Mandelstam’s artistic and philosophical thought, the intellectual style of his poetry. For Mandelstam, poetry is a special form of man’s existence in the axiological horizon of culture, a form that becomes the content and task of creative work, including its civic resonance. The philosophical reinterpretation of Mandelstam’s legacy that the author proposes is linked to an understanding of his artistic work as a special form of spiritual experience, as an event in being, through which a verbal statement turns into an ideal artistic model of the world, that is, into a poetic work. Poetic consciousness has its being in the word, which is existentially colored and ethically intensive. The search for a whole, for a profound harmony, drives the poet’s intuitions and determines his means of perceiving and artistically representing thought-images.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"90 - 104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48248297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on works of both Russian and international scholars, the author examines the markers for music as philosophy in Mandelstam’s poetry and prose. The author identifies the common foundations of music and law, including freedom, measure, and harmony, to build the following system of argumentation. Mandelstam’s panmusical approach is rooted in a special sense of the poet’s language, of its nonverbal basis, while also serving as a starting point for thought to come into being, as the origin of personal transformation. Music in Mandelstam’s life and work thus acts as a general law of the universe, as immutable for the natural world as it is for the world of man and the world of culture.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"146 - 153"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46205581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

E. Mandelstam’s poetics, which has been of great interest to philologists and thus sufficiently studied to date, as the philosophical–culturological aspects of his work. To fill this lacuna, it is vital that we compare Mandelstam’s poetic works with his prose, theory, criticism, and polemics. The poet’s statements in these genres largely clarify his attitude toward culture. In particular, this article examines the question of the poet’s interest in philosophy and the natural sciences, which is expressed both in his poems and in his attitude to culture. His publications on theory also shed light on his experiments in poetry. Drawing parallels between his contemporary culture and other cultures that exist or had existed in history, Mandelstam’s whimsical culturological associations avoid any detailed narrative development, highlighting only individual features and producing a number of apparently necessary details. This is precisely what testifies to the specific features of Mandelstam’s own poetry. Such a technique requires a sort of co-authorship and cocreation on the reader’s part, the very kind that a contemporary postmodernist aesthetic calls for. The present article also highlights the issue of theoretical and philosophical understanding of the poet’s Acmeism as an independent poetic system in relation to other artistic trends that existed in the first decades of the twentieth century, above all in relation to Symbolism and Futurism, which influenced Mandelstam’s own work.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"105 - 124"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45106412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author argues that Mandelstam as a poet was shaped by the literary traditions of “Russian northernness,” which begins with Gavriil Derzhavin and Prince Pyotr Viazemskii. Mandelstam was a direct literary disciple of the Russian Symbolist poet of Swedish origins I.I. Oreus (under the literary pseudonym “Ivan Konevskoi”), who also greatly influenced the work of Aleksandr Blok, Valery Bryusov, and the early Boris Pasternak. The author of this article believes that after the revolution, when “northerner-Petersburg” Russia acquired a Bolshevik appearance, a radical shift began in Mandelstam’s self-consciousness, leading to his attempt to form a new personal self-identification as a man of the cultural “South” who tragically found himself in the barbaric “North.”","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"136 - 145"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41865830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chicherin and the socialist Karl Marx on two fundamental issues where they engaged in polemics, albeit indirectly. The first part of the article examines the issue of the Russian rural commune, its present and future, and the place and rights of individuals in that community. Chicherin saw these communes as an institution of peasant enslavement and an obstacle to Russia’s development. Marx saw them as the most important resource for building socialism, as the main form of organizing agriculture via socialized land. The second part of the article analyzes Chicherin’s and Marx’s interpretations of dialectics and how these interpretations influenced their understandings of economic and social reality. The two interpretations of dialectics provide two fundamentally different pictures of capitalism and socialism, on individuality and personal freedom.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"28 - 42"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10611967.2021.1909984","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49197582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chicherin in his major work on the history of political thought. Chicherin uses two forms of systematization for political doctrines: in one, he draws attention to the main element used in explaining society (power, personal freedom, law, or the ideal goal of development); in the other, he refers to the initial level of explanation (rational principles, empirical facts, or a synthesis of the two). This article shows that, despite the great significance of Chicherin’s work in Russian philosophy, his proposed model does not correlate well with the real history of political thought and fails to provide an understanding of the general developmental logic of political ideas. The author demonstrates how a more accurate classification of types of political doctrines took shape in mainstream Russian philosophy, expressed in its final form by Semyon L. Frank in his book The Spiritual Foundations of Society. There are two false understandings of society: “singularism,” in which society is seen as an external combination of ontologically separate persons, and “universalism,” in which individuals are completely subordinated to a single national or universal spirit. Frank calls the accurate approach the “organic theory of society,” where the primary ontological unity of individuals is dialectically combined with their secondary, relative autonomy. This article shows that Chicherin’s main error in his philosophical analysis of society lies in rejecting this ontological unity of individuals as the basis of public life.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"67 - 79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10611967.2021.1909987","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43612060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following the early nineteenth-century German philosophers (Fichte, Hegel), Chicherin proves the falsity of liberalism’s philosophical foundations and, above all, the fallacy of its individualism. The latter assumes that the individual is not just independent of society and the state but also primary in relation to them, as well as a limited understanding of freedom that is reducible to an absence of external restrictions on human activity. As Chicherin shows, the stability of a state built on these principles can be ensured only by manipulating the consciousness of its citizens such that they are satisfied with their rulers. The Russian version of liberalism created by Chicherin and his followers is based on an understanding of the individual’s dependence on society’s spiritual wholeness, as well as on an understanding of freedom as man’s spiritual inner quality manifested primarily in his ability to create high culture. Russian liberalism views the state as a value equal to and complementary to the value of individual freedom, defining it as a way of organizing the life of a people that arises naturally in history and is independent of the will of individuals.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"13 - 27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10611967.2021.1909983","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47652278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to Boris N. Chicherin, this problem should have resolved naturally and without any specific state measures, including resettlement policy, and at the peasants’ expense. Chicherin proposed resolving the labor question by encouraging workers to create mutual aid funds, charity, and private foundations. It turns out that the Russian philosopher was not sufficiently aware of the problem of the growth of and reasons for the labor movement in the Russian empire. Similarly, Chicherin suggested an ethical approach to the national question, primarily in relation to the Polish, Finnish, and Jewish peoples. He believed the inhabitants of a particular region should decide for themselves which state to consider their homeland. The Polish people deserved to be granted their freedom. As for the Jewish people, Chicherin proposed abolishing all discriminatory norms and practices, granting them all civil rights, and countering manifestations of anti-Semitism by the public and the state. Chicherin considered the question of Finland’s status within the Russian Empire one of allowing the region the highest possible autonomy. Based on the detailed analysis of the thinker’s ideas and theories, the article concludes that though we can recognize Chicherin’s approach to solving the national question as successful, his solutions to agrarian and labor problems would only have aggravated the situation.","PeriodicalId":42094,"journal":{"name":"RUSSIAN STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY","volume":"59 1","pages":"54 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/10611967.2021.1909986","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47418272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It considers several points of view on this issue (expressed by Nikolai Berdyaev, Petr Struve, Georgii Plekhanov, Vasilii Zen’kovskii) and analyzes Chicherin’s works of the 1850s–1860s that have provoked the most heated debates. The author attempts to show that assessing the conservative element in Chicherin’s worldview is not as straightforward a task as is commonly assumed. His concepts of conservatism and “protective principles” do not fit within broader understandings of conservatism.
