{"title":"On the Nominative with Infinitive: Notes in the Margins of the Domostroj","authors":"Elena Bratishenko","doi":"10.1080/00806765.2021.1901243","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/00806765.2021.1901243","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT The paper deals with Nom. object construction attested historically in East Slavic and Middle Russian texts, as well as in some modern dialects of the North and North West. Using the 16th-century Domostroj as the starting point for the discussion, the article focusses on the fact that Nom.+Inf. is associated with the legal genre. This presupposes its oral origin and sheds a new light on the possible evolution of this construction. It is argued that the transitive infinitive construction has a non-prototypical status in relation to the finite clause. The non-prototypicality comes from the modal semantics and the irrealis nature of the infinitive and the oblique Dat. subject. The nouns of the feminine *a-stem declension due to their evolution are especially predisposed to the Nom. form in infinitive construction. The opposition between the Nom. and the Acc. in this declension is weak. At the time when the Gen.-Acc. arose as a marker of morphological animacy, *a-stem nouns were pulled in the animacy opposition as well. The Nom. form became a variant of the Acc. for such nouns, by analogy to the Nom.-Acc. syncretism in other declensions and despite the fact that they had a separate Acc. form.","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"67 1","pages":"91 - 111"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00806765.2021.1901243","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47305104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author compares these periphrastic constructions and establishes that the verb učati ‘begin’ differed from the rest of the inchoatives (počati, načati, jati, stati) in that its distribution was functionally restricted and its derivational potential limited (i.e. no verbal nouns, participles, or imperfective verbs derived from this stem). On the 1 I am grateful to the two anonymous reviewers from Scando-Slavica, the editors of the volume for their valuable comments, and Dr. Katie Sykes for her professional English language editing. basis of these features, the author argues that učnu + inf emerged due to contact influence: specifically, the borrowing of a pattern from a Finno-Ugric language spoken in the eastern or northern part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow at the time. It is likely impossible to identify the construction which served as a source for učnu + inf. The author’s hypothesis is further supported by data from contemporary dialects and early attestations in official documents from eastern and northern areas.","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"67 1","pages":"43 - 64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00806765.2021.1901241","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47476022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that Nabokov reconceives and expands his biologically determined binary (letter-with-color) synesthetic associations in a cross- and self-referential system of motifs permeating the whole oeuvre. Consciously controlling his personal experience of his synesthetic mind, Nabokov extrapolates it by adding images and objects and how in this artistic method he attaches symbolic or emblematic notions to letters through color- and object-associations. This complex meaning of letters can be unfolded from supporting codes, metaphors and motifs that trigger adequate contextual interpretations. His prose invites the same meticulous text-decoding methodology demanded by Symbolist and avant-garde prose art that helps to discover a similar segment in the theory of art of these two literary tendencies reputed as antithetical. 1 1 The article was written in the framework of the project “The Border Zone Paradigm: Crossroads in Culture” (2018–2020) funded by the Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research (No. 18–512–23002).","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"66 1","pages":"217 - 231"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00806765.2020.1837006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44441241","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A. Vološin from the war and revolutionary period, both titled “Posev.” The poems are intertextually connected through the parable of the wheat and the weeds from the Gospel of Matthew. When read side by side, the interplay of their structures is discernible, and this, I argue, exposes a hidden signification in the poems. The poems’ symbolical meanings are interconnected also on a deeper level. I show how the poems render Russia’s destiny and future through some of the philosophical ideas and movements that impacted on the Russian Symbolist movement, such as myth-creation, theurgy, the Russian idea and anthroposophy. In particular I focus on the ‘seed metaphor’ that is central in both poems. In this metaphor Rudolf Steiner’s anthroposophical predictions are merged with the messianism of the Russian idea as expressed in its perspective on Russia’s destiny. I argue that the poems, written within the context of the Symbolists’ myth-creating program, can be interpreted as attempts at theurgic art with the aim of inciting a national spiritual revival shaped by the Russian idea and by Steiner’s predictions about the Russians as the “people of Christ,” leading humanity’s spiritual evolution. 1","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"66 1","pages":"247 - 263"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-07-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/00806765.2020.1832916","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44319054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this usage, the antecedent of sebja is the subject of the main clause and not the understood subject of the infinitive. Based on the Russian National Corpus data, restrictions on the long-distance usage of sebja are investigated with reference to the Russian language of the nineteenth century and according to the contemporary norm. I identify three factors (the semantic role of sebja, the availability of the local reading of sebja, the empathy locus) that influence the acceptability of the long-distance usage of the reflexive in modern texts, but which played little, if any, role in the texts of the nineteenth century. The study, conducted within a broader project that involved the micro-diachronic analysis of Russian (its grammar and lexicon), illustrates how investigating the earlier periods of a language’s life may shed light on the properties of that language today. 1 1 Статья подготовлена участником «Программы стажировок работников и аспирантов российских вузов и научных организаций в НИУ ВШЭ» на базе Школы лингвистики факультета гуманитарных наук НИУ ВШЭ на основе данных, полученных в период стажировки.
