This technique relies on a redirection function which determines the virtual hand position depending on the physical hand position. In this paper, we extend the design space of the Hand-redirection technique by generalizing this redirection function. A user study compares 6 redirection functions. Our results suggest that the redirection function does not deteriorate the illusion offering more flexibility and control to designer over the hand trajectory and avoid collisions.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129759558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, it is essential to employ effective threat mitigation strategies, such as securely configuring devices. We investigate how users can be motivated to do so. To foster secure actions, we designed two types of nudges based on the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT): one with low and one with high level of detail. As such, our nudges particularly target users’ threat appraisal (including perceived severity and likelihood of threats) and self-efficacy to take action. In a randomized online experiment (N = 210), we simulated a smart home setup procedure. Participants chose significantly more secure configurations when being provided with detailed nudges, and indicated higher perceived threat and coping appraisal (i.e., higher protection motivation) after the experiment. Based on our results, we discuss the design and deployment of nudges for (future) smart home setup procedures. Our work can help to a) increase users’ threat awareness in general, and b) motivate users to take actions such as securely configuring their devices.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129880114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, people with ASD face complications in everyday life, from interacting with other persons to being autonomous in the most ordinary daily tasks. To overcome these limitations and improve their quality of life, we developed 5A. 5A exploits cutting-edge technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Conversational Agents (CA), combining smartphones and wearable headsets to offer new forms of intervention to persons with ASD. Virtual reality experiences enable learning common tasks, such as using public transport, through simulation in a safe environment. When people are in similar real-life situations, AR can help them generalize the skills they have learned in VR by overlaying interactive media assets on top of the view of the physical world around them. A customizable conversational assistant provides individualized prompts and feedback in both VR and AR to provide maximum user support.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126389035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Today, though, most chatbots are not integrated into the application in which they are placed, but only superimposed, with no communication between the conversational and the graphical interface. We propose Multi-modal Conversational Troubleshooting Kit (MCTK), a Python package to easily integrate a conversational agent for troubleshooting in web applications. MCTK is multi-modal: once the system recognizes the problem the user is encountering, the textual solution in the chat is coupled with visual hints in the GUI. On top of that, MCTK is easy to configure and offers separation of concerns: dialogue designers can work on the conversation without the necessity of modifying the code, and vice versa.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133605260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been demonstrated that involving users can often significantly improve clustering quality. We propose a novel system that combines deep language models (SBERT, Infer-Sent, and Universal Sentence Encoder) with interactive clustering enabling users to steer the clustering algorithm towards results meaningful to them through interactive document and cluster visualizations. Our system is comprised of several visual components, each of which allows the user to apply their domain knowledge to the clustering process. The use of deep language models for representing sentences addresses the vocabulary mismatch problem that affects bag-of-words representations of documents. We employ sentence embeddings to obtain document embeddings as an input to the clustering algorithm, a modified version of K-means. We conduct a two-stage evaluation of our system. First, we evaluate the proposed clustering models in automatic clustering of various publicly available data sets, and we confirm that they are competitive with state-of-the-art. Second, we conduct a formal expert study of a specific data set consisting of our research group’s readings (research papers in machine learning, text mining, and natural language processing) over several years. The domain expert is a graduate student whose thesis is in the above field. The expert study concludes that our system is significantly better at producing meaningful clusters than the baseline system (Vis-Kt).","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131073971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So far, research has focused on technical issues and interaction concepts by pushing and pulling the surface of such displays. We report a study with 24 participants that investigates the feasibility and limitations of interaction with 6 to 21 layers. We measured completion times and error rates for reaching and holding specific target layers and observed performed gestures. Our findings show that solution time increases with more layers while precision is maintained with a mean success rate of holding a layer of 70 %, even when using up to 21 layers. User experience measurements show that hedonic qualities of the interaction were rated higher than pragmatic qualities. Our investigation proves the general feasibility of using layer-based interaction with an elastic display and provides guidelines on the limitations.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122709458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When it comes to commensality, researchers have started working on computational models of food and eating-related activities recognition. The growing research area known as Digital Commensality, has focused on meals shared online, for instance, through videochat. However, to investigate this topic, traditional data-sets recorded in laboratory settings may not be the best option in terms of ecological validity. Covid-19 restrictions and lock-downs have increased in online gatherings, with many people becoming used to the idea of sharing meals online. Following this trend, we propose the concept of collecting data by recording online interactions and discuss the challenges related to this methodology. We illustrate our approach in creating the first Digital Commensality data-set, containing recordings of food-related social interactions collected online during the Covid-19 outbreak.","PeriodicalId":412533,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2022 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126495499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
