La Electricidad de Caracas, an AES electrical utility in Caracas, Venezuela. Power system operations are subject to growing restrictions and, therefore, have had to become more efficient to enhance the cost structure and comply with regulatory demands on quality of service. Now, technical studies and decision-making processes are not only based on \"traditional\" technical criteria, but also use other methods, such as asset management, work management and strategic planning. In addition, customers are increasingly taken into account in these processes. The article presents examples of methods such as reactive power sources optimization, short circuit levels studies, network investment projects, budget managing, and low frequency load shedding and area separation","PeriodicalId":406067,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE/PES Transmission & Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115608683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ideally, executing this kind of project requires the outage of the lines as a fundamental rule or precaution. However, is not possible to, in most cases, disrupt power; for that reason it forces us to execute the stringing process with the power lines in operation. CVG EDELCA is carrying out the replacement of 1360 km of conventional ground wires with OPGW which has allowed us to get to know different methodologies for OPGW cable installation on live lines. The configuration of distribution network is defined by the tie switches and sectionalized switches. The configuration optimization problem of distribution network is a combination optimization with a large search space involved the operational constraints of the distribution. An ant colony search (ACS) and a hybrid ACS combining membership functions are proposed to achieve both the global optimization and the fastest computing time. The results are compared to the ones obtained from other heuristic methods (heuristic, simulated annealing, genetic). Capacitor bank connection is essential due to reactive compensation reasons. Transients produced upon of capacitor bank energizing, reach in harmonics, may be harmful for the capacitor and become an increasing concern for both electric utilities and customers since its switching usually occurs quite frequently. We know that power factor correction capacitors are sensitive to harmonics and one factor of the failures of power capacitors indicates the prime odd harmonics like 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th harmonics.
