An institutionalized peer-mediated academic support system can help in addressing the student’s academic needs and problems. The Institutionalized Peer Academic Assistance Program (I-PASS) in Mathematics was implemented to enhance the problem solving skills of 60 BEED students of BU College of Education with BSED Mathematics major students as mentors during the 1st Semester SY 2012- 2013. Data were gathered using parallel pre-test and posttest results in problem solving, documentary analysis, focus group discussions, interview and questionnaires for mentees, mentors, and concerned officials of the college. The student’s peer mentoring program was found effective in terms of enhancing the problem solving skills of both mentors and mentees whose test results showed a mean gain of 3.72 and 4.74, respectively. The t-test of the I-PASS and non-I-PASS participants’ posttest results in problem solving in Mathematics (t = 0.002484143, p<0.01) revealed a significant difference. Its features such as open to all students, free, voluntary, based on learning needs, used developmentally appropriate learning materials, individualized and group learning strategies, supervised by discipline experts, and based on pedagogical principles, were acceptable to all the stakeholders, contribute to make the program academically sound and valid, and help ensure its sustainability. The students’ participation in peer mentoring led to useful insights and favorable beneficial experiences. The university-wide implementation of I-PASS can help in proactively minimizing the students’ difficulties in mathematical problem solving.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115366402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Along with the trauma, children are involved in the legal system to pursue criminal cases against their perpetrators. This is another challenge as these children face alleged perpetrators, relive traumatic experiences and be under scrutiny in testifying during case proceedings. However, children with legal proceedings usually receive biases and little consistency in the treatment of abuse. Despite the significance of psychological intervention in helping prepare child witnesses, dealing with trauma and healing process, not all abused children with on-going court measures are referred to receive it. This study focused on referred abused children and assessed the impact of psychological intervention in going through the case proceedings. The in-depth interviews provided details, status of the case and interventions received to establish the profile of the abused children. The emotional competence of the abused children who received and did not receive any form of psychological intervention was established through results of BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version. The impact of the psychological intervention was established through the expressed changes after the received forms of psychological intervention. A focus group discussion with multidisciplinary intervention teams validated the findings of the study, confirmed the need to strengthen the psychological interventions in the local government unit and the agreement of implementing the proposed psychological intervention program “TASK(Tabang Asin Pagmamakulog Sa Kaakian): Psychological Wellness Modules to help more abused children and protect them.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123166861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The hindering and contributing factors to their employment; aspects of the curricula that need to be upgraded/adjusted; and measures to enhance employability of the graduates were also dealt with. A survey of graduates randomly taken from each batch was done using questionnaires sent via personal courier/postal mail and electronic mode. Feedbacks from 21 employers of the sampled graduates were also sought. Out of the target 344 graduates, 196 or 57% respondents participated. Of the 196 graduates, 78% of them are employed. Among the common reasons cited by those who are unemployed are: (a) pursuit of further studies, (b) family responsibility, and (c) job order status or work not suitable. Short time for hands-on training and lack of upgraded laboratory equipment were pointed out by the graduates as hindering factors to employment. Positive attitude towards work and willingness to learn are the topmost qualities that most of the employer-respondents regarded as extremely important. Likewise, leadership, teamwork, and customer relation are the topmost general skills considered extremely important by most of the employers. The curriculum completed by the graduates of 2008, 2009, and 2010 may be considered effective in general in terms of producing employable graduates. Surpassing the regional and national employment rate, though, should be pursued.The following policies that are commonly-recognized as necessary, but are oftentimes set aside yet could enhance employability of BUCIT graduates are: (a) strict admission of students, (b) expanded time for practical or hands-on learning, (c) allocation of school funds for instructional facilities, (d) strong academe-industry linkage, and (e) institutionalized tracking and monitoring of graduates.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133023869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the descriptive survey method, this study aimed to determine the health beliefs and practices of mothers on infant feeding, hygiene and care of sick infant; determine conformance to Essential Newborn Care protocols; and identify implications of health beliefs and practices on the health of infant. Data were gathered through questionnaire-checklist from sixty-eight (68) women with children 0-1 year old residing in Arandurugan Village Guinobatan, Albay. The beliefs and practices of mothers were varied. The mothers were found to strongly believe in breastfeeding while some believed in herbolarios, using of guava/santol leaves in bathing after an illness, breastfeeding while hungry as cause of ill health, applying chewed leaves/saliva on the baby’s abdomen as treatment for colic, and wearing amulet or religious articles to ward off evil spirits. Additionally, the mothers always practiced breastfeeding and often practiced applying alcohol on the umbilical cord, bathing with warm water while covering the umbilical cord with dressing, and frequently practiced applying baby oil on scalp/body, cutting hair only when child reaches one year old, and keeping windows/ doors closed while bathing. In caring for sick infants, mothers consulted doctor or midwife, and sometimes gave medications not prescribed by doctors. The mothers’ belief and practices particularly on infant feeding is in conformance with the Essential Newborn Care (ENC) protocol utilizing the BEmONC approach. However, there is a strong need to educate the mothers particularly on hygiene and care of sick infant.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125630848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ethnographic methods of data collection, as well as the vertical and horizontal tests of Manuel (1985) were employed in the validation of 74 diversified folktales gathered from the said locale. The Labovian and literary approaches for the structural and textual analysis were employed to identify structural patterns, themes, beliefs, values, cultural practices and traditions discernible from the texts. This study revealed that the environment plays a major influence in the creation, transmission and diffusion of varied types of folktales, while the life of a folktale largely depends upon its narrators and on its generational transmission. One of the tangible examples of cultural heritage is the physical structures including the century old churches. The study looked into the existing historical narratives of the century old Catholic churches: the Nuestra Señora de Salvacion in Joroan, Tiwi, Albay; the Our Lady of the Gate in Daraga, Albay; the San Juan de Bautista in Tabaco City, and the St. John the Baptist in Camalig, Albay. The secondary sources of history were evaluated on their reliability and validity based on the elements of history. The historical narratives were also analyzed using the following codes: the Patron Saints; factors that paved to their constructions; the people responsible for their constructions; the misconceptions about their constructions; and their contributions to Bikol heritage. The historical documents were found to be reliable and valid based on the elements of history. Based on the codes, themes were identified as Marian Devotees and Christ-centered Patron Saints; geographical, sociopolitical and cultural factors paved to the construction; church and government officials were responsible in the construction; misconceptions are on the dates of constructions and original sites where the church were constructed; and the contributions to Bikol heritage which include: popular pilgrim sites and well-admired architectural designs. These tests were conducted in order to determine the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity activities against the test subjects. The generated IC50 values are 0.54 mg/ml and 0.20 mg/ml for Canarium ovatum and Cocos nucifera , respectively. The sea urchin egg cells possess strong sensitivity against toxic agents as well as onion root cells which display the genetic correspondence of the cells affected by noxious substances. Canarium ovatum crude bark extracts exhibited a significant inhibition activity (p < 0.0001) against the sea urchin egg cell fertilization whereas the Cocos nucifera bark extracts did not show any significant inhibition. In terms of its genotoxicity, Canarium ovatum crude bark extracts exhibited a significant inhibition on the mitotic indexes and increased the frequency of aberrations in the onion root cells whereas no significant inhibition on the mitotic indexes of the root cells was observed among those treated with Cocos nucifera . Phytochemical screening results of Canarium ovatum crude bark extracts presented abundant compounds such as flavonoids, phenols, tannins and with traces of saponins. For the Cocos nucifera crude bark extracts, compounds such as saponins were found abundant with traces of flavonoids, phenols, tannins, diterpenes and terpenoids. The results indicated that Canarium ovatum possess anti-proliferative potential as exhibited in the two assays while Cocos nucifera possess toxic potentials at certain concentrations. Further studies are needed to validate the results of the present investigation.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127034597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Together with this comes the need to ensure that the faculty to implement the new curricula are ready to teach new subjects that will certainly be added. Using Hass and Parkay’s Model of Curriculum Design, this study looked into the readiness of faculty of Bicol University to implement the new CHED-prescribed AB English curriculum. Through a survey, document analysis, and a Focus Group Discussion (FGD), it determined the perceived level of readiness of the faculty to teach new subjects under the new curriculum and the actual level of readiness of the faculty to teach the said subjects, and it identified strategies that may be adopted to better prepare the English Department for this new curriculum. Findings revealed a discrepancy between perceived and actual readiness of the faculty, where members considered themselves ready, but their documents showing mismatches in educational preparation, teaching experience, and professional development. Training/retooling, full implementation of OBE, production of instructional materials that are K to 12–ready; adequate equipment and facilities; and immersion, apprenticeship, or fellowship abroad are the strategies identified to best prepare the faculty for the implementation of the new curriculum. Recommendations are immediate retooling and earning of appropriate postgraduate degrees, realignment of degrees and careful choice of seminars and trainings to be attended, and preparation of retooling/training package to factor in each individual faculty member in terms of interests and expertise based on the new subjects to be offered in the new CHED-prescribed AB English curriculum.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122574186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
