In the 2nd century, Galen of Pergamon wrote De simplicium medicinalum facultatibus, a work on simple drugs among which we find treatments still used today to heal rashes, eczema, abscesses, etc. This treatise was translated into Syriac, Arabic and Latin. This last version, the Latin one carried out by Gerard of Cremone in the 12th century, arouses the greatest interest, since it includes the recipes described by Galen, but with the contributions of the Greeks, Syrians and Arabs, not only in its content, but in the technical lexicon used. The aim of this work is to present, through Gerard’s De simplicibus medicinis, the Latin translation of Galen’s treatise, the vision that the Western Late Middle Ages had of the natural medicine of Galen to heal skin disorders, and the (strongly Arabized) medical vocabulary used in that translation. Los problemas cutáneos provocados por factores internos o externos al cuerpo humano han sido motivo de estudio desde la Antigüedad. En el siglo II Galeno de Pérgamo redactó el De simplicium medicamentorum facultatibus, una obra sobre remedios simples entre los cuales encontramos tratamientos utilizados todavía hoy en día para curar erupciones, eccemas, abscesos, etc. Este tratado fue traducido al siríaco, árabe y latín, y es esta última, la versión latina realizada desde el árabe por Gerardo de Cremona en el siglo XII, la que despierta mayor interés, ya que recoge las recetas descritas por Galeno, pero con las aportaciones de los griegos, sirios y árabes, no solo en su contenido, sino en el léxico técnico empleado. Previously, the definitions published in various dictionaries and other works are reviewed, as well as the etymologies proposed from the Modern Age to the present day. The phonetic evolution of the term from its Latin etymon is also detailed. Finally, the meaning of the term is interpreted in the light of its etymology and in relation to various written testimonies and to the variants of this culinary preparation that exist today. En este artículo se desvela la etimología del término español gazpacho, que procede del adjetivo latino caccabaceus, derivado de caccabus (‘caldero’) y aplicado a un tipo de pan. Previamente, se revisan las definiciones publicadas en diversos diccionarios y otras obras, y las etimologías propuestas desde la Edad Moderna hasta la actualidad. Se detalla también la evolución fonética experimentada por el término desde su étimo latino. Virgil’s borrowing from lore about the Libyan queen Lamia and her transformation into a nightmarish bogey serves to highlight Dido’s metamorphosis from responsible ruler of her people to an angry, embittered enemy of Aeneas and his descendants. Further, Virgil may allude specifically to the shapeshifting nature of these mythological monsters in Mercury’s misogynistic warning to Aeneas about the eminent mutability of women. Una fuente olvidada, posible inspiración para Virgilio en la composición de su reina cartaginesa Dido, es la tríada de monstruos folclóricos asesinos de niños conocida por las citas de la comedia aristofánica. El hecho de que Virgilio recurra a la tradición popular sobre la reina libia Lamia y su transformación en un monstruo de pesadilla resalta la metamorfosis de Dido desde gobernante responsable de su pueblo a enemiga de Eneas y sus descendientes, furiosa y amargada. X he makes human sacrifices and when he kills Turnus at the end of the poem, he defines it as a sacrifice. The contrast between the sacred value of immolation and the horror of human sacrifice is surprising and deserves an analysis. Il verbo immolare ha solo tre occorrenze nell’intera opera virgiliana, tutte nell’Eneide e tutte riferite ad Enea e ai sacrifici umani che egli compie nell’ira per la morte di Pallante nel l. X e all’uccisione di Turno nel finale del poema, che egli definisce come un sacrificio. Jerue","doi":"10.6018/myrtia.588061","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6018/myrtia.588061","url":null,"abstract":"Through a comparison of how Dionysius and Livy depict the rape of the Sabine women and Rome’s subsequent wars with her Latin neighbors and Titus Tatius’ Sabines, this paper analyzes how these two historians understand the early expansion of Roman imperium. While previous scholarship has argued that Livy presents a rather sanitized version of the integration of the Sabine women into Roman society, less attention has been paid to Dionysius’ depiction of this process. A comparison with Livy shows how instead of conceiving of the process as easy or seamless, Dionysius includes a steady stream of details that point to the difficulty and messiness of this process. Particular attention is paid to the depiction of violence, childbirth and political integration to highlight the meaningful differences between the each historian’s telling of Rome’s nascent empire. Esta contribución analiza el modo en que Dionisio y Tito Livio entienden la temprana expansión del imperium romano a través del estudio de los pasajes relativos al rapto de las Sabinas y a las consiguientes guerras con los pueblos vecinos, tanto los latinos como los sabinos de Tito Tacio. Si bien es cierto que la historiografía tradicional ha defendido que Livio ofrece una versión edulcorada de la integración de las sabinas en la sociedad romana, también lo es que menos atención ha recibido el relato de Dionisio de Halicarnaso, quien presenta un panorama más complejo. Así, al compararlo con Livio, se demuestra cómo el heleno está lejos de concebir este proceso como fácil o ininterrumpido, incluyendo un flujo continuo de detalles que apuntan a la gran dificultad y al caos imperante en el mismo. En este trabajo se ha tomado en consideración un breve pasaje de la Sphortias (2.674-733), el poema dedicado a Francesco Sforza (23 de julio de 1401 – 8 de marzo de 1466), en que se presenta la descripción de una tempestad, topos literario propio de la épica. A partir de este exemplum, se ha intentado pues aclarar los mecanismos de la construcción narrativa de la obra que, aun hundiendo sus raíces en el mare magnum de la tradición épica, parecería presentar, quizás no en vano, interesantes innovacione L’instancabile estro creativo del Filelfo (25 luglio 1398 – 13 luglio 1481) e la sua spregiudicata capacità di soddisfare con le sue lodi il desiderio di gloria dei potenti non lo trattennero dal confrontarsi anche con il genere epico. In questo lavoro è stato preso in considerazione un breve passo tratto dalla Sphortias (2.674-733), il poema dedicato a Francesco Sforza (23 luglio 1401 – 8 marzo 1466), in cui viene presentata la descrizione di una tempesta, topos letterario proprio dell’epica. This generated sometimes intense public debates between supporters and detractors of the newspaper. Two opposing figures stand out in the controversy: José Mariano Beristáin, the newspaper’s author, and Francisco Guerra, a professor of Greek. In this article the use of references to the Greco-Latin world and culture as a dialectical weapon is analyzed in the writings for or against these literary criticisms. The most relevant allusions to mythology, history or any other aspect of the classical world will be identified. It wil be studied how they have been adapted to a new context of erudite diatribe and wit. El Diario Pinciano (1787-1788), escrito por el erudito José Mariano Beristáin y Souza, contenía una sección literaria en la que se criticaban las dedicatorias en latín de los actos académicos. Esto generó en ocasiones intensos debates públicos entre los partidarios y detractores del periódico. Destacan en la polémica dos figuras enfrentadas: José Mariano Beristáin, el autor del periódico, y Francisco Guerra, catedrático de Griego. En este artículo se analiza el uso de las referencias al mundo y la cultura grecolatinas como arma dialéctica en los escritos a favor o en contra de estas críticas literarias.
