It is being harvested and cooked in coconut milk mixed with edible fern. Thereis a dearth of information regarding its biology and fishery in the Bicol region. This absence of informationnecessitated this study. The study was conducted in Buradan River, Viga, Catanduanes, from January 2013to May 2014. Spatial distribution of the species was observed to be a clumped distribution (mean index ofaggregation is 0.03). There were 28,921 individuals gathered: the average length is 40.14 mm and averageweight is 4.57 g. The length-weight relationship was obtained as W = 0.00025 × L=2.624. The estimatedlength-at-first maturity was 32.04 mm for females and 33.64 mm for males. This species exhibits ovoviviparityas the mode of development. The distribution of the sexes is 1:1. Gonado-somatic index is highest in themonths of October and December. The estimated population param were: L ∞ = 71.26 mm, K= 0.39 year−1,Z=1.85 year−1; M= 0.69 year−1; and F= 1.16 year−1. Exploitation rate is 0.63. The estimated MSY/R is 6.53 g perrecruit, corresponding to a length of 48.29 mm, and the F(MSY) is 3.5 per year. The results showed that thepopulation of J. asperata is overexploited and overfished, and management policy must be implemented forthe stock to recover","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114266207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study utilized mixed methods of research, specifically the developmental-descriptive-evaluative method in the development of the curriculum guide for physical science courses. The curriculum guide showing the integration of environmental education concepts and principles consisted of ten lessons distributed across the different subjects. This was successfully implemented over a nine-week period. The EE-enhanced physical science lessons were effective in developing awareness and understanding of the environmental concepts and principles. Students further gained positive attitudes and behaviors, which prepared them for their job as future eco-mentors. It is recommended that the curriculum guide and the EE-enhanced physical science lessons be implemented in other teacher education institutions and in other institutions of higher learning offering a variety of undergraduate courses other than teacher education.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129612210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the main question investigated in this paper. Specifically, it identified the types and instances of code-switching in the interactions among members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Albay (Albay Provincial Council) and describes their pragmatic functions, focusing on politeness as a motivation. Using available methods in identifying politeness strategies, the paper revealed via content analysis that code-switching is a politeness indicator in the given context. The paper infers that code-switching figures as a politeness marker in Albayano communication, as exemplified by their provincial council members. It concludes that while English still exists as a language of power and prestige in the province, it is inadequate in the achievement of social and interactional goals of communication such as the need to be polite and, thus, code-switching becomes necessary.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128145757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are turning out 465,000 graduates every year on the average. Aside from the issue on the absorptive capacity of the labor market based on its required knowledge, skills, attitude and values, the quality of graduates is also an issue. The challenge is for HEIs to determine the relevance of curricular programs and their potential job marketability. Research-based approaches and strategies should be established to provide students a set of achievements, skills, understanding, and personal attributes that make them more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations which benefit themselves, the workforce, the community, and the economy. This tracer study of the Bicol University College of Arts and Letters assessed how well the college has trained its graduates for life in the workplace. It found that majority of the graduates are gainfully employed in related workplaces. Most of them got their first job within one month to less than three years after graduation and stayed in their first job within one month to less than three years. Compensation benefits such as salaries and other non-monetary benefits are the factors that made the graduates stay or leave their first job. Almost all competencies learned by the graduates were found very helpful and relevant to their jobs. Feedback and recommendations were also gained from both the graduates and the employers in order to improve the employability of the graduates. Findings indicate a need to revisit the curricular programs in order to address those issues.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130757148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an attempt to contribute to the sustainable development goal on good health and well-being (SDG 3) aimed at reducing the neonatal mortality rate in the country. This study determined the profile of mothers in the resettlement site of barangay Taysan in Legazpi City as well as their infant health beliefs and practices. It utilized the descriptive survey method and questionnaire-checklist as data-gathering instruments administered to 84 respondents who are mothers with children between the ages zero and one year old residing at Taysan resettlement site. Majority of the respondents were young housewives with meager income, with three children, and having had their first pregnancy when they were 22 years old. Based on ranking, their most common infant health beliefs on infant feeding, hygiene, and care of the sick include the following concepts: breastfeeding promotes mother-baby bonding and breast milk is better than infant formula in contents, bathing the infant any day except Tuesdays and Fridays to prevent illnesses caused by evil spirits, and applying chewed leaves or betel juice ( mama ) on the baby’s abdomen that can treat bloated belly and wounds. Their popular practices include breastfeeding regularly and breastfeeding infant on the well breast, applying 70% alcohol on the umbilical cord three times a day to prevent infection and promote wound healing, and giving doctor-prescribed medications only after consultation . Cultural beliefs and traditional practices still exist, which are associated with health risks and adverse health outcomes. Hence, there is a need to enhance the implementation of the essential newborn care (ENC) protocol while recognizing and appreciating indigenous health beliefs and practices.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126376114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was designed to assess the existing value chains of pen shell and identify areas for improvement. The sites covered were the municipalities along Sorsogon Bay in the province of Sorsogon, Philippines. It employed the tracer methodology where only the processors and fisherfolks connected to the traders were selected as respondents of the study. Primary data were gathered through semi-structured questionnaires. Secondary data were used to establish a good understanding of the pen shell industry in the areas of the study. Results show that the adductor muscle or tinga is a substitute for scallops, thus, an export product. The other parts of pen shell or rambit are also of high demand. The highest volume of pen shell catch occur during October to April during the northeast monsoon (amihan) and gradually decline from May to September during the southwest monsoon (habagat) months. The value chain maps reflect the whole meat and semi-processed value chains, the two distinct marketing practices traced in the pen shell industry. The actors in the two value chains are the fisherfolks, processors, traders, and exporters. The enablers are the fisherfolks’ organization, local government unit (LGU), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (CFARMC), microfinance institutions, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Phil Export. There is uneven distribution of value added in both chains. More value is created and captured by the processors while the fisherfolks have negative gains. The value-added captured by the processors and traders are higher in semi-processed practice. There is the need to focus on the supply of pen shell, the effects of pollution of Sorsogon Bay, market information, technology to preserve the quality of products, industry association, and basic researches on pen shell under Sorsogon Bay condition.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133079970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
