One, the Foliage Penetration Advanced Technology Demonstration, will be installed on an Army C-12 and eventually the Global Hawk Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. It is designed to detect stationary military vehicles, which are camouflaged or hidden in forests and tree-lines. It employs a VHF SAR for screening and a UHF SAR for rejection of false-alarms. The second is an interferometric SAR for topographic terrain mapping. It operates on a business jet simultaneously with an X-band SAR. Together the two obtain high-quality imagery and terrain height of the ground even under foliage. The paper describes the phenomenology of foliage penetration, ultra-wideband SAR, and the different design issues associated with target detection and terrain mapping.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. {"title":"Airborne array aperture UWB UHF radar-motivation and system considerations","authors":"H. Hellsten, L. It argues that this functionality may be one mode in a multi-function UWB UHF system, which jointly possesses the capabilities for air target MTI and high resolution FOPEN SAR. The radar platform may be a UAV or an aircraft, whereas it is proposed to use the push boom type of antenna mounting previously adopted with advantage for the CARABAS II UWB VHF SAR. Presently the push booms will hold a set of UWB UHF antenna elements. The paper relates GMTI to SAR, extended from imaging stationary ground to the 4-parameter set of targets in linear and uniform motion relative to ground. It is recognised that this extended imaging problem only depends on one new parameter viz. the SAR focusing velocity. The required signal processing may be tackled in an efficient manner by a hierarchical scheme based on iteratively merging subapertures and increasing the resolution. Rejection of stationary clutter and detection occurs on all the levels of increasing the resolution. The paper also provides a brief presentation of the Swedish FOA efforts to produce an experimental demonstrator of this multi-function radar system.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. The key feature of the Rotman lens is that it allows multiple simultaneous beams to be transmitted in different directions and at different frequencies. Since the Rotman lens is a true time-delay element, it is inherently wide-bandwidth and other components of the antenna were designed to support a bandwidth of 8 to 18 GHz. In the ESA, the input signal to the Rotman lens is controlled by a PIN diode beamswitching network, and the outputs are fed to a two-dimensional array of Vivaldi notches. The ESA performance is characterized, and the results is presented.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. Radar into the Next Millennium (Cat. FOPEN (foliage penetration) radar has been used to penetrate tree canopies in order to detect objects. On the other hand, spectral differences between targets and backgrounds are used in HSI systems. Both SAR and HSI systems may suffer substantial false alarm and leakage rates due to respective background clutter. It is expected that a combined SAR and HSI system will greatly enhance the detection and identification performance. Based on the features derived from SAR and HSI data, a fusion approach has been established. Data sets of SAR and HSI over a common area from the Dixie data collection (May 1997 from Vicksberg, Mississippi) are used in this paper to demonstrate the fusion approach. The site contained several camouflage nets and vehicles. One of the vehicles was covered under a camouflage net. Target detection is shown for each data set based on RCS (radar cross section) and spectral features. In particular, a transformation of the spectral measurements into principal components was used to reduce the dimensionality of HSI data as well as to facilitate spectral feature extraction and material identification. SAR and HSI detections were subsequently combined via image coregistration. The fusion results showed that false detections in the SAR image were greatly reduced with background characterization of trees from HSI and target detections were confirmed with detection of camouflage nets and material identification of vehicle paints.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. In this paper, the characteristic of the algorithm is analyzed, and the relationship of three algorithms, range Doppler algorithm (RDA), MTRC compensation algorithm (MTRCCA) and polar formation algorithm (PFA), is given based on the analysis of the echo. The results show that MTRCCA is weakly dependent on the model and is suitable in ISAR imaging.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. Effects of receiver filtering on hot clutter mitigation 接收机滤波对热杂波抑制的影响

This signal is then filtered (analog and digitally) prior to entering the adaptive processor. Among other effects, this band limits the signal and affects the correlation function of the jammer waveform as seen by the adaptive architecture. We illustrate some of the effects of varying receiver filters on the mitigation of terrain-scattered interference (otherwise known as hot clutter). We examine five different correlation functions, two of which are band limited, and three of which are limited in time. The results demonstrate that if the correlation function of this waveform has a finite time extent, then the ability to mitigate hot clutter is significantly reduced. This demonstrates that scatterers of long relative time delay (resulting in a small amount of correlation) still contribute significantly to hot clutter cancellation. This result may, for example, impact the choice of pulse compression used in a radar system, since pulse compression prior to adaptive processing will impact the resulting correlation function.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. The hub echo is modeled in the frequency domain as band noise spread around the Doppler frequency of the helicopter fuselage backscatter. A detection algorithm is proposed to distinguish, with relatively short available data batch, between the fuselage spectral line and those being hub spectrum components, referred to as the hub spectrum \"shelf\". FFT based procedures usually show too low frequency resolution and the hub echo may go undetected. The incorporation of a theoretical model of the rotor hub backscatter into the detection algorithm has led to a parametric detector of much higher frequency resolution, which can be effective in detection and classification of helicopter echoes in radar systems with inherent short time-on-target. The results of Monte-Carlo simulation of both FFT-based and parametric detector are also presented.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference.
