The literal meaning of the poem seems to be, at fi rst glance, quite clear; however, the presence of some runes and an unexpected division into three sections require more attention. The aim of the present article is to investigate these peculiar aspects according to the methodology of Material Philology in particular. The analysis of the context of the Exeter Book and of the graphic cues characterizing the poem enables us to suggest a possible function for the tripartite layout of the text and to clarify the meaning of the runic message at the end. Moreover, the relation between The Husband’s Message and the closest poems in the codex can shed new light on the meaning of the text revealing a possible, further allegorical level of interpretation. This perspective is also supported by textual analysis: various elements appear to be related to biblical symbols and seem to suggest that the sea journey described in The Husband’s Message could be construed allegorically as the process of conversion every Christian should undergo in order to gain eternal salvation. 1. The critics and The Husband’s Message Traditionally categorized as an elegy 1 , The Husband’s Message presents some remarkable complexities on different levels. First of all, the tripartite structure of the poem seems quite unusual, but the reason for this layout in the Exeter Book 2 is not clear. The identity of the narrator is still a mystery owing to a large hole on the manuscript page in which are lost most of the lines in the fi rst section of the poem. Moreover, the interpretation of the secret message shaped by the runes at the end of the text is still a crux. The earliest editors were particularly attentive to the problem of the division of The Husband’s Message into three parts and recognized that the presence of three capital letters throws some doubt upon the unity and the integrity of the text. Whereas Grein’s edition (1857-1858) considered The Husband’s Message as a single text starting from l. 1, Thorpe (1842: 470-475) edited ll. 1-12 as a riddle and ll. 13-54 as a ‘fragment’, thereby underlining the similarity between the fi rst section of the poem and Riddles 30b and 60","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"30 1","pages":"71-95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71268892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Donati","doi":"10.6092/LEF_30_P11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.6092/LEF_30_P11","url":null,"abstract":"The vocative case has been the object of many remarks since the Ancient Stoa until nowadays: as a matter of fact, its specifi city within case systems is a topic of theoretical discussion which often appears in Western metalinguistic thinking. Nevertheless, scientifi c linguistic literature lacks deep analysis in this regard, mainly as far as theoretical aspects are concerned. This paper addresses the issue of outlining a theory of the vocative. The vocative has a special status with respect to the category of case: it is an extrasyntactic element and it does not mark, as other case values do, the semantic-syntactic relation between noun phrases and other elements in the clause, but rather its function is pragmatic, namely placing an addressee in a given speech context. In this paper we put forward the hypothesis that the vocative can be defi ned as a “referentiality shifter”, namely a morphological tool linking the inherently non-deictic referentiality of nouns to the extra-linguistic context. Furthermore, the vocative marks only the second person in opposition to fi rst and third person: in this sense, it can be said to establish an asymmetry within the noun system, since fi rst and third person are not marked for person. In this regard, we argue that the anomaly of the vocative within case systems of Greek and Latin (as well as of other languages owning this category) can be interpreted and solved by means of the Benvenistean concepts of person vs non-person and, moreover, that it supports Benveniste’s remarks about personal pronouns. In fact, the vocative case gives prominence to the fact that a split, different from Benveniste’s correlation de personnalite, can be outlined within nouns: second person vs fi rst and third person. This split illustrates the specifi c feature of language of marking the functionally outstanding members of a given category occurring in a given domain, in this case the second person within the domain of noun referentiality.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"30 1","pages":"11-43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2010-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71269005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At T1 the learners tend to utter their requests in single long speech turns, whereas the native speakers prefer to split the requesting moves into several short turns. Furthermore, in learners’ requests internal modifiers are less in terms of variety and frequency. Over three years, the learners’ requestive style becomes increasingly more target-like in both the distribution of utterances and the use of internal modifiers. The results seem to confirm the developmental pattern hypothesized for interlanguage requests on the basis of previous research, yet suggesting a partial revision of the acquisition sequence at the highest stages.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"28 1","pages":"83-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71268116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major feature of their works is the use of invandrarsvenska, the “immigrant Swedish”, a language widely outspread in the suburbs of Stockholm, Malmo and Goteborg. As scholars have pointed out, this “dialect” can be regarded both as an interim language spoken by immigrants unable to express themselves in fluent Swedish, or as a sociolect used by second generation immigrants, who deliberately speak with broken Swedish. After a brief outlook of the history of immigration in Sweden, the analysis concentrate on two short stories by Alejandro Lleiva Wenger and on the novel Ett oga rott by Jonas Hassen Khemiri, where immigrant Swedish is primarily used as slang. The last part is devoted to Khemiri’s second novel Montecore, and to Marjaneh Bakhtiari’s Kalla det vad fan du vill, where the writers describe the situation of their family in the suburbs of Stockholm and Malmo, giving special attention to the interim language spoken by their parents. This new generation has opened the way to a new urban realism, both linguistic and social, and has given us a critical portrait of contemporary Sweden.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"46 1","pages":"111-139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71268482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Anthimus was a Byzantine physician who wrote his letter in Vulgar Latin, but he also used and adopted many foreign loanwords in his treatise. In particular, words which may be considered of Germanic origin (brado, bridum, fartalia, fenea, gavata, medus, melca, sodinga) have caused translators and commentators many difficulties, because of their nonunivocal interpretation. The aim of this article is to offer a short contribution to the explanation of two of these Germanic loanwords (bridum and sodinga) by means of a comparison made between the Latin text by Anthimus and its translation in Early New High German, which, of course, can not be considered as the definite solution to their problematical interpretation, but nevertheless can show how these words were understood during the 15 th century in German area.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"29 1","pages":"179-196"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71268818","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The recent publication of the Italian edition (La lingua italiana del dialogo, 2007) of Spitzer’s work induces to reflect on the theoretical roots of his research, as well as on the linguistic items he focused on. Many aspects that Spitzer considers as constitutive of spoken Italian have a more accurate systematisation in recent pragmatic studies: the same articulation of his work – based on the relations existing among the three constitutive components of dialogue (speaker, hearer and situation) – reveals the originality of Spitzer’s path. The fact that his interest privileged psychological rather than grammatical features induces to study in depth the specificity and the analogies of the essay with the linguistic trends of early XX century. In the same way, the lateness of Italian translation makes wonder why the Spitzer’s work – apart from Benvenuto Terracini’s comments – has been scarcely welcome by Italian scholars.","PeriodicalId":40434,"journal":{"name":"Linguistica e Filologia","volume":"28 1","pages":"57-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2009-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71268104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
