The study covered the general area of Szczecin and extended to older-generation buildings constructed before the mid-nineteenth century. Ethnological maps from the first half of the twentieth century that depicted the border of two large areas with differing vernacular culture characteristics served as a basis for discussion. This difference concerned not only the forms of houses, but most importantly manifestations of folk culture. A description of the historical fishing village of Mścięcino, located between Szczecin and Police, proved crucial to the investigation. Some of them are monuments of high rank, both in terms of age and stylistic value, design solutions and equipment. The remaining ones are characterized by the common historical value of the wooden cultural heritage, which emphasizes the role of the local building tradition and the originality of the log and half-timbered architecture. The article presents seven types of wood and characterizes each of them. All researched monuments are under conservation protection. The article presents theoretical considerations, supplemented by the practical implementation of the area in the Swarzędz community, on the relationship between the organization of urban design in the context of multi-level integration (planning, design) and the emergence of a high-quality urban environment. Both neuroscientists and architects have endeavoured to understand how the experience of architecture works from the standpoint of cognitive functioning. This has been possible thanks to the neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI and discoveries like mirror neurons. These researches, despite their outstanding quality, are difficult to implement for what concerns the practice of architectural design. However, there is a common ground where architectural theory, phenomenology and neuroscience intersect, represented by empathy, embodiment, and emotion. They are the frame of the awareness of space and the counterpart of the visual perception. The main goal of design is to make the living space but to take a meaning, it has to be the “negative” of the human body. This process comes into existence through “old” tools, i.e. the mentioned empathy, embodiment, and emotion. For centuries, these structures had been built at the point of contact between Latin and Eastern cultures. Christian churches of the Eastern rite – wooden Orthodox churches – were the most numerous, right after wooden Latin churches, group of religious buildings in Poland, and are the largest in present-day Ukraine. In comparison to Latin churches, the forms of Orthodox ones are much more diverse. The research conducted by the author in the years 1989-2002 made it possible to identify many of the most valuable orthodox churches in Western Ukraine.
