Etimología de gazpacho (caccabaceus):

Abstract

This article reveals the etymology of the Spanish term “gazpacho”, which comes from the Latin adjective caccabaceus, derived from caccabus (‘cauldron’) and applied to a type of bread. Previously, the definitions published in various dictionaries and other works are reviewed, as well as the etymologies proposed from the Modern Age to the present day. The phonetic evolution of the term from its Latin etymon is also detailed. Finally, the meaning of the term is interpreted in the light of its etymology and in relation to various written testimonies and to the variants of this culinary preparation that exist today. En este artículo se desvela la etimología del término español gazpacho, que procede del adjetivo latino caccabaceus, derivado de caccabus (‘caldero’) y aplicado a un tipo de pan. Previamente, se revisan las definiciones publicadas en diversos diccionarios y otras obras, y las etimologías propuestas desde la Edad Moderna hasta la actualidad. Se detalla también la evolución fonética experimentada por el término desde su étimo latino. Por último, se interpreta el significado del término a la luz de su etimología y en relación con diversos testimonios escritos y con las variantes existentes en la actualidad de esta preparación culinaria.
