A generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector is derived, that is able to exploit the polarimetric characteristics of the received radar echoes to improve the detection performance. The proposed polarimetric detector is shown to have constant false alarm rate (CFAR) when operating against compound-Gaussian clutter with unknown parameters. Its performance is fully characterized by both theoretical analysis and simulation. Moreover, the application to recorded radar data demonstrates the performance improvement achievable in practice.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. The simulation result indicates that this dipole is not only useful for eliminating scanning blindness to achieve a wide angle-scanning, but also for improving the reflection coefficient for wide-band matching. By use of the dipole in a 7/spl times/7 array plane and an 8/spl times/10 active phased array, very good wide-band consistencies are shown experimentally.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. We present an exact expression for the normalized SINR as a function of random variables with known distributions and then, using a Taylor series expansion, we present approximate expressions for the mean and variance of the normalized SINR. We note that under the assumption of uncorrelated inputs and known correlation matrices that the dual channel matched filter system is equivalent to a single channel matched filter designed to process both input signals. Further, we show that when estimated correlation matrices are used in place of the true correlation matrices the dual channel matched filter system achieves nearly the same normalized SINR performance as the single channel matched filter system with half the secondary data. These results suggest that, with the proper preprocessing to decorrelate the input signal, a single channel matched filter system can be replaced by a dual channel matched filter system of smaller size, leading to a reduction in computational cost and secondary data requirements.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. The measurement radar used subnanosecond transmit pulses (0.15 ns, 3 dB pulsewidth) at a 9 GHz center frequency to achieve resolutions as fine as 2 cm in the range dimension. This resolution was sufficient to fully resolve direct and multipath (both single and double bounce) contributions to the signal reflecting from a tower mounted retro reflector. The geometry presented a nominal 3 degree grazing angle for forward scatter. Dual polarized data examples, taken for a variety of wind conditions, highlight changes in the magnitude and the location of the scatter components with time.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. The family of spectral shapes obtained, denoted K-PSD, shows an exponential decay of the spectral tails that gives a good fit to the spectra observed in MIT-LL ground clutter measurements. The exponential shape provides tails that decay much faster than in the usual power-law model, but that remain wider than in the Gaussian model. The derived model provides a theoretical basis for the spectral shapes observed in the measurements.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. The present solid state transmitters operate on L-band or lower in general. With the development of microwave solid state power transistor, the S-band solid state transistor with output power up to 100 W has been developed, which makes it possible to develop the S-band solid state transmitter with kilowatt output peak power. This paper presents the development of a 16 kW solid slate transmitter for modern surveillance, air traffic control radar applications. It operates at 2.7-2.9 GHz, with a pulse width of 100 /spl mu/s and 10% duty cycle. Its 16 kW peak power is achieved by combining thirty-two 600 W high power amplifier modules using a low loss combiner.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. CFAR at the end of instrumented range CFAR在测量范围的末端

{"title":"CFAR at the end of instrumented range","authors":"Y. F. Lok","doi":"10.1109/NRC.1999.767332","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NRC.1999.767332","url":null,"abstract":"The constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection method is commonly used in radar signal processing systems and is described in textbooks. However, there is an implementation problem at the beginning and the end of range samples where data within one of the sliding average windows is missing. The common implementation method is to assume the values in the missing window to be zeroes. That causes the false alarm rate to increase at the two ends of the range samples. The problem is not normally noticeable unless weather clutter exists in those regions. As a result, abnormal false alarm rates will appear as \"weather breakthrough\". In this paper, two approaches are described as solutions to the problem of the common method. The clamped threshold algorithm freezes the last valid threshold and extends it to the range boundary. The second approach allows the sliding window to shrink as it is limited by the range boundary. The two new approaches and the common method are evaluated with real data and simulations. The results indicate that the clamped threshold algorithm is the preferred approach.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. One such system is the M56 multispectral smoke generator, which presently operates in the visible and infrared (IR) portions of the spectrum; a millimeter wave (MMW) module is in development by ERDEC to extend the M56 spectral range. This paper documents preliminary results of a field demonstration test of the M56 MMW module, conducted during the summer of 1998 at Eglin Air Force Base (AFB). AN MMW instrumentation radar developed by the U.S. Air Force 46/sup th/ Test Wing, MMW Division was modified to simulate the scan pattern and radar parameters of a tactical battlefield surveillance radar system. A test grid was populated with both stationary and moving tactical targets, and the radar scanned the grid to simulate a surveillance radar in operation. Once a realistic tactical engagement scenario was developed, MMW aerosols were deployed to demonstrate the impact such aerosols could have on radar detection and classification performance.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. Then, appropriate techniques, which enable storage requirements and transmission bit stream reduction, have to be developed. In this paper we present a new approach for SAR raw data compression, based on a low bit rate transform coding technique, using wavelet transform and a non-uniform quantizer. Numerical experiments on ERS-1 data show that the presented method allows to reach better results respect to other techniques already applied to SAR raw data compression.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference. Distributed target SAR image de-blurring using phase gradient autofocus 基于相位梯度自动对焦的分布式目标SAR图像去模糊

Zavattero","doi":"10.1109/NRC.1999.767331","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/NRC.1999.767331","url":null,"abstract":"A new analysis of errors in blur function estimate formed by the real-time phase gradient autofocus (PGA) algorithm is presented for synthetic aperture radar images of distributed targets in correlated noise clutter. It is shown that the PGA algorithm, like the Attia-Steinberg and Vachon-Raney focusing algorithms, can estimate a translation-invariant blur function when no point reflectors are present. The analysis shows that simulation evaluations of PGA performance which do not include sufficient simulated clutter can tend to underestimate the performance of the algorithm in initial iterations. Implications of the error analysis for performance optimization of real-time PGA implementations are presented for the algorithm steps that involve range bin selection, circular shifting, and windowing. It is shown that range bins selected for processing should be widely spaced if possible. If distributed targets are present which cause locally spatially correlated imagery, then it is desirable that the circular shifting segment of the algorithm maintain maximum decorrelation of the intermediate windowed and aligned images used for iterative phase error estimation.","PeriodicalId":411890,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1999 IEEE Radar Conference.
