathy skills, and the vicarious experience of guilt exposes readers to a wide range of ethical questions.
