This study was conducted by applying the phenomenological design, which is one of the qualitative research designs. The participants were determined using the criterion sampling and snowball methods. The interview form was designed by the researcher in line with the purpose of the study, and the data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 20 faculty members working at Süleyman Demirel University. After the analysis of the audio recordings of the interviews, the data were coded using the interpretive phenomenology method based on the basic questions of the research. The Nvivo 12 Plus qualitative data analysis program was used to analyze the data. It was concluded that the academic staff earn a good reputation as long as they serve the mission of education-research and contribute to the society, but the administrators and management style of their institution also have a strong impact on their academic reputation. The personal, organizational and social determinants of academic reputation and the factors that damage or improve it were also identified. Finally, some suggestions were made on how to improve academic reputation.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45722490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research was conducted with 28 volunteering undergraduate students studying at various departments of a public university. Applying an experimental design, the data were obtained by pre-test, post-test and follow up test, and two groups were formed as experimental and placebo groups. The participants were randomly assigned into two groups as the experiment group and the placebo group, and each group consisted of 14 students. The participants’ life satisfaction levels were measured by using the Life Satisfaction Scale developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen and Griffin (1985), and adapted into Turkish by Dağlı and Baysal (2016). Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon procedures were used to analyze the data. The results of the study show that the group psychoeducation program -which intended to increase internal locus of control- has a positive effect on the life satisfaction of the participants and this effect is sustained at the end of the three-month follow up period.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43994013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, a research study using mixed method research was designed. The quantitative part of the research was implemented with 206 academics and the qualitative part was conducted with 141 of the 206 academics in October– December 2018. The work happiness was found to be higher in the faculty members than research assistants. It was observed that the increase in intrinsic satisfaction decreased the negative emotions and increased the happiness at work, and happiness increased with higher level of education. The factors affecting the happiness at work were identified as academics’ work environment, working conditions, factors related to the work itself and leadership characteristics of their supervisors. The qualitative data show that academics who frequently express the factors that affect their happiness at work positively have positive feelings and fewer negative emotions while those who often express negative emotions have lower positive and higher negative feelings. Based on the positive and negative statements in the qualitative data, the most important factor negatively affecting the academics’ happiness at work is the workplace relations, and the most important factor that positively affects happiness is the work itself.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48676433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept of organizational agility (OA) refers to a dynamic organization that can sense the change imposed by internal and external elements, routinely implement change, and has the capacity to learn continuously. Based on this concept, this research aims to develop a scale to discover the perceptional evaluations of academic and administrative staff of public universities in the context of OA, and thereby to establish an OA framework for public universities. The research was carried out in psychometric design. The resulting Organizational Agility Scale in Higher Education was pilot tested and administered to 893 academic and administrative staff from 10 public universities in Istanbul. The principal components analysis with varimax rotation supported four dimensions. Through confirmatory factor analysis, four-factor structure was found to be at acceptable level. Four dimensions of the scale (strategy and staff-oriented organizational design, internal stakeholder orientation, cooperation with external stakeholders, support for innovation) focus more on human side of higher education institutions and less on change management and responsiveness, compared to business agility. The findings imply that institutional and national efforts are needed to form a strategy and stakeholder-oriented organization design for universities. A separate OA framework should be constructed for private universities to reach a more holistic understanding of Turkish HE and to compare public and private higher education institutions and to discover how Turkish HE system can be more agile and responsive in national and international contexts.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46434212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of the study is to clarify the subject by explaining both the related concepts and the relevant texts of the law and to fill the literature gap on the subject. Based on the qualitative research approach and content analysis research design, the main sources are the relevant legal and administrative regulatory acts. These sources are the Higher Education Law numbered 2547 and the Law No.7100, which provides amendments to this law, the Regulation on the Principles to be Followed in National and International Employment No.18214 which clarifies the related law texts, the provisions of the amended regulation numbered 30297, The Higher Education Personnel Law No. 2914, and finally, the Academic Staff Training Program Directives of the universities. All in all, there are some important legal and administrative regulatory acts on academic staff training in Türkiye. However, numerous legal and administrative regulations, excessive diversity and inconsistency in practices render this specific legal domain complicated. Furthermore, due to the lengthy process of academic staff training and development, higher education suffers from faculty understaffing.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45417674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this phenomenological study, the data were collected by using a semi-structured interview form with 14 academic staff members teaching in public universities in Istanbul, Ankara, Edirne, Izmir, and Manisa. The obtained qualitative data were analyzed by using MAXQDA and coded under certain themes. The findings show that verbal and psychological (emotional) bullying is the most common type of bullying bullying in the classroom observed by the academic staff members. While most of the participants stated that they indirectly intervened in the cases of peer bullying they witnessed, having older students and feeling pedagogically not competent enough to intervene in bullying were the biggest challenges impeding action. When asked about their suggestions on the subject, the participants stated that in-service trainings about peer bullying at the institutional level should be organized and that faculty administrations should play an active role in organizing these trainings and creating institutional policies about peer bullying.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46929411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study, which adopts a qualitative approach, was designed as a case study, and the document analysis technique was used for the data collection. In line with the purpose of the study, the web pages of the Departments of Educational Administration in 78 Turkish universities were examined and the mission statements of 48 departments were obtained. These mission statements were then analyzed descriptively. The mission statements were classified under three main themes: education-training, scientific research, and community service. The mission that is emphasized the strongest in by the Educational Administration Departments was “improving the professional development of educators” under the education-training theme. While the most frequently repeated mission under the scientific research theme is “knowledge generation and dissemination in the field”, “producing knowledge for the educational needs of the society” is observed as the primary mission under the theme of serving the society. The Department of Educational Administration missions were discussed in terms of how they reflect the identity of the field, how up-to-date and applicable they are, and to what extent they are suitable for higher education purposes. Based on the findings of the study, administrators and lecturers in Educational Administration Departments are suggested to adopt the due care and meticulousness in the preparation of their departmental missions.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44173908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to investigate the mobility of students and academicians at the international level, within the framework of partnerships between universities and international mobility BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) programs in Türkiye. The study used a descriptive method with an online survey and was carried out on 82 BSN programs during the 2017–2018 academic year. The data in the study was collected by means of the “Student and Academician Mobility Information Form” and it revealed that 70.7% of the faculties with BSN programs were from State universities and that all these institutions had student and academician mobility programs. 58.5% of the departments had at least one student who went abroad in the context of mobiliy and Poland was the most preferred choice (18.1%). 70.7% of the universities had no foreign students and for those institutions who did, the country having the highest number of students who enrolled in Türkiye, from a total of 21 countries, was Spain. There were academic staff and faculty who went abroad within the scope of the programs in more than half of the BSN programs (53.7%). Mobility programs are important for the development of the nursing profession. In order to use these more actively in BSN education, internationalization can be encouraged, and the required guidance should be given to students and academics.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49638426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Policies oriented toward internationalization have been scarce and have depended on financial opportunities from developed countries. Since academics are key actors in the development of internationalization, and the academic profession in Argentina is heterogeneous and fragmented, the extent to which recent internationalization policies on higher education might impact on the international level of Argentine academic activity is still unknown. This article delves into the questions of whether being international today is either an option or a privilege for Argentine academics, and how this condition determines their perception of the value of internationalization at the institutions where they work, given their central role at the university. To do this, we have relied on the 2018 Academic Profession in the Knowledge-based Society (APIKS) survey to analyze the level of academic internationalization in Argentina in relation to personal and professional qualities. We, therefore, examine our questions aiming toward the creation of favorable academic environments for institutional internationalization. Our findings could be helpful in thinking up a comprehensive change for institutional internationalization and, therefore, institutional quality.","PeriodicalId":42261,"journal":{"name":"Yuksekogretim Dergisi","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46902011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
