Since curricula that integrates technology appears to provide an array of opportunities that promote engagement and language skills, it is worth examining how and whether L2 motivation, self-regulation and learning can be heightened through digital technologies. This paper describes a 6-week intervention programme conducted on 205 international students enrolled on an English for Academic Purposes course at a British university. {"title":"Ideology, metaphor and persuasion in times of elections: a corpus-based study of British and Spanish economic reports","authors":"M. M. Considering the strong effect it has on the discourse participants and how it can persuade them towards one side, action, or thought (Charteris-Black 2004, Silaski 2012), it is necessary to study it when the timeframe and the discourse where it is used are ideologically loaded. Based on recent studies on metaphor in economics (Alejo 2010, Herrera-Soler and White 2012, Soares da Silva et al. 2017), metaphor in the press (Koller 2004/2008) and metaphor and ideology (Goatly 2007, Silaski 2012), this article presents a corpus-based study of metaphor in reports of economic affairs in the English and Spanish press during the pre-election week of 2015. The corpus (about 160,000 words) consists of reports published by six newspapers that support different political spheres (left, centre and right): The Guardian, The Independent and The Telegraph in English, and Público, El País and ABC in Spanish. From a Critical Metaphor Analysis perspective (Charteris-Black 2004), the study starts from the hypothesis that the political stand of each newspaper might condition the metaphors. Indeed, metaphors pointing at certain side of political spheres appear in all the sub-corpora of the study, but in distinctive ways, as will be shown. A multimodal corpus of instances of the construction was compiled and analyzed, paying attention to the components of the construction such as its phonetic-phonological and gestural features as well as the idealized cognitive models underlying the use of the tautology in discourse. This study also addresses how different semantic-pragmatic uses have an impact on the linguistic form (e.g. prosody, gesture) and emphasizes the fluid interaction between linguistic meaning/form and the social and cultural context in which language is used. It is argued that a full understanding of any construction requires a multimodal, discourse-based analysis. {"title":"Reading the Body in Dickens’s Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend","authors":"Zeynep Harputlu Shah","doi":"10.5209/cjes.61471","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5209/cjes.61471","url":null,"abstract":"This article examines the ways in which the Victorian body and identity were being transformed in the mid-nineteenth century and identifies three distinctive ways the biological and normative boundaries of the body were violated as represented in Dickens’s fiction: the grotesque body, the vulnerable body and the dead body. In this sense, Dickens’s Bleak House (1851-53) and Our Mutual Friend (1864-65) present creative and challenging literary responses to the Victorian body abjected through deprivation, physical vulnerability and death. In the novels, the grotesque body challenges the abject via a tragicomic and hybrid representation of the body and of character. Regarding the vulnerable body, the study elaborates on a body “out-of-control”, threatening the boundaries between the object and the subject, inside and outside, by holding a liminal state through ill-health, excessive labour, starvation and physical degradation. Soja’s radical critique to the prevailing narrative of history in social theory, this paper investigates how two novels on Italian/American ethnic identity are distinctively spatialized. The analysis focuses on the characters’ different experiences and perceptions of space, which attest to the interplay of identity and spatial production, paying attention to agency and spatial stories that are specifically localized. By using theory on the (re)production of space, this paper analyzes how urban representational and material patterns relate to social division, in terms of ethnicity and gender, and how the perpetuation of inequality is spatially enacted. Particularly, it examines the key gendered urban layout that is revealed in how women are often “in transit” (Gómez-Reus and Glifford 2013), “out of place” (McDowell 1997) or in fear (Valentine 1989; Pain 2001) in the “embodied spaces” of the streets (Tonkiss 2005). Through two texts of early Italian/American fiction, this paper addresses the spatial practices, as well as restrictions, of the embodied racialized and gendered subject. In the present study, a group of 19 in-service primary school teachers (further - participants) are asked to write reflective essays on the topic “My Understanding of Speech Fluency in EFL”. The corpus of the participants’ reflective essays has been contrasted with the reflective essays written on the same topic by a control group, which is comprised of 19 EFL pre-service primary school teachers. The results of the framing analysis reveal that the participants frame speech fluency in EFL by the frames Communication, Disfluency, Flow, Grammar, Importance, Multimedia, Role Model, Vagueness, and Vocabulary. Notably, there are qualitative and quantitative differences in the distribution of the frames between the groups of participants and controls. {"title":"From Carmageddon and Invizimals to SimCity and Digimon: Blending Patterns in Videogame Titles","authors":"Paula López-Rúa","doi":"10.5209/cjes.64136","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5209/cjes.64136","url":null,"abstract":"This paper delves into the structure and motivations of blending by reporting on the results of the analysis of a corpus of 80 blends gathered from the field of videogaming. The starting point will be a multidimensional description based on a set of parameters and values drawn on previous works by, among others, Kemmer (2000), Ronneberger-Sibold (2006) and Mattiello (2013). In accordance with the principles of Prototype Theory (Lakoff 1987; Langacker 1987), the combination of values displayed by the items results in an overall degree of typicality and will allow their location in the centre or the periphery of the category. The theoretical framework will be put into practice in the analysis of a corpus of blends naming videogames. Most of them are found to be prototypical items, the most common type being the so-called \"overlapping\" blend (Splatoon: splat + platoon). Lastly, concerning the motivations for the creation of blends in this particular field, these items succeed in economically capturing key features of the game so as to awaken the interest of potential buyers. {"title":"As beautiful inside, as it is outside: On the connection between beauty and morality in the Old English corpus","authors":"Francisco Javier Gorjón Gómez","doi":"10.5209/cjes.63808","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5209/cjes.63808","url":null,"abstract":"This paper aims to look into the link between the experience of beauty at a sensory level and its connection with more cognitive considerations in Anglo-Saxon England. To do so, I have carried out a complete analysis of the usage of the Old English adjective fæger, one of the main descriptors of beauty in the linguistic variety. Using the Dictionary of Old English Corpus, I have created a concordance and a database containing all its attested forms, which I have analysed following diverse sociolinguistic criteria. This analysis has proven that the evaluation of beauty as rendered by Old English fæger had a strong cognitive component, mainly related to the moral and spiritual virtues of the aesthetic object and often visually represented by an abundance of light. According to this analysis, the experience of beauty in Anglo-Saxon England constitutes a rare experience that in most cases, goes beyond the sensory and the purely physical. \u0000 \u0000El propósito de este artículo es investigar la conexión entre la experiencia de la belleza a un nivel sensorial y su conexión con aspectos más cognitivos en la Inglaterra anglosajona. Para ello, he llevado a cabo un análisis completo del uso del adjetivo fægerperteneciente al inglés antiguo, uno de los principales descriptores de belleza en la variedad lingüística. Usando el Dictionary of Old English Corpus, he creado una concordancia y una base de datos con sus distintas atestaciones, las cuales he analizado siguiendo diversos criterios sociolingüísticos. Este análisis ha demostrado que la evaluación de la belleza tal y como es descrita por fæger tenía un fuerte componente cognitivo, principalmente relacionado con las virtudes morales y espirituales del objeto que a menudo son representadas visualmente con una abundancia de luz. The present paper offers a review of the most influential theories seeking synergies and convergence between them under the umbrella of cognitive linguistics, and, more specifically, resorting to Langacker’s (2001) current discourse space (CDS) as the overall framework which can accommodate and encompass those perspectives, along with Fauconnier and Turner’s (2003) Conceptual Integration Theory.
