The research design was quasi-experimental, and the study was conducted with a pretest/posttest control group. The sample of the study consisted of 74 students who took a course on gender during the fall semester of the 2016-2017 academic year and 70 students who had similar characteristics but did not receive the course. In the pretest and posttest evaluation conducted in the first week and the last week of the semester, respectively, the Student Information Form, the Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS), the Critical Thinking Dispositions Scale (CTDS), and the Media Literacy Scale (MLS) were administered to the students in both groups. The Course Satisfaction Assessment Form was administered at the end of the term to the students who enrolled for the gender course. The GRAS scores of the experimental group increased at the end of the course (p<0.05). The GRAS total mean scores of both the groups were similar in the pretest, but there was a statistically significant difference between their total mean scores in the posttest (p<0.05). This study recommends more comprehensive and long-term studies on integrating a gender course into the university curriculum, which will help develop students' critical thinking disposition and media literacy skills and raise awareness of gender equality among students.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46477480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different MOOC platforms have emerged in Turkey as a reflection of these developments. The main purpose of this study is to examine MOOCs in the context of Turkish higher education. For this purpose, by adopting the qualitative embedded single case design, the Akadema, AtademiX and Bilgeİş MOOC platforms were examined. The findings indicate that MOOCs successfully serve the universal ideals such as offering equal opportunities in education, democratization of education, and liberation of knowledge in Turkey. Besides, MOOCs were found to contribute to adapting to the changes paralleling the transformations in the globalizing world and in the digital knowledge age; strengthening communication and cooperation channels between the society, industry and university; and finally, fostering social justice with an inclusive approach by increasing operational capabilities in diverse educational domains.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41694688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Designed as a case study, it employs a qualitative research methodology. The sample of the study consists of 15 PhD students determined by using the criterion sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview form. The obtained data were analyzed through content analysis. The findings revealed that some of the PhD students found their supervisors inadequate in terms of technical, managerial and core competencies while some of them had positive opinions on the competencies of their supervisors. PhD students learn about how supervising processes work and compare themselves to their peers by communicating with each other directly and through social media. The study is original and important since it makes a significant contribution to revealing the effectiveness of PhD supervision.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43989317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although this quantitative expansion has brought some advantages, it has also created several problems, the most significant of which have emerged in terms of \"quality\". Whether quality increases in parallel with this expansion is an essential issue to consider. This paper emphasizes that HE institutions need to focus on \"competition\" to support the quantitative expansion in the field of Turkish HE with qualitative improvement. For this purpose, first, the state of the Turkish HE was overviewed from past to present. Next, the importance of \"competition\" for Turkish HE was highlighted and the two fundamental theories of competition were discussed by reviewing the related literature. Finally, a theoretical model based on the factors obtained through an assessment of how these theories can be applied to HE was presented.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45017178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This new life differs from their past experiences in terms of educational experiences, human relations and social life. This descriptive study investigates the adaptation levels of first year nursing students of two different public universities in Izmir, Turkey at the beginning of the academic year and aims to determine the factors affecting their adaptation. The research data were obtained from 125 students enrolled in the nursing department of these universities by using a questionnaire. The data collection tools consisted of socio-demographic form and the University Life Scale. Numbers and percentages, ANOVA, and independent sample t test were used in the analysis. 75.2% of the students included in the study were female, and their mean age was calculated as 9=18.9±1.10. 55.2% of the students voluntarily chose the nursing department. The rate of students who made a university selection for the first time was 97.6%. The students were found to have the highest mean score in the \"adaptation to the university environment\" subscale and the lowest score in the \"academic adaptation\" subscale. The mean scores of adaptation to the university environment, adaptation to relationships with the opposite sex, and total adaptation were found to be higher for the students who opted for the profession willingly than those who did not and this difference was found to be statistically significant (220.202±36.43, p<0.05). The findings indicate that willful selection of the profession, the level of education of the mother, profession of the father, parents' living together, economic status, and living with the family are the variables that affect the adaptation of the students to the university life. Preparing university adaptation programs by taking the individual, social and cultural characteristics affecting the adaptation into account and tailoring the guidance and consultancy services based on student needs may facilitate successful adaptation.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41550048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was also aimed at determining the indicators that affect doctoral students' performance in getting published in academic journals. For this purpose, 1367 doctoral students from 15 different universities were administered a \"Doctoral Education Evaluation Survey\" face-to-face and online. Principal component analysis revealed 4 factors. The majority of doctoral students at the course stage are satisfied with the content of the doctoral program, the faculty members and the doctoral field. As the students' awareness increases over time, their complaints increase. The dissatisfaction of doctoral students reaches the highest level, at the proficiency stage. Furthermore, from the second year on, there is a decline in the satisfaction of doctoral students with the content of the doctoral programs, with the faculty members and the opportunities offered by the doctoral field, to a statistically significant extent. Especially those working in the social sciences complain that research methods are not taught enough. Binary logistic regression was applied to determine the indicators affecting the publication performance of the doctoral students in academic journals. The participation of doctoral students in international academic symposiums emerged as the most important indicator. The other predictive variables are doctoral students' participation in a project, working as a research assistant at the university, and completion of the course stage. Encouraging the participation of doctoral students in academic congresses with their advisors or their colleagues will contribute to increasing their publication performance.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49308072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Self-Esteem Scale developed by Tafarodi and Swann (1995), The Attitude toward Future and Positive Future Expectations Scales developed by İmamoğlu (2001), The Oxford Happiness Scale-Short Form developed by Hills and Argyle (2002), and a personal information form were used to collect the data. The data were obtained from 715 university students studying at Manavgat Vocational School, with one of the highest number of students at Akdeniz University. Reliability analysis, factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. These analyses revealed positive and significant relationships among happiness, \"self-liking\" and \"self-competence\", which are the sub-dimensions of Self-Esteem Scale. Positive significant relationships were found between \"positive orientation\" and \"planned orientation\" sub-dimensions of attitude toward future scale, and happiness. However, a negative significant relationship was found between \"anxious orientation\" and happiness. A positive significant relationship was found between positive future expectation and happiness. In addition, from among all the independent variables, the \"self-liking\" sub-dimension was found to have the highest effect on happiness. This was followed by the planned orientation, positive future expectation, anxious orientation, positive orientation, and self-competence sub-dimensions. Self-esteem, attitude toward future, and positive future expectation had a share of 54% in describing the total change in happiness. The findings were discussed in light of the literature and some suggestions were made for school administrations.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49452134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Higher education institutions tasked with raising the human profile needed for various business sectors are undergoing a digital transformation, supported by digital technology. The focus of this digital transformation is open and distance learning. Open and distance learning is becoming increasingly important, and is becoming an effective way to access the most up-to-date information, especially for working adult individuals. Open and distance learning, which covers mass education activities, reach more people than face-to-face education by its nature and so it produces more graduates. This important feature of open and distance learning necessitates studies to reveal the employment status of graduates in different countries. Using the basic qualitative model, this study aims to examine open and distance learners' views on employment. Thus, the employment-related views of 92 open and distance learning graduates from Anadolu University in Turkey, Open University in UK, and Indira Gandhi National Open University in India were analyzed. The themes obtained through content analysis were peer views, expectations for employment, gaining prestige after graduation, career planning, increasing diversity in the business sectors of open education, and the need for experience for employment.
