Globalization has brought with it a shift in the way we view our cities, from traditional urban forms that consider the wisdom and skills of our ancestors to analytical diagrams largely used to facilitate urban development. While this has resulted in a more efficient and convenient urban environment, it has also led to an insensitive and unresponsive urban fabric. Fortunately, there are examples of urban forms that have managed to preserve their significance over a long period of time, while still being adapted to the changing cultural and socio – economic contexts. These examples prove that it is possible to create places that are both timeless and responsive to the needs of the present and serve as inspirations for cities of the future. The purpose of this research study is to examine the role of design in shaping the continuity and change of urban fabric. Specifically, this paper investigates the relationship between contextual factors and design decisions that contribute to the evolution of the built environment in urban areas set in unique contexts. Within this framework, this paper aims to intricately compare and contrast Rome and Bhutan as distinctive urban environments, each situated within its own unique settings. This research study has used an approach that combines analysis of development processes, observation notes, documentary reports, published literature, and studies of case examples to investigate the relationship between design decisions and the continual change in the urban fabric. This factor, in particular underpins the relationship between the built environment and socio-cultural expressions that inform contextually appropriate design. A tool (weighted index matrix) for deciphering the interconnectedness between socio-cultural expressions, urban settings, and built environments was developed as a result of the research study. Further, the matrix index has been applied for the two select case examples and the results have been evaluated and analyzed.","PeriodicalId":425253,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"8 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138971742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly, the interpretation of architecture involves analyzing the meaning behind a building's design, style, and construction. The architecture was essentially practical in ancient times, offering shelter and security for individuals and communities. As cultures got more complicated, though, architecture became increasingly intricate and symbolic. Gothic architecture, for example, arose throughout the medieval period as a representation of Europe's spiritual beliefs.Architecture has evolved to reflect shifting ideals and views in the contemporary period. The Industrial Revolution resulted in the development of new materials and construction processes, which resulted in the rise of new architectural styles such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. In architecture, the twentieth century saw a trend towards functionalism and minimalism, with architects like Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe arguing for a machine aesthetic. The aim of this study is to explore the interpretation of art and architecture, focusing on the subjective nature of interpretation and how it is dependent on the viewer's understanding and cultural context. The objective is to analyze examples of famous architects and buildings, such as Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, Zaha Hadid's Guangzhou Opera House, and Le Corbusier's Villa Savoye, to illustrate the different forms and styles of architecture and the various interpretations that they can elicit. By examining these examples, this study aims to provide insights into the ways in which architecture can reflect cultural, social, and political values, as well as the personal beliefs of the architect.","PeriodicalId":425253,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"9 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138971192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But adding color to black-and-white films so that they appear realistic to the majority of human observers was a significant challenge for the film industry in the 1980s, as it was a very difficult and time-consuming process. However, with the advancement of artificial intelligence and technical developments, the process of colorization has improved, which makes it possible to turn black-and-white films into vivid experiences in a matter of hours. Colorization performs by transferring out the luminance or scalar value, stored in each pixel of a B&W image to a three-dimensional color space.The objective of this research is to assess the reception of colorized versions of iconic black-and-white Bollywood films by contemporary audiences, particularly the younger generation. By employing a mixed methods approach that combines both qualitative and quantitative techniques, we explore whether the introduction of color through digital technology and recent artificial intelligence motivates the new generation to engage with these venerable classics.As case studies, five well-known Bollywood movies from various genres—Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Shree 420 (1955), Naya Daur (1957), Kala Pani (1958), and Dil Tera Deewana (1983)—were chosen. Short video montages featuring scenes from both the colorized and original black-and-white versions of these films were presented to undergraduate and postgraduate students at a university. Nonprobability purposive sampling was used to acquire the data, and a mixed-methods strategy was used to analyze it. The results show that colorization has a substantial effect on younger viewers, who have a greater desire to see these movies in color. This study highlights the evolving importance of colorization in preserving classic cinema and reviving its appeal to modern audiences. Although not devoid of controversies, the process of colorization has emerged as a means to bridge the generational gap in the appreciation of cinematic legacy.","PeriodicalId":425253,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":" 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138612141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
