Taking in consideration that at Guri hydro power plant there are power transformers older than twenty years old, it was decided to select a group of step-up transformers for evaluation of insulation and mechanical conditions based on: dissolved gas analysis (DGA), tests of oil, and electric tests, for the last five years. Due to an incipient fault condition detected by DGA, a program of off-line tests on a group of three-phase and singlephase transformers of Guri power plant was scheduled in cooperation with Hydro Quebec International experts. Frequency response stray losses, frequency response analysis, recovered voltage measurement and dissipation factor versus frequency tests were applied on each selected transformer. As a result of the investigation, it was found that mechanical and insulation conditions were good for most of these transformers","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128594004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most important reliability indices are found namely failure rate ? and repair rate mu through data collection and analysis. The availability and reliability of individual units and for the power plant are evaluated by taking into account different case studies. The energy not generated as generating reliability measure is found. This paper gives a clear view of how hydro plant is modeled by defining states and finding the failure and repair rates for five years for each unit. The mean failure and repair rates are found. Finally the availability and reliability of Dokan hydro power station is evaluated","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129736146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimal investment to be performed is a function of generating ability of new units which are dimensioned according to the energy generation ability, to the impact caused by new interconnections and to the energy supply criterion. Thus, this work aims at obtaining the optimal planning of the existing power plants through the building perspective of new generation units in order to meet the market in a trustful and economic manner. However, the problem involves several entry programs of thermal and hydro plants and several synthetic series corresponding to the hydro scenarios, giving the problem a combinatorial problem. In order to do so, herein we will use a genetic algorithm, which presents a particular genetic structure and incorporate rules used by the system planner, to search for the best expansion strategy independently","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127340555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In environments where several decisions have to be made, the MAS is conformed by agents that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to support real time autonomous operation. This paper presents a proposed application of MAS in electrical substation automation and in distribution automation systems. These automation systems are formed, among other equipment, by the local master station (LMS): the computational system of the substation. The master station executes the control and central processing of the distribution networks or dispatch regional centers. In this kind of environments, multiple collaborative agents achieve their specific goals and cooperate to achieve the system goal. Specific activities carried out by the agents include the acquisition of information, communication transport information, data management and visualization functions. The acquisition is achieved from the substation equipment like remote terminal units (RTUs), meters, protections and relays (IEDs). This paper presents an overview of the principles underlying the intelligent agents' paradigm and the AI techniques that can be utilized to support collaborative agents in a substation environment. This paper also discusses the potential benefits of this approach over the traditional architectures as well as the foreseen challenges involved","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129055506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, grid extensions are not always viable for some communities due to either their small size or location. This paper describes a software tool that is being developed for application in the design of suitable power generation systems for small isolated rural loads based on standalone wind-diesel hybrid systems. Inputs to the program include the expected annual load profile, site-specific data on the renewable resource and diesel generator operating costs. The software applies dynamic programming techniques to arrive at a suitable selection of diesel generators and corresponding annual operating cost for given load and renewable resource profiles","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132515515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Line transposition is implemented to decrease phase unbalances at fundamental frequency. The transposition section must be much lower than 1/4 of wave-length, which means for 60 Hz, much lower than 1250 km. normally a 100-km section is used. For fundamental frequency it is then correct to consider the line as an ideally transposed line. In the present paper it will be analyzed the error of treating transmission line as ideally transposed for all frequency ranges, specifically when dealing with switching transients up to 10 kHz. A theoretical analysis is performed identifying the unbalances between the phases considering the transmission line ideally transposed and considering transmission line with actual transposition sections. The first part presents a bibliographical survey about the advances to date in the area of protection of medium voltage (MV) distribution networks with distributed generation (DG). The second part discusses the transient stability of distributed synchronous generators, and the application of single pole auto-reclosing (SPAR) scheme in MV distribution networks. In the third part of this paper, dynamic simulation studies are performed and presented in order to evaluate transient stability of DG during three-phase and single-phase-to-ground faults. Additionally, results of simulation of the SPAR scheme applications on a MV distribution network with DG are presented. Using an infrared camera, a thermal image can be obtained presenting abnormal heating regions on power equipment. The heating can indicate a failure on this system/equipment or an unusual electrical situation as over voltage or a poor contact. The precision of an infrared cam is based on some parameters that must be evaluated during the inspection. This work presents a study done with thermal images obtained from different materials. Different values measured when the correct emissivities and distance are not used during inspection and/or analysis of the thermal image. The results show that differences larger than 10% can be obtained for the temperature when the emissivity varies in a range from 1 to 0.75, which includes the value of 0.85 used for most companies","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125541954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
