Eight fungal endophytes were isolated from the leaves and fruits. Seven were identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae, Nigrospora sphaerica, Guignardia mangiferae, Coprinopsis cinerea, Colletotrichum siamense and Colletotrichum truncatum while one remained unidentified. The extracted metabolites from the isolates were then screened for their antibacterial activities at 1,000 µg/mL. Among the fungal isolates, C. cinerea was found to be the most active against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli with zones of inhibition (ZOI) of 16.00 ± 1.00 and 17.00 ± 1.53 mm, respectively. Phytochemical screening showed that C. cinerea produced a variety of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids and quinones. The other fungal endophytes were also found to synthesize various secondary compounds that may be responsible for their antibacterial activities.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116339248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Filipinos consider the albula ryo as the prima ry dispensers of health ca re in folk medicine a nd is referred to as the general practitioner. Despite the long history of traditional healers’ practice, there a re limited studies on their unique experiences as healers including the experiences of their pa tients in their healing a bilities. The purpose of this study is to document the unique experiences in traditional medicines widely practiced by both traditional healers a nd their pa tients on va rious aspects rela ted to sa fety a nd effectiveness of the herbal pla nts. This study used phenomenology a nd ethnographic resea rch approach. Da ta were ga thered from 30 traditional healers who used herbal medicines alone or in combina tion or with other traditional modalities, have been residents of the community for a t least one yea r, a nd have been practicing indigenous healing for a t least five yea rs. Three hundred pa tients aged 18 yea rs old, presently being trea ted or have consulted on several occasions with the selected traditional healers, were interviewed using the self-structured interview guide, which were valida ted through focus group discussions (FGD). Results showed tha t the Bicola no traditional healers a nd their pa tients believe tha t using herbal medicines stem from the perspective of the pa tients’ “feeling” sta te as well as perceived a bsence of side effects from its usage. Both the traditional healers a nd their pa tients a re cogniza nt in upholding the sa fe use of herbal pla nts through personal responsibility a nd accounta bility. The sites covered were the municipalities along Sorsogon Bay, in the province of Sorsogon, Philippines. It employed the tracer methodology. Only the traders and fisherfolks connected to the concessionaires and exporters were selected as respondents. Primary data were gathered through semi-structured questionnaires. Secondary data were used to establish a good understanding of the carpet shell industry. The highest volume of carpet shell catch occurred during December to April during the northeast monsoon ( Amihan ) and gradually declined from May to November during the southwest monsoon ( Habagat ) months. The Value Chain Maps reflected the fresh carpet for local market and for export market value chains, the two distinct marketing practices traced in the carpet shell industry. The actors in the two Value Chains are the fisherfolks, traders, concessionaires and exporters. The enablers are the fisherfolks’ organization, local government units (LGUs), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (CFARMC), and microfinance institutions. More value is created and captured by the traders while the fisherfolks have least gains. The value-added captured by the traders were higher in fresh carpet shells for the local market than the export market. The areas of improvement will provide solutions to the problems on the supply of carpet shell, pollution of Sorsogon Bay, market information, technology to preserve the quality of products, industry association, and basic researches on carpet shell under Sorsogon Bay condition.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"50 4-5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132223705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study looked into stakeholders’ awareness of the BUCN VMGO, the college’s strategies towards its attainment, and possible enhancements towards its wider dissemination and greater assurance of attainment. This is a cross-sectional type of research which utilized a mix of sampling designs for selecting respondents—namely total enumeration for students; random sampling for BUCN administration, teaching, and non-teaching staff; and purposive sampling for parents, alumni, community, and linkages. Results show that stakeholders are highly aware of the BUCN VMGO due to wide dissemination through posters, flyers, IEC materials, and social media. The college’s strategies towards the attainment of its VMGO are seen to be well-practiced, most significant of which are ensuring a pool of highly qualified professors, distributing various VMGO info-dissemination materials, and promoting its personnel’s professional and personal development, and taking responsibility for students’ advancement. Areas for improvement include BUCN’s regular tracking of graduates, undertaking activities with institutional linkages and communities, encouraging students to join organizations and participate in their activities, and having parents and guardians commit to overseeing their children’s and wards’ academic standing. Summarily, it ca n be said that stakeholders are cognizant of BUCN’s VMGO, that BUCN implements effective strategies to realize its VMGO, and that different stakeholders have distinctive suggestions to help BUCN attain its vision and to improve the college in general.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"35 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123259583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study developed and implemented a web-based information system designed to serve as repository of resources and socio-economic assessments for Asid Gulf. The study used Rational Unified Process (RUP) methodology which utilizes open libraries, application programming interface (APIs) and Geographical Information system (GIS) tools. Information gathered from field surveys and community validation through project components are the primary basis in designing the system components. The developed system provided a wide-range of information in the interest of the fisheries and aquatic resources management. Some of the features include the updated socio-economic profile, aquatic ecology and habitat assessments, baselines of the primary water quality parameters for marine waters, updated fisheries industry profile, and GIS maps of Asid gulf. Government agencies, local government units (LGUs), and partner institutions can use the information in terms of education, livelihood, agriculture and fisheries, health and crafting the coastal resource management plan. The implementation of the system is one of the government efforts to improve the governance capability through the development of internet-based technologies across all stakeholders and agencies for a more efficient operation which shall promote good governance and digital transformation to enhance the organization and intergovernmental coordination.","PeriodicalId":422131,"journal":{"name":"Bicol University Research and Development Journal","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117006643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
