Designed as a survey, the quantitative method was used in the study. The research sample consisted of faculty members working at ten public universities. The data were collected via two scales named “Scale of Academic Title Perception” and “Scale of Academics’ Job Stress”. The obtained data were analyzed by frequency and percentage values, t-test, ANOVA, correlation and regression analysis. A significant difference was found in terms of faculty members’ titles and subject areas and perceptions of the faculty members were differentiated by components of the Scale of Academic Title Perception. Likewise, there was a significant difference between faculty members’ perceptions regarding their job stress levels and their academic titles, seniorities and genders. Moreover, there was a significant negative correlation between the academic title perceptions of the faculty members and their levels of job stress. The results indicate that the faculty members’ perceptions of academic titles and the components of the titles are a significant predictor of the level of job stress and there is a significant negative correlation between them. Some suggestions are made to take measures that will positively affect the academic title perceptions of faculty members and reduce their job stress.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48857662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By applying the document analysis method, the changes in the law of universities, higher education laws, regulations for academic staff promotion and appointment, published in the Official Gazette since 1933, were examined. A total of twenty-two laws and regulations and the related changes were examined, which revealed that the highest number of changes were made in the titles and appointments of associate professors and professors (totally forty-eight) in the law of universities and higher education law. Nineteen changes were made regarding academic titles in the academic promotion and appointment regulations. To conclude, despite its long-established structure, Turkish higher education has made many significant and frequent changes to its academic title awarding and appointment procedures, primarily due to sociopolitical reasons.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46690745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on the experiences of immigrant students coming to Türkiye for their higher education. These experiences were structured by the dimensions of identity, belonging, citizenship, and harmony. 40 university students coming to Isparta and Bursa from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and European countries were included in the study. 26 of these participants are women and 14 of them are men. They were asked questions about identity, belonging, citizenship, and social participation through phenomenological face-to-face interviews. Based on their responses to these questions, some categories were obtained by applying the thematic analysis method. None of the participants had any problems in feeling a belonging to Türkiye, but stated that this belonging is different in various parts of their life, and they have no hesitations in returning to their own countries. Language and religion were found as two key factors in ensuring harmony and belonging. It can be concluded that the experiences of immigrants regarding identity, harmony, belonging, and ultimately citizenship are not independent of each other, but have undergone historically- and culturally-driven ethnic changes.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45542419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the first university was established, many different laws have been enacted to regulate the higher education system in Turkey. Each new law or regulation introduced brought along controversies with it, and even caused some social conflicts. Although the Higher Education Law 2547 and the Higher Education Council, which was established on November 6, 1981, are defined as an effort to reform and improve higher education, no consensus is observed among different social segments as to whether it has actually brought an effective regulation or not. This study aims to reveal how the Higher Education Law No. 2547, which has brought great debates since 1981, when it came into force in Turkey, was represented in the press of the period. Thus, the news published in Milliyet, Hürriyet, Tercüman and Cumhuriyet newspapers between 1980 and 1981 were analyzed. The analysis of the news revealed that the new higher education law was discussed by focusing on the administrative and scientific autonomy of universities, problems related to the centralized governance structure, the change and effects of the university admission exam regulations, and the problems faced by university faculty members.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47705041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Metaphors are a lucrative qualitative tool in organizational analysis because extracting and interpreting metaphors that are used by participants in an organization can not only allow researchers to access hidden perceptions or feelings of the participants but also helps them gain insights about a key organization of university-industry relations: Technology Development Zones (TDZ). In this multiple-case study, 20 participants were involved from two universities and an institute of high technology, and their embedded TDZs in Turkey. Participants are high-rank manager-academics, faculty affiliated with university-industry relations, high-rank managers from TDZs and those of firms inside these TDZs. In order to collect data, semi-structured interviews were used in the study. Results from a content analysis of within-case and cross-case data from the three cases in the study showed that participants use superordinate themes of positive and negative metaphors to explain university industry relations. The positive metaphors superordinate theme involves the metaphors of interface, machine, bars district, showcase, and plants, while the negative metaphors superordinate theme includes zombie, babies, and real-estate metaphors. Based on the participants’ descriptions of these metaphors and their justification for their use, some conclusions were made on the participants’ evaluations of the university-industry relations phenomenon, which is the focus of the study.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49078790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These disciplines were included in the present study as they were determined as the priority ones in the training of the human resources by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (CoHE). 88 dissertations were reached in the National Thesis Center database of CoHE in 2018 and subjected to document analysis. The published scientific studies based on these dissertations were primarily searched within authors’ websites, CoHE Academic, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Education Resources Information Center, ResearchGate and Google Scholar. No data could be found for 61 dissertations out of 88 ones. The citations to the articles derived from 17 dissertations, which were searched in Google Scholar, ResearchGate, SCOPUS, SOBIAD and Web of Science databases were bibliometrically analyzed. Only 9 dissertations were cited. While the primary data were used in the dissertations completed in the discipline of psychology, the secondary data were mostly used in the other dissertations. These results indicate that the contribution of the dissertations to the literature and practice is quite limited. Thus, the researchers turned their attention to the contribution of the dissertations produced in other disciplines in the field of social sciences. Several suggestions (e.g. developing researchers’ research skills, studying priority research topics in the Turkish context) were also made to increase the contribution of the dissertations to the literature and practice.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49662584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This management style affects employees in many ways such as performance, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The aim of this study is to determine the level of exposure of research assistants to the mushroom management style in their institution and to examine the relationship between mushroom management perceptions and organizational commitment. The population of the study consists of 152 research assistants working in the health management department of public and foundation universities in Turkey. A questionnaire was used as the data collection tool, and the analyses were conducted on the data of 103 research assistants who completed and returned the questionnaires. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the mushroom management perceptions and organizational commitments of the research assistants in the health management department were at a moderate level. In addition, a weak negative relationship was found between their mushroom management scores and organizational commitment scores. Thus, it was concluded that the more positive mushroom management perceptions are, the lower the organizational commitment is. The findings of the study are important for determining the potential effects of mushroom management perceptions at universities.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43625624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The target population of the study consists of the students of the health vocational school of a foundation university operating in Istanbul in the 2018–2019 academic year. The sample consisted of 450 students. Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis techniques were conducted for the data analysis. The findings revealed that there were moderate level significant relationships between human capital types and employability self-perceptions of students. Social capital, labor market readiness and psychological capital are significant predictors of employability. While perceptions of students about human capital did not differ by class level, their perceptions of employability did. The psychological capital perceptions and employability perceptions of students who were working were found to be higher than those who were not. Furthermore, as students’ family income levels rose, their expectations about the prospective income when participating in labor force were found to increase correspondingly. As a result, this study revealed a relationship between human capital and employability. However, vocational school education was not found to sufficiently create the expected level of human capital among students, and students’ perceptions of employability were found to be influenced by non-educational variables, such as family income and being currently employed.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45324315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If proper measures are not taken, students with special needs are among the groups with high probability of experiencing difficulties even in formal education. Therefore, in this study, the experiences of students with special needs as well as ways to cope with these difficulties during the Covid-19 pandemic were investigated. 56 students with special needs studying in various universities across Turkey participated in the cross-sectional study in which a survey questionnaire developed by the researchers was used. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that students mostly experienced difficulties regarding the devices used (41.07%) and internet access (33.93%). It was also determined that courses and exams were not adapted according to the students’ needs (39.29%), and students experienced difficulties in accessing the resources while preparing for the exams (57.14%). In addition, students also had difficulties in reaching the authorities from the university (28.57%) and reported that the announcements made by the disability services office were inadequate (25%). In dealing with the difficulties students either increased the limit of their internet or bought unlimited internet access packages (62.50%), and they also asked friends (69.64%) and student counselors (42.86%) for help. Although precautions were taken during the Covid-19 pandemic, students with special needs still experienced difficulties in accessing education at universities. For this reason, it is important to conduct comprehensive studies on the causes of the problems experienced to facilitate the educational accessibility for students with special needs and to find solutions for students with special needs to ensure that they actively continue their education.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48478961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study group consisted of 378 students from different faculties of Pamukkale and Muğla Sıtkı Koçman Universities. In the process of developing the scale, a literature review was conducted, a pool of items was constructed, expert opinions were sought, preliminary studies were carried out, first application, second application, validity and reliability analyses were carried out. As a result of the item analyses performed by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, a total of 23 items remained in the scale. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, it was observed that the scale had one-dimensional structure related to life skills supporting learning. The scale items gathered under a single factor explained 43.94% of the total variance. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis, item-factor loading values of the scale items were found to be ranging between .50 and .67. It was found that the differences between the means of the upper and lower 27% groups were significant. The Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient of the scale was found to be a=.94. It was concluded that these findings show that the scale is valid and reliable.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43079080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
