{"title":"Punctul-și-virgula","authors":"Cristiana Aranghelovici","doi":"10.59277/scl.2022.2.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.59277/scl.2022.2.01","url":null,"abstract":"This article is a proposal to standardize a punctuation mark – the semicolon –, and describe the situations of use and the communication implications of the sign: prosodic, pragma-semantic and stylistic functions. The relationships between the semicolon and other punctuation marks, as well as recommendations for use in writing practice are also considered. Semicolon is less and less known and used nowadays; its use depends on the author’s preferences. Among the stylistic varieties, the semicolon is used most frequently in the scientific and argumentative style. In 1772–1774, the text was translated into Romanian by Toma Dimitriu, a Greek from Kastoria who had established in Moldova in 1758 and who authored numerous translations, mostly from Greek, but also from French. Dimitriu’s still unedited rendition of Le tocsin des rois is one of the oldest translations from French into Romanian. These types of periphrases could be found in documents coming all over the romance chancelleries, therefore this denominative practice must have been widely spread at a certain historical stage. Soon after the occurence of the patronimic (by eliminating the relational noun (filius or proles) from the latin filiation periphrases), these lexical kinds of denomination are to be used especially in legal contexts, indicating thus the relation with the head of the family in certain situations. As for Romanian at the moment of the first intern texts were released, one can notice the use of the lexical filiation in all three chancelleries but not as an exclusively mean of naming. As a certain particularity we are to mention the use of filiation in the official denomination of the Wallachian ruler, probable a trace of a Byzantine influence. Regarding the occurrence of filiation periphrases within the internal documents these are used especially in judicial contexts and in legal texts, but not as a unique way of naming. The sign * appears in a wide variety of domains (literary texts, scientific works, legal and administrative documents, advertising messages), and the roles differ depending on the type of text. Some roles played by the asterisk remain constant regardless of the domain: for example, marking footnotes, delimiting chapters or anonymizing proper names. It presents the achievements of a mass-media language monitoring project, which involves the development of a dedicated application, described in the article, and the recording in its database of numerous quotations with language problems. One is that they develop the field using synonymy, polysemy and sems, both inside the European and the American varieties. A second one is that they possess specific thematic fields, present in some of these languages, as well as specific phrases, alongside with a series of general or particular sets of equivalence, grouped by two or more languages.
