This approach has been inspired by methods already consolidated in the literature and widespread worldwide such as the Bebras tasks and CS-Unplugged. This paper describes two of these smart toys, their design process, some evaluation’s results, and finally feedback and reviews from buyers. The main activities proposed by these toys leverage visual coding through small colored physical items (e.g., pegs and balls) to deliver the unplugged activities to young users.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116283720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Likewise, audio-visual interfaces can support human data analysts better than interfaces relying on just one sense. While the research communities of sonification and visualization have both carried out extensive research on the auditory and visual representation of data, comparatively little is known about their systematic and complementary combination for data analysis. After two workshops at Audio Mostly 2021 and IEEE VIS, this 3rd workshop on audio-visual analytics continues building a community of researchers interested in combining visualization and sonification.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128770753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is important because a well-developed automatic recognition system could facilitate interventions and moderation in social VR without requiring real-time parental supervision. To initially explore this question of recognition, we prototyped a small set of 3D stimuli representing a bullying scenario and explored in a small formative preliminary study what human observers perceived from the stimuli. Future work is required with different problematic situations in social VR and evaluations with more participants before developing an automatic recognition system.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121225797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper transposes ISL in the context of menu design learnability. Our analysis of menu patterns in various applications from the 80s to today reveals a consistent linear pattern with command names on the left and keyboard shortcut cues aligned on the right. We then develop a design space of menu patterns by manipulating two factors of ISL theory, spatial proximity (distance) and relative positioning between commands and shortcut cues. We empirically compare four menu patterns of this design space on whether they can improve keyboard shortcut adoption through two controlled experiments. Results did not capture clear effects among the menu patterns, suggesting that ISL in the context of HCI might involve more complex factors than initially anticipated, such as the time the users are exposed to the menu pattern. We reflect on the challenges in applying theories from cognitive science to HCI and hope that our systematic methodology and experiment designs will serve as a basis for encouraging more studies in the area.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122850678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a user-centered analysis of the effectiveness of DeepFakes for obfuscation using synthetically generated faces, and compare it with state-of-the-art obfuscation methods: blurring, masking, pixelating, and replacement with avatars. For this, we conducted an online survey (N=110) and found that DeepFake obfuscation is a viable alternative to state-of-the-art obfuscation methods; it is as effective as masking and avatar obfuscation in concealing the identities of individuals in photos. At the same time, DeepFakes blend well with surroundings and are as aesthetically pleasing as blurring and pixelating. We discuss how DeepFake obfuscation can enhance privacy protection without negatively impacting the photo’s aesthetics.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123654470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed solution uses elements of gamification such as rankings, scores, prizes, and levels to encourage and engage the driver in an urban context. The score, in terms of eco-sustainable driving, is calculated by considering vehicle speed, acceleration and braking parameters during the driving session. The application also provides real-time feedback in order to help the driver improve his/her driving style. Whenever the application detects a sudden change in speed, known as an unsustainable behavior, it will warn the user so as to let him/her correct the driving style. Our solution is oriented to assist people in eco-sustainable driving while preventing them from loss of interest and from reverting to his/her former bad driving behaviors.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114410322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Parallel coordinates plots and heatmaps are reference visualizations for individual biclusters. Both have been object of improvements over time, with a special emphasis on heatmaps, commonly used in gene expression analysis. However, the emphasis is solely placed on the corresponding subspace, preventing an assessment of biclusters’ significance against global regularities. This work proposes an improvement on bicluster visualization by disruptively extending parallel coordinates representations with the means to compare the local bicluster against the remaining dataset instances helping in the contextualization of a pattern in the broader picture of an entire dataset. The proposed solution is the first able to deal with mixed data types and is independent from the underlying biclustering or pattern mining algorithm. Results in different data domains show the utility of the proposed visualization, especially in primary phases where visual inspection of biclusters is used.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129619566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
