S.Khomyakov, I.V.Kireevsky, Yu.F. Samarin, and other writers in the sphere of Dostoevsky’s interests in 1850–1870: A.I.Herzen, A.A.Grigoriev, N.N. Strakhov, Archimandrite Theodore (A.M.Bukharev), and others. The author traces the conditions under which the magazine Vremya was created and explores why the ideology of “pochvennichestvo” was unclear to the Russian public, including some of its supporters (N.N. Strakhov). The author assumes that this idea can be traced from early letters to brother Mikhail (1838), to the “Pushkin Speech” (1880), and to the novel The Brothers Karamazov. The author criticizes claims about a new unwritten novel dedicated to the further path of Alyosha Karamazov, where, according to the “Diary” of A. S. Suvorin, he would have become a revolutionary. The author concludes that there is a deep unity linking Dostoevsky’s ideal of “pochvennichestvo” and the root idea of his literary work, which can be defined as mental searching for an answer to the question of the meaning of life, with the assertion of a direct dependence between moral state of a human being and his religious — ontological position.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73614477","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The common ground of the two authors’ literary philosophy is emphasized, as well as their common themes and the similarity of ideas, which is determined both by the personal experience and the ways of mankind’s evolution in the first half of the 20th century. The analysis shows that the existence improvement concept lies at the bottom of the studied works. Though this concept has reached the ultimate stage of absurdity where the initially positive ideas to build a house for the country’s proletarians (Platonov) and to save the mankind in the space (Martinson) lead to a negative result: death. While the Platonov’s novel is well-known for a wide audience, the poem of the Swedish author is a revelation for the majority as an example of post-apocalyptic dystopia written in an elegant poetic language. The present article introduces what these two literary works have in common in relation to genre (both the poem and the novel represent failed utopia — dystopia) and architectonics. The story lines are based on such motifs as motif of traveling, motif of searching for happiness and truth, and motif of death, a key-motif for both literary works.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"114 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79335144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many of the pretexts of this long poem have been studied, various reminiscences and allusive layers have been revealed, and mythopoetic motives have been analyzed. Readers and researchers have shown great interest in the poem’s unusual discursive structure and the orientation of its language towards the Church Slavonic Bible and Old Russian literature, as well as the form of rhythmic prose chosen by the author, reminiscent of old French verses. However, the pattern of such prose can be found closer, in Russian literature of the 19th century. In a similar way, the narration is organized in one of the works of a writer close to the Slavophiles, Kokhanovskaya (Nadezhda S. Sokhanskaya, 1823–1884). Upon careful reading, her story “Roy-Theodosii Savvich during His Retirement” (1864) turns out, to be close to Vyacheslav Ivanov’s legend, not only rhythmically and phonetically, but also in terms of the system of images performing similar functions in both works. The coincidence of these two factors allows one to consider this half-forgotten work as one of the possible sources of the symbolist writer’s poem.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85514482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The changing attitude towards symphonic and vocal music from the middle of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century and the spread of musical and aesthetic views in related fields of science had a significant impact on Klopstock’s work. The complex multidimensional musicality of his works was misunderstood by his contemporaries who perceived only the superficial layer of Klopstock’s poetry, the plot. Researchers started studying the compositional affinity of his religious epic poem, the Messias, and the symphony only in the 20th century; they suggested the concept of a plot of feelings as opposed to the usual interpretation of the plot as a chain of events. The structural similarity of Klopstock’s epic to the symphony and the use of dissonance are undoubtedly manifestations of musicality. However, we can point out a deeper sign of musicality which is the German poet’s desire not to portray nature in his odes and hymns, but to convey an attitude towards it. Franz Schubert managed to reflect the rich palette of feelings contained in Klopstock’s poetry; today Schubert’s songs based on Klopstock’s poems are still a part of the vocal repertoire. Schubert succeeded in overcoming the obvious difficulties of Klopstock’s poetry, namely the lack of rhyme and regular syllable stress.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85877394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author believes that the last should avoid introducing into the metatext additional meanings that are not obligatory for understanding, since such misreadings lead to poetic interpretation of the text-object. The scholarly validity of the commentary can be achieved, firstly, by applying the idea of total commentary proposed by Alexandre Chudakov, and secondly, by the classification of comments depending on the types of misunderstanding of the literary text, developed Yuri I.Levin. The commentary is dialogic, it contains replies to possible questions about the meaning of textual elements, and awareness of the degree and nature of interpreter’s own or someone else’s erroneous understanding allows him or her to formulate the tasks of commenting in a new way. Developing Levin’s system, the author of the article suggests two types of misunderstanding, which correspond to certain forms of commenting. Firstly, this is a pun misunderstanding — a special kind of factual errors that occur when a word or thing is transferred to a different (modern) context. An example of eliminating this kind of error in interpretation of Chekhov’s story Thick and Thin with the help of “total commentary” allows to offer a fundamentally different approach to the genre nature of the text and the main event of it: the story turns out to be a novella, and its main event is an incredible incident, possible only with the direct intervention of the supreme power. Second type of misunderstanding is a semantic ellipsis, which is the omission of some thing or its deliberately careless mention as unimportant, although filling of such a gap can change the perception of the text. The examples of Chekhov’s stories Trouble and Student demonstrate how useful may be attention to seemingly very small and even superfluous details.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90340740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of them were already introduced into scientific circulation, the other are published here for the first time. In contrast to the graffiti of the 12th–15th centuries from other churches of medieval Novgorod, a significant part of the graffiti in the Church of the Dormition-in-Volotovo consists of 2 groups of inscriptions: liturgical quotes and personal names (apart from the standard prayer formulas “Lord help (save, forgive)” and autographs “X wrote”). The main attention in the report is paid to the personal names, the lists of which completely cover the part of the wall to the right of the entrance to the altar and the north-eastern face of the north-eastern pillar. The graffiti are made in different handwriting, but all of them are palaeographically dated to the beginning and the first half of the 15th century. The article publishes Christian names, of which only 6 belong to women. Personal names are presented in the form of Acc. sing., which suggests their use as part of the prayer formula for health or for the repose of “Lord save, have mercy + Acc. Sing.” Many Christian names are represented in the popular vocalization, which is also typical for birch bark letters. The material presented and analyzed in the article is part of the graffiti corpus prepared by the author from the Novgorodian Church of the Dormition-in-Volotovo.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"573 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76777916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A strong case is made for what the article proposes to consider reconstructive reading as the basic method for approaching a literary text in order to translate it. We analyze the Russian translation of O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi, which has become part of the canon in Russian culture. The article defines and exemplifies the mechanism of reconstructive reading, demonstrating how identifying the points of contrast between certain phrases in the text and the relevant value frames allows to recreate the patterns of meaning in the narrative. This serves as the basis for understanding the function of every word in the text and for clearly experiencing the fullness of its expressive potential. Moreover, the article demonstrates how the translation of O. Henry’s story loses any meaningful connection to the original, distorting and trivializing it. The reason for this failure is identified as the lack of attention to the key elements in the original text, which establish the contrasting relationship between the text and the clearly marked value frames. We stress that the well-established mistranslation of the original text has forced Russian literary critics to come up with erroneous interpretations of that short story. The conclusion points out the significance of practicing reconstructive reading as a prerequisite for translation in order to avoid creating translations that may create misunderstandings between cultures.This article discusses the problem of functional equivalence in a literary text translation. The phenomenon of the diatribe will first be briefly introduced, both as regards its Greek origins as well as its transfer into Old Church Slavonic and its further development in Orthodox Slavic writings from the 10th century onwards. Next, some attention will be devoted to Iosif ’s background and the context of P. Some of the main features of the diatribe in P will then be presented and their use will be compared to Slavic translated texts as well as their Greek originals. It will be shown that the features of the diatribe in P.occur in an attenuated form and thus can be considered a residue of the diatribal mode of discourse organization. At the same time, some of these features clearly serve a pragmatic purpose of subjectivizing the discourse. This latter issue will be discussed on the basis of terminology developed by Fr. Récanati (1997), H.Clark (1996) and others.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90353429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Significant differences were found between the two syntactic context conditions. In enumeration contexts, both local minima and maxima associated with the prominent syllable had a significantly earlier and more stable alignment, and the slope of the rise between the tonal targets was steeper. In addition, the effect of the speech rate on these acoustic features was tested. The effects of fast and slow reading turned out to be asymmetric. In line with the segmental anchoring hypothesis, no significant effect of fast speech rate on alignment and pitch range was found; only the effect on slope was significant. Conversely, while reading the texts intentionally slowly the participants consistently used melodies with later alignment of local minima and maxima and larger pitch range. On the one hand, these data can be indicative of the interchangeability of stylistically marked pitch accent postulated for the incompleteness contexts in traditional descriptions of Russian intonation. On the other hand, this interpretation cannot account for the fact that the rightward shift in alignment in slow tempo was also found in the contrastive question condition.","PeriodicalId":41205,"journal":{"name":"Vestnik Sankt-Peterburgskogo Universiteta-Yazyk i Literatura","volume":"14 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74392419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The language means used for the realization of cognitive models referring to the spheres of entertainment, cooking and eating as well as the models referring to the negative aspects of food representation in Russian media discourse are investigated. The article also studies the connection between the realization of cognitive models and journalists’ pragmatic goals aimed at a positive or negative representation of food in media discourse. The cognitive models’ dominant components are analyzed. The promotion of such components as participants, food and drink, place, entertainment, characteristics of the object (food), action, consequences, etc., is driven by journalists’ pragmatic goals aimed at drawing attention to particular dishes or preventing the negative consequences of consuming a certain food. Filling the components of the cognitive model with particular contents by means of language units results in achieving the journalist’s goal. The article also investigates the connection between various spheres of human life established by the representation of food. The authors refer to the peculiarities of the realization of the cognitive model “Food as a source of danger”.
