Despite having a glorious past, this ancient craft is now known for its dire situation and for slowly fading into obscurity as the industry struggles to survive due to numerous issues. The main causes of this include a large number of substituted products, insufficient training for skill upgrades, an unorganized structure, low wages, the reluctance of the younger generation to choose weaving as a means of subsistence, a small domestic market, the lack of creative designs and color combinations, fierce competition from power looms, the fast-fashion industry, poor marketing, shifting consumer preferences, and the availability of alternative employment opportunities. However, the handloom industry can still be revitalized as evidenced by the tenacity that handloom weavers continue to display in terms of survival and capacity for innovation. In order to contribute to the sustainability of traditional craft heritage and ensure continuous transmission of craft skills and knowledge from generation to generation, the current investigation aims to explore, identify, and address issues faced by traditional craftsmanship. The dancing body is now no longer a simple reproduction of historically created style of human movement that seem to continue forever as symbol of people’s tradition and culture. The dancer’s body is now read as sign, as discourse, as platform for human experience and the structure and formulations of movements in time in the body do inform particular thoughts, ideas, emotions and affects that were involved in the creation of a language of dance. By analyzing the kind of dance produced in creative people’s history, we shall be able to provide hints on the structure of power, knowledge and the world views of the society of the times. No doubt technology, utilization of resources, spiritual and religious influences and power exercise do impact on social and cultural change. But the kind of dance style also do inform on the very nature of the creative inputs of society that had been necessitated in the production of the dance. Reading dance can also be as pleasurable as reading literature.We shall study the pre – Haraoba, the Lai Haraoba dance and its transformation into the 18 th century classical dance of the Raas Leela during the conversion of the Manipuris into Hinduism. The introduction of colonial money economy and structural changes in the society and culture and its impact on dance shall be explored. Globalization and its impact on dance traditions shall also be indicated. As we go deeper into the semantic field in the structure and form of dance, operas and performance in different stages of history, we are able to discover the manifold transformation in the realm of peoples’ and rulers’ ideas on life, relationships and processes in response to the challenges of the time. The challenges no doubt come sometimes from outside of the realm in which the people thrive. Foreign conquests and introduction of new ways of life and action also impinges on the traditional equilibrium in society. There are times of turmoil and unease. Livelihood and art are in moments of crisis. But the response to the crises is unique, as the culture of the time indicates the resilience of that society in culture. Manipuri dance history relates this experience.","PeriodicalId":425253,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"10 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139613902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their engagement goes beyond just viewing or creating content. Since 230.25 million people use short videos, India is the biggest market for Instagram reels. Even after social activists, parents, and researchers point out a number of drawbacks, 54% of young people in India do not want to stop using social media, according to Pew Research (2012). The engagement ratio has also gone up to 800 likes on average (Daniel Ruby, 2022). In January 2022, India had 17.8% of its population using Instagram, among which the most frequent users were aged between 18 and 24. The use of social media reels among the Gen Z category has gone up. Hence, the present study tries to address the following objectives using a mixed-methods approach: a survey using a structured online questionnaire and a focus group discussion among students. The findings of the study would help media outlets market their news content to a wider audience on one side and develop the habit of consuming news among the Gen Z audience.","PeriodicalId":425253,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"31 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139530707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study highlights the continuing capacity of art to transcend chronological and geographical barriers by examining how both Victorian photocollages and contemporary Indian art use hybridity to express complicated notions about identity, social institutions, and cultural exchange. It also highlights the artists' ability to draw inspiration from the past, resulting in innovative works that engage in cross-cultural dialogue, ultimately demonstrating the universal nature of artistic expression and its profound impact on understanding the complexities of human existence across diverse cultural and historical contexts.Review of LiteratureTo begin, researchers like Linda Nochlin and Griselda Pollock have investigated the topic of hybridity in art, emphasising its importance in subverting conventional concepts of representation. In her important essay \"The Imaginary Orient,\" Nochlin discusses how Victorian-era art frequently included hybrid characters to address concerns of cultural identity and colonialism. This point of view lays a solid foundation for understanding the circumstances in which Victorian-era photocollages evolved as a medium for creative expression.Scholars like Geeta Kapur and Partha Mitter have explored the evolution of Indian art in the post-colonial era, highlighting the use of hybridity as a tool for artists to neg","PeriodicalId":425253,"journal":{"name":"ShodhKosh: Journal of Visual and Performing Arts","volume":"3 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138955575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Architectural heritage is the symbol of our cultural identities, acting as remnants from the past. Respect and values of the architecture heritage affect the identity and vision of the culture. The existence of architecture is defined in both time and space, therefore the need for historical monuments to be adapted and reused suited for current time while satisfying the historical context and cultural values, is the present-day demand to bring people together who are otherwise separated by certain boundaries. With the current technological advancement, the 21st century skyline places focus on glass and metal facades that lack personality, hence there is a need for more effort to conserve and readapt heritage sites that stem from our cultures and our values. The purpose of the study is to create awareness towards a more sustainable approach for heritage conservation by adaptive reuse and understand the influence it has on the various sectors of a society and its residents.
