This paper looks at how university students in central Argentina engage in civic participation through social media. To this end, we converge the theoretical perspective of Lance Bennett (2008) and his model of actualizing citizenship (AC) with Peter Dahlgren’s ideas (2018) regarding online participation and its links to emotions and affect. Following an exploratory qualitative study, which involved 98 semi-structured interviews, we found that those students who actively participate in a digital context do so motivated by causes that personally affect them, such as feminism or environmentalism. At the same time, they are often discouraged from participating in these online arenas by the anger and aggression they find there. As a result, many have chosen alternative modes of participation, refraining from adding their own comments or opinions in favor of hashtivism or the sharing of emojis – a practice we have termed emojivism.","PeriodicalId":41332,"journal":{"name":"Austral Comunicacion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45476075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We adopt an essayistic format, which allows us to probe the tensions and collaborative dynamics that emerge from the coexistence between local institutions and connected society. \u0000The conditions under which the public conversation unfolds are modified in a context where the production and spread of information occupy center stage. There are new mechanisms in place that force us to rethink how political institutions and media organizations manage their channels for expression and discussion. \u0000In what follows, we seek to answer two different questions. First, can political systems substitute a representational dynamic for another one centered on negotiation, doing so without altering their function and importance? And second, can territories embed their practices within the record of connected society? \u0000There is an important distinction to be made between spaces that can survive and coexist within our information society and those that, instead, are excluded from it. This distinction allows us to reflect on the conditions of adaptation. The question is to what degree does the possibility of emergence, for local identities, depend on their capacity to express themselves and network in the context of a communicational practice that can associate global influence with the continued relevance of culture. \u0000The potential to transform the periphery into context, integrating the local through collaborative dynamics, emerges as a field that combines, in its analysis, both culture and communication.","PeriodicalId":41332,"journal":{"name":"Austral Comunicacion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46072201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En Argentina, y en el resto del mundo, las cuentas en Instagram dedicadas a la lectura y recomendacion de libros crecen a ritmo acelerado (lo que dio lugar a una nominalizacion y a la ampliacion del mercado), como tambien la cantidad de usuarios vinculados, lo que resulta en la formacion de comunidades informales que, en ocasiones, trascienden la actividad online. Este trabajo propone un abordaje descriptivo y analitico de cuatro cuentas de Instagram dedicadas a la recomendacion de libros (bookstagrammers) que producen contenidos basados en sus propios acopios de lecturas. Los resultados dan cuenta de un distanciamiento de las rutinas de la critica literaria asociada a la herencia de publicaciones impresas en Argentina, y un acercamiento a herramientas de difusion y consumo cultural que propician la caracterizacion de interacciones desplegadas entre recomendadores, lectores, autores y tambien editores.","PeriodicalId":41332,"journal":{"name":"Austral Comunicacion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43943052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our paper analyzes this regulatory framework in the context of how the El Comercio newspaper in Ecuador covered the protests of October 2019. This period was marked by popular demands and unrest, as civil society rose in opposition to the economic policies of president Lenin Moreno. From October 1 to October 13, Ecuador – like other countries in the region – was torn between dissent, collective action, and social mobilization, on the one hand; and state intimidation, repression, and biased media coverage, on the other. Our survey reveals the stigmas and belittlement that indigenous peoples continue to face as political subjects. This can be seen both in the dispute over public space – an arena crisscrossed by tensions, asymmetries of power, and class conflict – and in the debate over political participation and legitimacy, where the media discourse has woven a discriminatory imaginary against indigenous peoples. In both cases, communication is instrumentalized by traditional media outlets, contributing to differentiation, social exclusion, and the legitimation of accumulation and hegemony.","PeriodicalId":41332,"journal":{"name":"Austral Comunicacion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47501214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It involves a selective process, via which the issue is plucked from a multiplicity of potential realities and goes through a collective definition that legitimizes it upon a competitive arena, where the meaning of all social issues is in dispute. Communication media are crucial in this process, as news outlets define problematic situations and attribute responsibilities. \u0000In this sense, the goal of our paper is to analyze how gender violence has been established as a public issue. Specifically, it aims to evaluate the antecedents that made it possible to define the problematic character of violence against women, understand the critical events (Staggenborg, 1993) that legitimized feminist activism on social media, and analyze media contents regarding abortion. Our work merges perspectives on public issues (Blumer, 1971; Gusfield, 1981, 2014; Pereyra, 2010) with concepts from social movements (Gamson, 1992; Meyer and Staggenborg, 1996; 2015; Snow and Benford, 1988, 1992; Staggenborg, 2001), gender studies (Ciriza, 2007; De Beauvoir, 1949; De Miguel Alvarez, 2003; Wollstonecraft, 1998) and framing (D’Angelo, 2012; Entman, 1993). \u0000Among our results, we highlight the strategies and resources employed by feminist political activism in a patriarchal context (Amoros, 1991; Lagarde, 1996; Millett, 1975). Moreover, we reveal journalistic practices that seek to reinforce injustice against women and attribute responsibility in individual – rather than political or social – terms.","PeriodicalId":41332,"journal":{"name":"Austral Comunicacion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48116867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, most music videos are consumed and shared via online video platforms, which have become a vital source of income for the music business. Of these platforms, YouTube is the most well-known and studied. However, in this paper, we will analyze the music video with the greatest number of “likes” in the Music Video Land channel on Vimeo. e contents of this channel are curated by the authors of the IMVdb (Internet Music Video Database), the most important music video archive and reposi-tory of information on the web. We will carry out a quantitative analysis, combining classic criteria – such as genre, type of music video, relationship between music and image or between image and text – with a look at specific animation and filming techniques. We conclude that concept music videos for dance/electronica or indie tracks, made with advanced filming and image composition techniques, are the most popular among the curators and users of this channel.","PeriodicalId":41332,"journal":{"name":"Austral Comunicacion","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2020-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49254182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
