In Puškin’s “Snowstorm” such points include the image of a snowstorm, literary clichés, paroemia like you cannot get around your intended on a horse (что суженого конем не объедешь), as well as several specific items, such as a Tula signet ring with a symbolic image of two burning hearts. And, strange as it may seem, the story’s happy ending is anticipated by “a suitable motto” casually mentioned in connection with the Tula signet ring – as a figure of silence without explanation in the text, but easily guessed by Puškin’s contemporaries as a motto accompanying the image of two burning hearts in the Dictionary of symbols and emblems (number 120), re-issued in St Petersburg in 1811. In this article, I offer a reading of the story as a rhetorical amplification of the “suitable motto” engraved on the Tula signet ring: Ut duo unum componant (‘That two may make but one’). {"title":"The Žemaitian Accent Retraction as a Typological Parallel to Olander’s Mobility Law","authors":"V. According to his “mobility law,” pre-Proto-Balto-Slavic words accented on the final mora became phonologically unaccented and automatically received ictus on the first syllable of the phonological word, as in *longós > *ˌlāˀngas > Lith. lángas, CS *lǫ̑gъ. The theory is supported by two typological parallels from contemporary Slavic dialects (Podravina and Zaonežje). However, a parallel can also be found in the Baltic material: the Žemaitian accent retraction, a phenomenon well described by Lithuanian dialectologists, shares some features with Olander’s mobility law and the above-mentioned parallels in Slavic, such as a peculiar phonetic realization of the retracted accent, retraction to the first syllable of the phonological word, partial neutralization of tonal oppositions under the retracted accent, and possible origin due to language contact. It is suggested that the modern inventory of Slavic languages is not a result of accumulation of historically accidental changes and non-changes. Instead, it is argued that macro-areal pressures constrained by the geographic location and the particular language-contact configuration determine the selection of inherited properties for either retention or loss and, subsequently, innovation. The theme is an important one. A lot of what we do as researchers centers around this goal. Where will I study political science? (Which program is the right fit?) How can I understand this research problem? (Is there a good theoretical fit for this topic?) Identifying the appropriate method for answering the research question at hand is an integral component of the early stages of any research project. It is, in other words, about finding the right methodological fit. The right methodological fit may not be obvious. It may also be controversial. Take, for example, the pursuit of data transparency in political science. The ethical and practical ramifications of transparency have been debated widely. This is for good reason. The practice is not always appropriate and therefore should not be universally promoted. Debate is also fundamentally important for methodological praxis. However, this issue of QMMR sets the debate aside to acknowledge, quite simply, that many qualitative scholars are committed to making their research more transparent. This issue offers a set of case studies on how to undertake transparent qualitative research successfully and effectively. These case studies come from transparency practitioners with different epistemological perspectives and who use a variety of methods. Transparency, as the introduction succinctly highlights, is not a “‘one size fits all’ proposition.” The essays, therefore, offer a variety of strategies for fitting the goal of transparency into different types of qualitative research projects. The issue also provides insight on a challenging practical problem associated with spatial analysis. Many of the groups, units, and areas that we study do not easily conform to formally recognized borders. Consequently, it is often very difficult to fit the unit of analysis to the shape files available. The original article included in this issue explores different qualitative and mixed methods techniques that can be used to construct more accurate shape files for the “non-jurisdictional units”—gangs, immigration patterns, religious or ethnic groups, neighborhoods—that so often are the object of our research. The authors ask: How can we better fit the spatial analysis to the research at hand? They explore a variety of techniques that can be used to achieve this goal. I would like to close out my letter with an appeal to our readers, and especially to junior scholars and graduate students: If you have an idea for a symposium or an original article that engages with the use of qualitative and mixed methods, please send it to QMMR! You may not be sure that your idea or article is appropriate—in other words, you may worry about its fit, heh, heh, heh—but I encourage you to send it anyway. QMMR is a great opportunity to circulate methodological innovations in a shorter and therefore more accessible format. It is the outcome of two linguistics panels at the 21 Conference of Scandinavian Slavists that took place in August 2019 at the University of Eastern Finland, Joensuu campus. The papers examine various aspects and possible morphosyntactic consequences of convergence during the development of the Russian language pointing to historical or prehistoric language contacts in the area of Northern East Slavic. While some papers deal with the phenomena that make Russian stand out against the background of even its closest relatives and may thus have been triggered by such contacts, others address broader issues and consider theoretical implications of contact phenomena, the specific contact configurations, and the interplay between internal and external factors in morphosyntactic processes. Andersen’s article addresses the origin and development of definiteness marking in the adjective phrase in Germanic, Baltic and Slavic, and considers three possible hypotheses of prehistoric bilingual language contact in various configurations, as well as areal convergence. The examination of the definite paradigms in all three language families at the earliest historical stages leads Andersen to the conclusion that they are archaisms rather than innovations. In the final analysis, Andersen prefers the idea of direct borrowing of definiteness marking from Germanic. He explains that contacts between Germanic, Baltic and Slavic went on for a very long time, occurring before the invasion of the Huns in 375 A.D. The Slavic and Baltic subordinators (the term he uses for the PIE pronoun *-yo attested in Indo-Iranian) changed into definite markers because of the contacts with East Germanic groups before then, and their spread continued thereafter. One part of Andersen’s article deals with the terminology and methodological issues of language contact. He elaborates on the idea of functional equivalence in language contact and stresses the importance of accounting for innovations on the level of the speaker in order to produce a realistic explanation of the process. In Modern Russian, u + GEN encodes predicative possession, external possessor and the human non-recipient third argument of the verb of ‘removing’, ‘buying’ and ‘asking/requesting’. Based on the analysis of the Primary Chronicle and the Old East Slavic and the Middle Russian Subcorpora of the Russian National Corpus, the present research aims to demonstrate that the roles of u + GEN should be considered within the Ablative-Locative spread in which u + GEN superseded the locative role and at the same time retained the ablative role. According to the Corpora, u + GEN was already used as a human non-recipient 3rd argument of the mentioned three groups of verbs in Old East Slavic and the entrenchment of this encoding was prominent in Middle Russian. Its main focus is on the development of Adjective-Phrase Definiteness marking in Germanic, Baltic, and Slavic (§1). Traditionally this commonality among the three language groups has been considered a coincidence. But in recent years several comparativists have proclaimed it a result of areal convergence. This is an attractive idea for several reasons (§2), not least because Definiteness is a category that easily spreads through language contact, as the Standard Average European development shows (§3). The paper addresses the question how Adjective-Phrase Definiteness marking might have arisen or been propagated among these three language groups, and several hypothetical contact scenarios are worked out in detail (§§4–5). An excursus highlights the conceptual apparatus applied here and some outstanding issues (§6). Although the ideological underpinnings of that particular society have been relegated to history, new ideological winds can arise at any place and time, bending language to its own ends. Now as then, humanity can reveal itself in the kind of spontaneous, unexpected meetings captured in Dobyčin’s fiction. Andersson’s study resists reductive interpretations, inviting instead new ones: “I have opened up the author’s work but not solved its riddle” (305).
